Sprinkling diatomaceous earth in cracks and outside the house works amazing and is safe.
I've also had great results making a "trap" of borax and sugar water (see link below). Just make sure it's NOT accessible by pets or children. I usually set up a trap overnight where I'm seeing the ants and tape a shoe box over it so my cats don't get into it. Then I take it away before my child gets up in the morning. Great results but it does take a few days of setting the trap to reduce the ant population. http://thehappyhousewife.com/home-man ... s-with-three-ingredients/

I have the same issue every year in that time of the year. It appears after rain. I usually spray their path and put liquid borax on the way - Terro ant killer gel. That way the first thing they will do when they resume is to pick up that stuff. Mess up their metabolism.

Is there something more organic? These chemicals are very harsh.

+1 This has worked very well for me too. It comes in gel, either as containers for the locations where they gather in your house, or as dispensers to apply on the routes they use. Problem solved in 2 days.

So what works well is to mix Boric Acid with sugar and water. You can get Boric Acid at Home Depot sold as roach and ant killer, but be sure to read the label to see that it is 99% Boric Acid.
Mix a teaspoon or so with about that much sugar and water, make into a syrup, and put it near the ants path. In a few hours you should see them gorging on it, and in a day or so, no ants. Boric acid is relatively non-toxic to humans and pets so is safe to use in kitchens. Just keep the qty small in case your cat or dog get into it and try to place out of reach of your pets and kids!

I let a couple of spiders take residence around the door. They seem happy, I'm happy. Maybe the ants, no so. But it seems the way nature intended.

My Apartment is right next to a little garden. I deal with all kinds of intrusions. Like most people, my first response to insects or creatures considered "pests" is to kill them.....I don't know how exactly but....little by little....i just figure....do i have to kill them every time. Some times it's a pain.....but after a while....i am happy showing them the way out with out killing them.

We mortals....so good at killing...and it must be quick an cheap of course. Too much of a hassle to try to be humane and co-exist.

Thx, tried almost all suggestions. The best one was Terro. They were all over that so fast - scary at first to see so many go so crazy. Waited a day for them to gobble it up and leave. Blocked the ant highway with a spray Terro afterwards. Put clove packets in the bed and drawers. They are gone.

Get this. They will swarm all over it, carry it back to the nest, and be dead really soon. I've used it in 3 different houses when I've had ant problems, in bathrooms, bedrooms, kitchens. Always works amazingly
You can get it at Home Depot (though this link is for an entire case) http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/s ... lebase-_-D28X-_-100670253

Put cinnamon across their points of entry and it keeps them out. I put down cinnamon 8 years ago and have never had any ant problems since.

This subject again? Oils, powders, spices, blah, blah, blah. The first response was correct this stuff works best. End of story.

My two cents. Actually four cents: 1) they are seasonal. Grit your teeth and wait them out and they will be gone soon enough. 2) My Mom, who lives in Buffalo and is too into new age/ alternative stuff claims that sprinkling cloves throughout her shelves and in out of the way parts of the house keeps ants away.

i get those tiny ants a lot, and what works pretty well at
discouraging them is getting sprayed with a strong solution of ammonia and water. just get a spray bottle, load it up and have a shot at them.

Orange Guard. We buy it at Whole Foods but I occasionally see it at hardware stores. I spray wherever I see them, usually just twice, and then they never return. I will occasionally spray again just as a preventative measure but usually don't have to. And I had tried everything from raid to baby powder to cinnamon to hot pepper to essential oils and nothing worked.
Bonus-- it's safe around pets and kids.

I had a few "scout" ants come into my place. I just gently picked them up with a piece of paper and moved them out. It's better to not kill them and it is really not that hard to do.
There are many ways to deal with them instead of going crazy setting up traps and conducting chemical warfare....which is not good for people as well. Try putting baby powder around where you think they might be coming in from....it's suppose to deter them for some reason. Another good idea is to walk around your property and seal up little cracks or holes. I am sure it is a hassle....but worth it...since it will keep other uninvited guests. Say No To Ant Killing. :)

Ive had good luck dropping plenty of pesticide outside our building where the dirt meeting the building structure. Also found that the ant traps will do a good job as well.

What traps are you using? I've used the Terro brand traps several times. They've worked far better than any other I tried.

We are having a chronic problem of ants - not a ton of them, not an "ant highway" but obviously those seekers are coming through our house seeing if there's anything worth carrying off. We've got dozens and dozens of ant traps, we've sprayed the insect block at all entrances. They come up from the basement floors.
I wonder if it's just patience. We see them for a few days - they all completely disappear, then it starts again. The sucky part is - this time they've decided to see if there's anything interesting in our bed or closets in the bedroom. That's gross. I wonder if anyone in this neighborhood knows a better way.
