See, that's funny. I like White Star better (not for brunch though), but I consistently have much worse service there than at Hamilton Inn. They often have basically two people running the whole place and they spend their entire time behind the bar. Don't get me wrong, Hamilton Inn is incredibly disappointing as a restaurant, but as a pub I think it's fine.

Hamilton Inn also has a mouse problem, I have been there late at night and seen mice runing around on the floor in the kitchen and bathroom area. I went into the stall and there were two mice in there with me, running behind the pedestal.
I imagine they are using pest-control services, and I know that many bar kitchens have mice, but I think they should take it more seriously and do the necessary construction work to identify where they are getting in and block up the holes. Robin.

We've not been in almost 2 years... White Star has become our go-to place for similar food. It's heads/tails above Hamilton Inn.

I haven't been in over a year. They only time I go is if I'm with a group and they want to go there for a drink. But I don't think I've eaten there in two years.

If this place is so bad, why keep going there?
If I am very dissatisfied with a place, I have no problem never going back again. We have so many options.

moby,
I live in the area too. I would love for it to be a decent restaurant. But instead I'm frustrated by how disappointing the place is. I once had such bad service I wouldn't go in there for nearly a year. With the White Star just a few blocks away, there's an alternative with better bar food and beer selections.

Oi, this place is brutal. While I fully agree that Hamilton isn't even a JC top brunch spot the reviews here are pretty harsh. The brunch is decent, the dinner is OK as long as you stick to the pub food.
I wouldn't go there for a nice dinner out, but for a drink and a sandwich/burger/tacos it's fine. I've never noticed any problem with the service and I've been there a lot (live in the area and am lazy).

Its painfully and sadly apparent that Hamilton Inn isn't really about their food. It's basically just a bar, where people go to drink and then choke something down. I've never enjoyed a meal there and in my experience the service hasn't been too great.

I've tried the burger a few times over the years and it's an absolute disgrace. It must be an inside joke every time someone orders that off the menu. The fish tacos, however, are pretty decent.

Every five years or so, I'll give that place another shot. Tried it again a few days ago. Awful burger. Tasted like the gas flame you get at burger king. The sweet potato fries were good, but i'm not going to a place for $6 fries.

I don't know if it was your past or recent experience but I went there for dinner this week and the food was great - they had this kind of salad with sweet potatoes to die for, and of course I like their fish tacos. Cocktails are awesome, the cucumber one in particular... Service as described before is top.
I don't know for brunch, and I forgot to check whether they still do their $1/oyster special on Wednesday. So many options in JC nowadays...

We got a side of carrots there one time, and I'm not even kidding, they were dumped from a baby carrot bag and had melted butter poured over them. If those carrots even touched a pan, I would have needed to see it to believe it.

I much prefer Hamilton Inn over Light Horse, which has gone way downhill lately.
Though even before this slide, I've had some bad brunch experiences there: Cold (as in forgot to heat after taking eggs out of fridge/ice bath) eggs benedict, crummy service, broccoli instead of broccoli rabe...

Maybe things have changed dramatically possible I guess. have not heard anything about it in a while since everyone I know who used to eat there no longer does. my last time there for dinner it was bad enough that none of us finished our plates... and not because we were full. tough break, it's a great space and the old Ale House was pretty much perfect, in a low key way.

Yeah, that is very strange. I would MUCH rather go to Light Horse, Skinners or Marco & Pepe.

Yeah ... I can think of 10 places in Jersey City alone I'd go for brunch before having it at Hamilton Inn again. The one time I had brunch there a few years ago was comically bad - no seasoning at all (completely unsalted home fries, for example), the food was cold, the servers were completely uninterested, and so on. Maybe things have changed dramatically (and these types of lists are ridiculous to begin with) but I have my doubts.

The Hamilton Inn in Jersey City is one of the country's top 100 brunch restaurants, according to OpenTable.
The Hamilton Inn was the lone Jersey restaurant to make the list, which reflect the opinions of five million-plus reviewers submitted by verified OpenTable diners covering 20,000 restaurants nationwide. New York state had the most top brunch spots - 15, followed by California (14) and Florida (8). "Thanks to the incredible dining experience at these restaurants, brunch has become the highlight of diners' weekends,'' said Caroline Potter, OpenTable's Chief Dining Officer. "Saturdays and Sundays are always fun days when you're raising a perfect Bloody Mary and tucking into delicious chicken and waffles or Eggs Benedict with friends and family.'' The Hamilton Inn offers brunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays. Story

We went for the first time last night with the Groupon we got a few weeks ago. Service was very nice. Friendly and efficient but not all over us or ignoring us. The music was too loud, but was turned down immediately on our request (big points for that!). Only one table empty after we sat down and the bar filled up by the time we were done. My husband liked the ribs, and I loved the fish tacos. Spicy and delicious. My son was neutral on the turkey burger (but I thought it tasted very good) and he took one of my tacos and love the red velvet cake. Coffee was fine. If I lived around Hamilton Park, I think we would be regulars.

The eggs benedict hits the spot for brunch. And their $3 bloody marys are probably the best $3 bloody marys I've ever had.
The cobb salad is a nice light lunch choice. I like that they put rosemary on their fries. Gives 'em a little something extra going on.

I agree with ValJester, I've tried their burgers twice and probably won't again, they are lacking. The wings are very good, I prefer the asian bbq myself (yes, they are sweet, but with a nice spice). I'd also recommend the L.A. fish tacos and the fusilli (fusilli is good for two meals). I've heard good things about the lobster pizza, though I've never tried it.

I definitely recommend their risotto of the day and their soups - always very good flavors if not a bit expensive. I also enjoy the filet mignon steak sandwich and their fries are great (burgers are average).
I really love their beer selection too - lots to explore!

stopped in for dinner at the bar last month. worst fish & chips I can remember eating. just aweful, barely made it though 1/4 of the plate. Marginal calamari as well.
Can anyone recomend menu "highlights"? have no interest in going back in and guessing. Generaly speaking, I don't see how that giant menu makes sense for that space and that kitchen.
