A silver VW station wagon has been parked about 15 feet from the stop sign since last summer. I walk by there at least twice a day and I can tell you, that thing hasn't budged since at least July or August. Kind of defeats the purpose of owning a car if you're so afraid of losing a parking spot that you don't drive it anywhere. Ever.

Yeah - I see that car. The funniest part of it was the car was getting parking tickets for being too close to the stop sign and rather than just moving the car, the owner wrote a lengthy note and taped it to the car explaining why he shouldn't be getting tickets. Amazing!

Agreed. When street sweeping was suspended last winter for all of January and February, there were people who didn't move their car for weeks or even months. Once all the snow was gone and street sweeping started back up, I saw a few neighbors with cars that wouldn't even start after sitting that long.

You can bet without the hassle of moving for the parking rules, more people would keep a car in the street even if they rarely needed it.

Absolutely.

For years, First Street wasn't swept between Grove and Erie, because police from headquarters parked there, and god forbid we make the cops follow the same no-parking rules as everyone else.

The block was filthy, with piles of litter creeping up and over the curbs. A few of us swept in front of our buildings, but it did little good.

Now headquarters is moving and cars are getting ticketed. The sweeper can actually sweep, and the difference is astounding.

Believe me, you do NOT want the sweepers to go away.

PAD finally got street cleaning started again on Warren Street after five-year-hiatus (halted during the demolition of 111 First) - The curbside and streets have never looked better! It might only be two blocks, but it definitely makes a difference.

Be careful what you wish for... if the sweepers don't sweep it YOU have to (hardly anyone does). If not, the trash accumulates, as well as the dirt.

Nothing funny about this issue. On York Street we definitely do not require constant sweeping. Perhaps the IA should survey the city & redeploy to places that need it.

I can't tell if you are being sarcastic, but this has to be one of the funniest things I've ever read on JCList.

It wouldn't work up in the Heights. On Central off Charles the Parking Authority has the north side of the lot the right side is metered for the public but the PA usually parks there...for free ! Why can't you park there over night is there a sign stating so ?

So was it the parked car that T-boned someone? Best to take off the Dre Headphones and look both ways.

Yeah, I haven't seen any cars crash into corner houses lately, and I don't think anyone has been t-boned on Erie in like 4 months.

I know the city will not want to cut back on street sweeping because it provides revenue, but it's time they called a halt to twice weekly - on both sides of the street - totally uneccessary sweeping. Having to find parking is a harassment. Our streets are not dirty! Even once a month would be adequate for tidying up the neighborhood.

Can we get some movement going?

I'll vote for the candidate that believes that smaller (costing) government and lower taxes are paramount to well paid public employees that put their demands over the needs and concerns of the residents. Too much of our dollars go to salaries and benefits, leaving a decrepit infrastructure, no museum, and ever increasing taxes.

Will you vote for one?

Or will you vote for the city government that likes unions of city employees??

Most of the sweepers I have seen in JC do seemingly leave a trail of garbage behind them. It is frustrating to watch. If it truly was only about ticketing, couldn't the city save money by eliminating the street cleaners altogether?

If you want to see what an unswept street looks like, try to remember the south side of Columbus where the taxi's pick up people. That block never seem to get swept (i'm assuming because of the cabs) and it was constantly filthy.

The sweepers might not do the greatest job in the world, but the gutters would be a wreck if they didn't do what little they accomplish.

I don't think street cleaning needs to go altogether, but having it once per week is plenty. The streets don't get dirty enough every 2-3 days to justify cleaning twice a week.

Like everyone's said though, it's not about street cleanliness, it's about ticket revenue.

The street cleaners tend to move way too fast to really do a thorough job. Also there would be better results if people were hired to pick up trash manually as is done in many, cleaner European cities.

But as was previously mentioned, street cleaning here is not about cleaning streets, but generating revenue. If the city were worried about cleanliness, there would be more litter cans and there would be litter crews to clean up at least the commercial streets.

But when the citizens keep whining over how high their taxes are, the only option for government is to cut services to balance budgets and find alternative revenue streams.

Or, they could perform the services more efficiently.

I encourage everyone to join the litter patrols - I think most neighborhood associations have them. It's a good way to get outside and make the neighborhoods look a little better. If we wait for the city to take care of the problem we might as well just move...

Yeah -- those terrible whining property taxpaying owners!

You better hope you are residing in a rent stable/control apartment.

How much more are you willing to spend in property taxes to achieve your city services ? Remember our taxes went up 15% in the last 2 years. I'm curious to see the $$ responses. I am willing to fork over $52 a year which amounts to a buck a week.
