This is ridiculous. I spoke to the owners of one of the food trucks down at Exchange Place last week and they told me that doing business is 100x easier in NYC than in JC. Our local politicians are holding this city back big time.

We can hope. However, the DOB does not look kindly upon businesses that flirt the permit requirements--it's a considerable source of revenue for the city. Piss off the wrong people and they will delay you for years.....there is no limitations period.

I wish them luck but I would not hold my breath.

they posted this on facebook on 3/15... no indication they're done:

"Thank you all for your continued patience. We are doing our best to be able to open as soon as we are able. I will definitely post once I have a date. We are really looking forward to seeing you all!"

no way. I imagine a year and a half of being out of business has been really tough on them, but this place as a staple. #OOPS# the buildings department and #OOPS# this corrupt city. Ruining great small businesses while letting developers do whatever the hell they want.

I don't understand why they never set up a cart or something though? They look so close to opening, if they really are being held up by the city still, then yes, write to Steve Fulop and ask him what's going on.

If it is true that the city is giving them a hard time, it might be a good idea for the owners (or someone who has the authority to speak on their behalf) to post the story here and ask for the community's help/support. Tons of angry phone calls to the right people or children protesting outside of city hall might help clear the way for Torico's to be open in time for summer.

Why not a winter coffee shop selling hot chocolate and pastries ? Maybe having early hours for the commuters. This way it keeps the business in the coffee patron's minds for ice cream in the warm weather months.

The gelato at Statis on Washington is pretty darn good.
Plus they have a high tolerance for sample tastings.

Rumor on the street is that Taqueria has some ice cream. It's not on the menu tho, so you have to know to ask.

Tasti Delite on Marin at Columbus. Which I used to think was just crappy softserve but they've actually got some really good flavors and toppings. And if they don't have something made up at the moment, they'll make any flavor you want for an extra buck.

Still, can't wait for Torico's. Not being open this summer must be killing them.

Tommy Two-Scoop on York Street, although that's gelato, not Ice Cream.

So besides the insanity that is the non-opening during summer of this ice cream shop, where else can you get ice cream downtown?

The interior looked like furniture and things were being set about inside (rather than stacked efficiently in the corners of the room). Hopefully this is an indication they'll be back before the end of summer.

I don't think it's anything with the building department. They are doing a full renovation of the entire building.

I don't think there is any chance they are going to be back open while it's still warm outside. In fact, they might not open until 2012, if I had to guess.

I miss Torico's dearly!

This is Jersey City. Where a permit to put a toaster on your kitchen counter could take up to 3 years.

Sounds like a plan. Let us know when they open.

Oh, and save me some cinnamon ice cream too.

I hope none at all!! That place already charged a bit too much for ice cream, as far as I'm concerned. It's a long walk from Ham Park neighborhood to Tommy's, but I like walking there on a nice day, getting a reasonably priced ice cream and sitting in their garden out back. Will Torico's serve food beyond ice cream when they re-open, I wonder? That would make a difference.
