They have been putting periodic updates on their facebook page when people ask. They were optimistic to have the space almost finished this month and then go through inspections...so I'd hazard 2013 or 2014.

Anyone have an update on the progress? I see them working in there, and closing up the alcove to prevent people from taking up residence is definitely a move in the right direction. I want to have my birthday there in March, but it's not looking too likely...

ive been walking past that new liquor store on my way to work for the past six months they've been working on it. certainly didn't pop up over night. they also own another liquor store by journal square so that probably made their building process easier.

It truly is amazing. That place was literally open in a week. It's simply inexplicable how someone that wants to do something with good intentions just cannot move forward with this city. Yet some businesses pop up overnight. It's a slap in the face, and this city has no shame.

I know a liquor store is not necessarily what we need right now but they have a very respectable collection of craft beer. So I'm sort of glad it opened having seen their beer selection. If anyone is into craft beer and within walking distance you should check it out.Quote:

I walked by a few minutes ago. Appears as though they at least got their construction permit and work has started.

They had hoped to open in November of this year when I spoke to Paul after they received approval from the planning board. I suggested to him that it would take quite a bit longer. I hate being right here.

Their Facebook page says that they've been waiting for permits for 10 weeks. What's that sound? The sound of tax revenue being pissed away?

These places are constantly empty.

Newark Ave and it's businesses are not being used by the local residents. It's a breeding ground for the homeless, the drunk, and the beggers. Why? Because nobody gives a sh*t.

How is Newark Ave going to be fixed up?

It will help if we can get the current administration at City Hall voted out (fingers crossed that Steve Fulop will win the next mayoral election). But the only way this will happen is if people, especially in downtown, register to vote and then actually VOTE.
Even though it does absolutely nothing to help them, City Hall knows it can rely on the fact that there will always be small business entrepreneurs who are willing to try a venture in downtown JC (despite the expense and frustration of doing so). It seems like City Hall could care less if these new ventures succeed; logic would dictate that City Hall would fall all over itself to ensure that such businesses thrive on their watch. But the level of corruption in our fine state protects City Halls' jobs (and therefore supports JC's lack of progress). The only way for change to really occur is to vote them out.

I thought I read somewhere that JC has an ordinance prohibiting two men from dancing together or holding hands or some sort of nonsense

That should take a few years. Then when they are done with that, they can debate some other obscure laws on Jersey City's books. Like you can't serve fried eggs on Wednesdays before noon or something.

I sent them an email and they got back to me last night. Nothing to worry about, read on...

Yes, we are still opening in Jersey City. What happened was that we received a lot of press way too early. The paperwork process of drawing up plans, getting all the contractors in place and preparing for construction can take quite a bit of time. We're still shooting for a winter opening, hopefully. If you'd like you can track us here:

Thanks,

Paul

It never ceases to amaze me how this city can screw up every opportunity to improve. I knew it was too good to be true that a cool new bar would open in a space that is currently used as a tent space for homeless drunks.

And yet a liquor store popped out of NOWHERE on Columbus and Barrow.

It really is amazing. Anyone that wants to do something to better the area is made to jump through endless hoops. And yet somehow, little fly by night stores just pop up literally overnight. The "in your face" aspect of all this only angers people even more.

Hasn't the stop work order been on the door for a few months now?

Also forgive me if I'm missing something, but why would the proprietors put pinball machines in the building before the place is even renovated? Isn't that just asking for them to be damaged?

My guess (hope) is that it's easy to read too much into random activity without any other info. The fact that Barcade has put up a facebook page, twitter account, and website for the Jersey City branch since the stop work order first appeared on the building is a sign that some kind of progress, however minute, is being made.
