Having a difficult time estimating how high the water will get in downtown. We live near city hall - corner of Marin Blvd and Mercer. During Irene, we had 3 feet in the basement. What should we expect now?
Is this something where those on the "parlor" level of a brownstone should be concerned? We are on the first floor - but that's a good 5 feet above street level. Thoughts?

Interesting news from http://jerseycitynj.gov regarding evacuations:
"Update 10/29 1:11pm: There will no longer be shelter pick-ups at the Newport Mall McDonalds since the area is under water. All further pickups should go to City Hall, 280 Grove Street or the Pavonia PATH station."

Oh look what is making the rounds on the internet. Gangs are planning looting sprees via twitter:
Scores of Twitter users have flooded the social networking site announcing their plans to go on looting sprees once Hurricane Sandy makes landfall, as the New York National Guard announced it would put troops on duty in Long Island to prevent such activity. http://www.infowars.com/gangs-plan-hu ... ooting-spree-via-twitter/ granted.. its Infowars.. hopefully its just a stupid rumor...

At monmouth and 4th right now - things look ok. there are tons of leaves in the street tho so if water starts to build, could change really quick.
grove street looks good for the most part, even in the usually heavy flood areas by taqueria. slight flooding by liberty harbor and the boat basin by st. peters. hopefully it recedes before the high tide later tonight.

Went down to Exchange Place at 10 AM - not bad, a few hours past high tide. The Hudson was right at the level of the walkway by the pier/PATH station - I expected it to be worse. Not much open DT - only the Gotham Deli; Starbucks is closed at EP and Grove, didn't see anything else open. At 12:30 PM, wind and rain seems to be picking up now. Hope for the best. Haven't seen any flooding in the DT area from Warren down to the river. So far our basement is OK.

Low tide is in about 2 hours. Curious if there will still be flooding issues during low tide. If there is, that will bode ill for the waterfront areas tonight.

Holy crap, I toured that ship this summer in Greenport! What a shame. The ship, while not historic, had quite a cinematic resume, built for a Hollywood Bounty movie, and appearing an many more. On the local front, it's interesting the NOAA & NYHOPS forecasts have converged on a 8.5' over sea level surge. Yesterday they disagreed by 2 ft.

How does closing the tunnels help protect against flooding, do they have barriers at the entrances that can be raised to keep out water?
