Abbey's has always been known as a hooka bar as long as I've known. So don't go there if you don't like smoking.
Are you on a mission to check every hooka bar to see if their permit is valid? Are you that hard up to go to Abbey's but their smoking is turning you off?
I don't see what the fuss is about?

The city definitely has a good idea of what's going on at Abbey's - Healy occasionally shows up for the karaoke night

I think the city has a pretty good idea of what's going on inside Abbey's. Unless, of course, you think they go about finding information the same way you do - sitting around wondering about things and making shit up.

OK. I thought it went without saying but maybe not:

Establishments that are officially smoking establishments have a permit from the city that allows smoking at them. If you're interested enough, you can ask the establishment to produce the permit and then you know. It's not grandfathered, it's just a normal part of doing business for some businesses, like Sky Tobacco on Grove Street and any of the many hookah bars around JC.

Now, some may NOT have gotten their permits correctly. But again, it's easy to find that out.

(Waiting to see how long this thread can continue. Maybe we can repeat this self-evident string of sentences a few times more for those growing numbers who, it seems, can't follow a train of thought anymore. And I'm not just talking about this thread or this list

Local businesses can operate however they wish, but if they are operating illegally then something must be done.

If an establishment is barred from smoking indoors then why must they be given a pass when countless others aren't allowed?

omg, smoking is not allowed in public establishments EXCEPT FOR SMOKING ESTABLISHMENTS! Do you know how many hookah bars there are in Jersey City?!

I am not sure why you would go to a place that advertises smoking as a menu item of the business and then complain that there is smoke, but if you MUST, ask them for their permit and be done with it.

(Aside: It is very odd to see someone online just musing about something you can solve for real in a minute. Life can't be that boring.)

It's probably that Middle Eastern joint on Kennedy in the beggining of the Heights. What about the other patrons that don't want to deal with the smelly stinky smoke. If someone brushes against you with their butt (cigarette) and burns a hole in your garment then what ?

Abby's is a hookah bar. What's the problem? I gave up smoking over a year ago. I still visit Abbys. Don't give local businesses a hard time, without real cause. Think first, is the hood really better off without them?

Are you that desperate to go to Abby's? You might want to reevaluate your own life if you are seriously looking to just F with people like that.

So you're saying that it's all right to smoke in a smoke free environment ? I applaud Sepecat for the tenacity to right a wrong. Al least I won't smell of tobacco.

So what do you plan to load your hookah with, weed? Its not a smoke free environment; its a hookah bar.

If they are operating illegally why would anyone not want to report them?

I believe you can in Azucar in Newport.

Pretty sure it's only in the cigar room upstairs or on the patio.

Also should be noted that even though Abbey's is grandfathered in, they don't allow indoor cigarette smoking in summer.

They were grandfathered in specifically because of the hookah business.

Doesn't matter what the percentage of the profit is.

Point is, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT.

There are plenty of other bars in town where you can enjoy a smokeless bar, but only one where we smokers can enjoy a cigarette inside.

Ok why are people allowed to smoke in Abby's? I thought they outlawed smoking inside, except for establishments where most of the money is made off tobacco. I know they sell hookah there, but seriously I cannot imagine a large percentage of their profit is off of it.
