I don't care who takes over as long as they gut and clean the place before taking over. It would be nice to have a place to get detergent and boxed and canned goods within walking distance. Tired of food shopping at Duane Reade, Downtown Pharmacy, and Liberty Gourmet.

Anyone know what kind of market is planned for 77 Hudson?

yes, all of that. And why anyone would think TJ's would consider here AT ALL.

If anywhere in Hudson is getting it first, it's Hoboken, where there is a PROVEN core demographic for their stores. They still don't have their typical market (semi-wealthy suburbia) covered at all (Monmouth County is only getting their first late this fall). And I'm telling you TJ's feels it has the VERY limited amount of potential customers they have in JC covered with 14th St and Edgewater. You don't think Downtown JC has a limited amount of potential TJ's customers? Run a demo study. It's not going to happen .

I suppose I'm really not understanding the emphasis on parking. Is it just a Trader Joe's preference to have parking? To me, as a resident of the area....I do not see a car-centric culture at all around here. The C-Town location is surrounded by residential streets. I'm sure MOST of those people, as well as many people from other neighborhoods, would walk in and do almost all of their food shopping there.

I would absolutely walk to that location from Van Vorst Park for a Trader Joe's.

I don't know why everyone is harping on the parking aspect. As I remember, there really isn't much parking options at the Trader Joe's on Atlantic Ave in Brooklyn. However I do agree with the foot traffic somewhat. Truly the perfect spot for a Trader Joe's would be in the old Hardware store on Jersey Ave (next to Made with Love). The sq footage of the building would be suitable and the location would be ideal for people to come from both Hamilton Park and Van Vorst neighborhoods, not to mention some of the other areas. The foot traffic in the area is pretty good and it's only a few blocks from the path. It can be a catalyst to the area and hopefully new shops everyone has been yearning will follow.

It's essentially C-Town with a different logo. That location is terrible. There is no foot traffic and no place to park. As was stated above, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, etc won't open without parking. Now instead of C-Town, we'll have a cactus with a goofy face.

I'm really not sure why a better market has not claimed the space.

The Western Beefs that I've seen, are typically in lower income areas.

Ugh and that goofy logo they have...it looks trashy.

This is not an upgrade. Really not sure how Trader Joe's didn't actively seek out that spot. It seems to fit the demographics.

I walked through C-Town yesterday (first time this year.)

In their defense it's a bit cleaner and less cluttered than it used to be and doesn't stink so much of spoiled meat.

And then I went to Shop-Rite to buy groceries.

Bill463: I should clarify that the Organic Valley milk is fresher. Trust me, I've had plenty of milk go sour early from A&P, Shoprite, etc. We always get our milk at C-Town.

Ianmac: I think part of the problem is people in the neighborhood who half-heartedly throw their trash in the dumpsters under the cover of night even if they're full. The C-Town staff clean their loading area daily and they've participated in the city's tree planting program to try to improve that loading area. Whenever I've seen the delivery trucks idling and have asked them to turn off their engines, they have. But that's another problem altogether.

I disagree. The sidewalk area on Third Street near their storage entrance and dumpsters isn't exactly clean. The delivery trucks are loud early in the morning and often park in the middle of the street.

C-town's milk is fresher than A&P's? Woah! I'm a mean crazy cranky guy without my cheerio's every morning and to me A&P's milk is always the freshest. I actually just bought a new gallon yesterday and the expiration date on it is 9-14. I've never set foot into C-town - although I pass it a lot on my way to the Brownstone. I cannot imagine that the C-town milk is fresher than the A&P. I must go check you out on this! For the record Shop Rite's milk always begins to turn a tad sour before the expiration date.

Thanks to the OP and others for the info. My yard abutts the back of C-Town so I'm hugely interested in anything going on there.

For those who disparage C-Town I have to defend them a bit. For the record I'm a regular Whole Foods and TJ shopper as well as A&P but because C-Town is so close I'm in there constantly for this and that.

Their milk is fresher than A&P's and I know they have a huge turnover in the meat section so that stuff is fresh too. (I'm a vegetarian so I don't have a first hand account.) I agree that they rely a bit too much on heavily scented cleaning products but they do keep the store clean (we have no vermin problems as their neighbor).

I think it's a great little store FOR WHAT IT IS... an independently operated neighborhood grocery. BTW, I'm old enough when these small stores were the norm rather than the exception. I say give C-Town (and whatever it becomes) a break and enjoy the convenience of being able to pop in there on your walk home for a clove of garlic, a can of stewed tomatoes, toilet paper, or a gallon of milk. It serves that purpose beautifully.

One final thought is that they have always been good neighbors to us. I hope the new owners will be the same.

I like Western Beef a lot. The supermarket traditionally served low income neighborhoods, near the projects, but the chain seems to have gone slightly upmarket as some of the low income areas have gentrified. I think Western Beef is definitely an improvement over C-Town, but obviously no comparison to Trader Joe's or Whole Foods...unlesss...unlesss...unlesss. should I say it...unless..

The only other NJ store is in E. Orange. And honestly, their circular looks just like C-Town except for "Western Beef" at the top. Here's hoping it's still better than what's there now.

I was at C-Town this morning and I asked the guy on the check-out what was happening. I couldn't really follow what he was saying with his accent but now I've read this he did say something about Western Beef, which i did not know was a supermarket.
Looking at the website it certainly looks like an improvement, even if it is not the Whole Foods we all wished for.
Whatever goes in, I wonder what sort of impact it will have on the new co-op.

Sadly, you're not far off I suspect. What the price indicates is the confidence of the real estate industry that zoning is for chumps without connections and cash, with them you can do whatever you want.

Note, this property is actually in the Harsimus Cove Historic District. Anyone know how to look up the zoning?

How about a 20 story condo tower squeezed in. They could give it a stoop of steps and and old streetlight to make it look like it fits into the neighborhood...to the blind anyway. Of course a tax abatement goes without saying because how else could one induce developement into such a "blighted area" desperately in neeed of an ugly high rise. Besides, the City Council and Planning Boards need new cars.

No market in that location can compete with Shop-Rite and BJ's just a couple blocks away...WITH parking. It is an economic non-starter.

But in truth, ANYTHING would be an improvement over that disgustingly foul C-Town. I'm sure there is a ghetto somewhere in East Orange where they could re-open.

I vote condos, because of the parking problem what store would want to venture there ? Over in Park Slope you still have low rent stores there as well.
