Just a heads up to all you Torico lovers out there - this weekend's the last days of the season before Torico's closes for renovations and winter. Was in there Sunday and they're already out of a lot of flavors.

Does anyone have any idea when they're opening this year? Now that the weather's getting a little better I'm beginning to crave some of their rocky road...

Maybe it's time to reconsider the practice that used to be followed by old time vendors of homemade ice cream -- charging by weight! In the days when ice cream was packed fresh by hand in local stores, the counter staff would weigh each container and charge by the weight. So whether your packer had a tendency to "scoop air" (roll scoops that weren't solid) or really packed it densely in those old waxed cardboard containers -- you paid for the ice cream you actually got! BTW, am I the only one here old enough to remember having ice cream weighed??? LOL!!!

I agree that the JC shop rite sucks. This is why I shop at the one in Hoboken or Millburn after work.

Totally worth the money. Nothing beats their Chocolate Peanut Butter with hot fudge. I wouldn't go to Shop Rite if they were giving away free ice cream. Shop Rite is the worst shopping experience in Jersey City.

Thank you for the Haagen Dazs shoutout at Shop Rite. As for you "heavy cream haters" and "buy Breyers," where's the love?
I have frequented Torico's for years. I love the ice cream, and I love the staff. But I want my "two dollars" worth.

Haagen Dazs is on sale at shop rite this week for $1.99! And those mini containers that you can bring to the park with you are 5/$5. I don't make enough money to care whose business I support. Besides, haagen dazs cares about the bees.

It's great ice cream, a great business, and we could all probably make do with smaller portions of what we eat, especially desserts.
If you really have the ice cream jones, treat yourself to a double scoop.

I served ice cream for many years during high school and college for mom and pop stores. I was always close to the owners and what I gathered was:
Dairy is VERY expensive. All the hard ice creams were homemade, but each one cost a lot to make. If it's homemade, you have to buy a machine. If it's purchased from a distributor, it's marked up. Containers are about .40-.50 cents a piece, wholesale! Cones are a little cheaper, but that still goes into the price a lot. Soft serve machines are several thousand dollars, and break often.. needing repairs Lots of product (cones) breaks during shipping People who freak about the price usually asked for a decorated cone and extra toppings or other specialties without realizing the price involved. Obviously there is a lot of other overhead. Mortgage on the building, payroll, utilities, cleaning supplies.. etc Like any business, you have to mark things up from your expenses to many any profit. The companies I worked for made next to none and usually closed because no one wanted to buy a small cup of ice cream for $1.95. I still go to Torricos and spend over $3 on a soft serve even though I could get a quart for the same price. I've seen the invoices and expenses first hand so I do understand why the prices are what they are. Besides the ones down the shore who charge $4 for a small, I think a lot of these stores are actually just getting by.

Toricos, what's up? I love you, the home-made ice cream, and the staff. But you're going light on the scoops. I just paid five bucks for a thimble of chocolate ice cream. What gives? I may have to start frequenting the shady joints in Journal Square. Is this just an unfortunate coincidence or is this new policy? Has anyone else noticed a difference?

Do they have any ice cream without any sugar or at least that does not use processed sugar? I gave up sugar about three months now...but I do have a hankering for ice cream...especially since I have never tried Torico's but have heard a ton about this place.

So YOU'RE the reason they're always out of lychee whenever I go....
Honestly though, Torico's is the only place I've been to(besides the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory) that has good lychee ice cream. And considering Torico's is walking distance from my place, I'll go there. If the're out of lychee again when I get there, UrbanRenewal, I'm coming after you!!!!!

I dig the jackfruit ice cream now and again, and I get the green tea, ginger and cinnamon even more often.
But it's always the LYCHEE ICE CREAM that I gravitate back to -- it's mighty sweet and mighty fine! Yum!

I know this sounds ridiculous, but seriously, try the vanilla. It is the best vanilla ice cream I've ever had in my life. You can see that they use real vanilla from all the little black specs throughout.
