Newport Half Marathon Newbie
#1

My husband is running the Newport Half Marathon this coming Sunday, but we don't see this info in the reg information - is there a way for me to be able to track him as he runs? So we can anticipate seeing him somewhere along the course?

Also if any previous Newport runners have any suggestions or recommendations for him, I'll take those too. Is there food after the race for them? Should I bring something?

Thanks!

what to bring to jury duty?

It's my first time going to jury duty here in Hudson County, so figured I'd ask what to bring to make my day bearable?

I was thinking:
- laptop and power cord
- phone and power cord
- headphones?
- snacks/food/water bottle

Any other tips I should know about? Thanks!

JC parking permit renewals- not being mailed?

I realized that I haven't received my renewal form for my parking permit as I have for years, so I called the Parking Permit office to check...and they said that they aren't mailing them anymore and we need to come to the office, because their printer is broken??

Anyone else dealt with this too? I'm just frustrated that I have to take time off work now to go get this taken care of...due to a printer.

We're going to be looking for a daycare in the downtown area for a 3-month old soon. Does anyone here use one that they really like and would recommend?

Note: we are not looking to have a nanny at this point for various reasons, so please only respond with daycare options.

I keep seeing the Groupon for Serenity Spa- has anyone actually gone for a massage there and how was it?

Thanks to both of you for these suggestions! I'm always on the lookout for yummy vegan desserts for them.

And the gluten-free is helpful too, since I have a family member with a gluten allergy so we like to know what local places are offering.

vegan donuts in JC?

Any chance there's a place in JC to find vegan donuts (or some vegan baked goods)? I'm visiting a sick friend tomorrow whose husband has requested these if possible, and I won't have time to hop into NYC first.

So either in JC or somewhere easily off the turnpike (i'm heading down to Robbinsville).

Hm- i might not have been able to see that you were local to Jersey City. Send me a PM with your facebook name and I'll take care of it.

I've just been trying to keep out spam bots and threadjackers.

Thanks!

We're up to almost 1400 members on the Swap/Sell Jersey City FB page, if anyone else is interested in joining up- see my original post below for information.

Local goods only, no services for sale. People in the group have been doing a great job swapping and selling in a respectful manner, it's been great.

I always go to Ultimate Nail Care at 299 Grove Street- it's small, no-frills, affordable, been around a long time, and their pedicures last me a long time. Helen and the ladies who work there are great!

Need Reputable Jeweler for Repairs

Unfortunately my engagement ring needs repair- a section of it literally broke off and disappeared a few months ago. Need a great, reputable jeweler to give me an estimate for my insurance and repair it.

Any suggestions of a jeweler I can trust to do this and do it right? We are not going to the place where we bought it- this is the second broken ring from them, ughhhh.

Thanks everyone- this is a huge help! We've been putting off making appts forever because...well, laziness. And close by is easier now that one of us works in the city.

We'll try it out!

Anyone have a GP they really like, either in JC or in Hoboken? We would like to find a local GP to make appointments easier.

We have Horizon.

We are a big fan of Amiya in our house. It's by Exchange Place, a little pricey but yum.

They switched several months ago to only taking orders and not selling cupcakes here and there. So must order in advance!

Prismatic- there are free classifieds at the bottom of JCList if that's what you're looking to do. I've bought things off of here before, it's pretty helpful. I definitely encourage you to post items there that you want to sell locally, it's great.

As for Facebook, it's just so easy- I had to try it out! We have almost 200 people so far and a few things selling. If only I thought to take commission, LOL. I love our big little community.

Well...we have almost 100 so far (though 1600 would be awesome!). I think you were looking at the example group page I used from Maplewood.

A few items already posted up for sale/free though! I love our community spirit here in JC!

I love the Freecycle page too, but everything must be 100% free on that page. The FB group allows people to give away for free, trade or sell items. I know sometimes I have smaller items around the house that I want to sell- or once we bought a couch from someone in the neighborhood- and just rolled it up the block.

I like selling and buying locally when possible, and once I saw how this worked in other communities, thought it could be fun and easily connect people.

Swap/Sell Jersey City Facebook Page
#25

Quite a regular

Hi my fellow Jersey City-ites! I just created a Facebook group page for Jersey City residents to post photos of items they want to sell locally, give away for free, or let people know what they're in search of.

I belong to a group page that was created in my hometown and was impressed by how great it works.
(see it here as an example: SoMa Swap/Sell

It's simple:
- pics with your item description/price show up in group members' FB feeds
- if you want to buy/get it, you can comment or PM the poster
- pick it up or buy it locally
- or mention an item you're looking for that someone might sell
- particularly great for baby/kid items to be reused/resold

Quicker to access than Craigslist, easy to post photos from your phone/tablet and sell your stuff! You can choose to have it pop up in your FB newsfeed or only see it when you go to the Swap/Sell FB page. I thought I would try it out for JC and see how it goes.

Join, spread the word and let's start selling/freecycling!

Here's the Swap/Sell Jersey City FB page: Swap/Sell Jersey City

It's a little gross, but we had some sneaky little guys running around, and the only thing that worked is those cheap wooden snap traps. The plastic traps and glue did nothing for us, then the wooden ones started snapping away when we put a little cheese on them. Got them at the hardware store on Newark Ave near Barrow.

Any recommendations for a good, affordable folding bike for casual riding? Our regular bikes were damaged in the hurricane, time to give up and get new ones, preferably folding.

Doctor Recommendation in JC- takes Aetna
#28

My health care plan just switched AGAIN (arg, okay moving on). We need a new primary care doctor and would love to find one in the Jersey City/Hoboken area, so we don't have to go far when sick. We have Aetna- anyone use Riverview Healthcare Associates up on McWilliams Place?

Our Aetna doesn't cover a whole lot unfortunately, so options seem slim. Or does anyone with Aetna have a suggested doctor in JC/Hoboken?

I will give anything to get that footbridge restored at some point. It's the quickest way to LSP for runner and bicyclists. But help for other parts of the community certainly come first!

I've actually been a member for almost 9 years at this point (hey, you can't beat the price!) and I just went and asked some of the staff. The response I got was that they have a lease that goes on another year and a half or so.

If you want to join, I suggest point blank asking them that question to confirm and then decide. I'm hoping they'll stay a bit longer.
