Didn't work with her, but she came over and reviewed and gave us a quote. She was very personable and friendly and professional. Gave us good ideas. Ended up postponing the project. Nice lady. Will work with her in future if the need arises.

Has anyone had any recent good experiences with a landscaper other than A Small Green Space? Looking for back yard leveling, drainage install, stump removal, plantings, paver patio, new fencing...

Thanks.

Thanks so much for the reco of Alex. Theres a world of (price) difference between regular landscapers and "designers' but it depends what your needs are. Get back to you on the results :)

If you are interested in higher end garden design, you might also want to consider Foras Studio

http://www.foras-studio.com/

They mostly work in Brooklyn and Manhattan but one of the owners lives in Jersey City.

Good luck!

Hufnagel planted very invasive bamboo in an adjacent neighbor's yard. They did a poor job of containing it and it outgrew the barriers, the yard and is running rampant in several other yards. I've been ripping the stuff out of my yard for four years running and have finally hired a contractor to dig a two foot trench all around my yard so we can put up our own defensive barriers. Hufnagel has refused to take responsiblity for bad judgment in using a most unsuitable grass for a small city yard. Of course, they blamed their clients, who sold several years ago to an unsuspecting family who has spent hours digging the stuff out of their yard too.

And to add insult to injury, their prices are a lot higher than most.

I used Family Landscaping to do an overhaul of my backyard (25' x 50') recently. They showed up on time, the price was fair and the work was done quickly and well. Call Alex 973 296 5246

Hi all, I'm looking for someone to do a small landscaping job. My backyard is about 27x13 in size and I'm thinking of laying down sod or seeds. Right now the grass is really patchy and the ground feels bumpy when walked on so I want it smoothed out. Can anyone recommend someone on the cheap? I'm willing to help. Thanks!

Does anyone know if there's a place that supplies sod in JC, or better yet, delivers it? Neither Hudson Farmers MArket on JFK nor the 14th Street Center have it, and both recommended Charlies in North Arlington, but they won't deliver to JC.

Can anyone recommend a good landscape/paving contractor? I would like to have parts of my yard paved with concrete and the work will involve removing some really old and large bushes.

Thanks.

I had the pleasure of meeting with Emma of asmallgreenspace.com and although we both came to the conclusion that my yard space needs a lot more thinking over, she helped me a lot with ideas that can help me get to where I need it to be. Once I have the yard to a point where I can actually think about garden design ideas, I won't hesitate to consult her again.

We just used Emma from A Small Green Space to redo our backyard, including replacing a full space of gravel with lovely pavers. She sub-contracts the work out but manages them. She was great to work with (as well as the sub-contractors) and I highly recommend. I thought the price was very reasonable given they did the complete area in pavers. They were quick and leveled the pavers so water runs away from the house (we have major basement flood issues).

Keep in mind she's more of an urban garden designer, so she will charge for concepts and such. If you truly know what you want, she may not be the best choice (not sure).

Try giving Family Landscaping a call. They also have a construction group as well so it may be the perfect combination for your needs.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a contractor/landscaper in building a ground level deck or patio? We have a small backyard with cracked cement and were thinking about building a wooden deck over it so we can actually use our outdoor space! I am not sure if I would need a landscaper or a contractor and really have no idea where to begin!

Thanks!

Try Family Landscaping (973-296-5246) based out of Newark and ask for Alex. I just had about 450 sq/ft of lawn installed. They churned my soil, fertilized and installed new sod for $500. They come with a team of 3-4 guys and are in-and-out in a few hours. The employees are nice guys and they clean up after themselves since they had to drag the sod through my garden floor to reach my backyard. My yard now looks like a million bucks.

btw, thanks to the moderator who merged my new thread into this, there's great info here, I feel like an idiot for not searching first.

Looking at some of these designs (and prices) they're awesome but way more 'design'-ish than I'm looking. I'm more looking for labor with some experience.

The problem is it won't be cheap. I'm sure there's a minimum amount they'll do a job for, regardless of size. Especially if the only access is through the house. I recently found that floor refinishers won't touch a job for less than $500, even if it's only 100 sq ft.

Keep us apprised, I'd love to get my own tiny lawn sodded.

I have a small yard with my apartment which is in pretty rough shape. I'm interested in finding a landscaper who can just do a quick simple job on a 20x40 plot. Probably just tear out the busted walkway and re-sod, but ideally I a pro who could make sure I'm not doing anything dumb with drainage so I don't flood my basement apartment.

So anyone know landscapers who do simple small/urban plots on the cheap?
