IMHO, I think Hopkins is the best choice area wise, out of the three and I am familiar all three areas.

May 23, 2010...Vroom and Bergen: 53 year old man was beaten senseless after an argument over a parking spot.

Vroom between Summit and Balwin? I wouldn't. But it's been a while since I walked the area.

Walk around the area and then walk to Journal Square PATH and form your own opinion.

In Jersey City, a lot of your comfort revolves around proximity to the PATH train...it is the lifeline to civilization. If you need a bus to get to PATH life quality of life is downgraded.

I live on Jewett ave between Bergen st and Kennedy blvd Jewett ave is very safer between summit and Lincoln park.

Jewett ave It is great easy walk to the Lincoln park, most of my neighbors walking thier dog early in the morning & late in the evening.
The rate for crime on Jewett is very low according to the City reports.
i moved in from Brooklyn. my Neighbors had moved from Riverdale in the bronx.
my next door neighbors had sold their property in 45 days in full price.
Rental is very tight on Jewett b/c it is mostly residential.
St Peter Collage Dean house has been on this st.
Jewett street is very Good street to live on.
Enjoy

tamm,

That Baldwin location across from that old paper company, Scott????, (pretty far from the courthouse BTW) is an okay walk during the day but not at night.
Between Baldwin and Summit down there is unsavory.

Baldwin on the OTHER side of the tracks is a bit better and anything near the courthouse is probably safe and well patrolled...and you can FALL into the PATH station in a few minutes.
Have you checked smaller apartment buildings a bit up Kennedy or Summit to the North of the Square. Walking on Kennedy is safe...Summit prettty much so.
Rentals shouldn't be too bad with some diligent searching.

Im wit Aurora, I too lived on Belmont and Monticello.... drugs, guns, gangs... FYI there is a lot of "dip" aka angel dust being sold in that area this summer.... people are getting nuts over there...

The old timers in the neighborhood are great, but the kids are really taking over that corner... I do see more police presence then ever before but honestly, thy dont care. I really did enjoy the neighborhood tho and I didnt specifically move because of the crime, but because I needed a bigger place, and everyone is always all in your business over there. But I do, almost with guilt enjoy my new peace and quiet.

I recently found an apt on Jewett ave bet bergen and monticellio...i am hearing that it is safe but the current resident in the studio apt says she heard gunshots at 3am and she has only been there for 3 weeks she said the cops came and everything...other ppl say it is a nice place and honestly i have no clue what the heck to do!! it is affordable with a nice private back yard!! another tenant has been there for a 1yr and he said its not the best neighborhood but it is decent... HELPPPP!

I've lived on Belmont between Bergen and Kennedy for almost a year and I can tell you that there is a lot of drug activity, a lot going on in the street at all hours, and I've heard gunshots on more than a few occassions. I'm comfortable where I live because I don't really spend much time in the neighborhood, outside of my house, BUT I would definitely not live over on that block.

Keep looking. I'm on Fairmount between Bergen andMonticello. With the razor wire parking lots across the street, it looks rough, but my block is within the McGinley Square SID, it's lit up like a ballfield 24/7 and there is really never any trouble on this block.

You have to check block by block.

Belmont, Emory, all nice. Rents go up north of Montgomery but you can still find deals there too. FYI, I will have a share available on September 1 in a large duplex. PM me if you want more info.

As long as you're uptown, you might as well join the Uptown Crew Facebook group. Connect with other locals, get some uptown entertainment, and you can post what you're looking for.

Tamm: Are you completely against sharing an apt?
For $700/mo per roommate you can definitely get something in a decent area!

I just asked a friend that is more familiar with that area. My friend lives on Gardner and Summit and walks to JSQ every morning, anyways her repsonse was:

her: newkirk is by the courthouse that you live in. lmao
her: and there's 9,000 dope heads over there
her: down that side block

Lol, so I dont know, I thought it was an okay block, better then Jewett but there is a lot of action over there....

Disclaimer - im only fighting parking tickets at that courthouse I live in ... Goooo JCPA

No one has really mentioned yet that its quite a long walk to JSQ from Jewett, I live by Montgomery and Bergen and the walk is long enough, Jewett is several blocks farther south. Unless you really love to walk, you'll definitely get sick of it, especially in the rain and snow.

I got robbed there in the foyer of my own apartment building.

Moved downtown shortly thereafter, and wouldn't move back under any circumstances.

I've lived on Jewett btw Bergen and JFK for 4 years (I too am youngish female although I am 5'10" and 160 lbs) - as the poster above mentions my block is pretty nice and is generally quiet and safe-feeling. But it does change a lot when you cross Bergen and head towards Monticello. And I'm generally home at a decent hour; I wouldn't recommend it if you come home late every night. I've never had a problem on the walk along Bergen from the PATH even late at night, but I've only done it after 10pm maybe two or three times.

I don't know about all this gunshot business but it is definitely not an area for the non-street savvy or where you want to be out on the street late at night.

Years ago, I lived near Jewett and Bergen, it got worse as you approcached Monticello. The area was NOT safe. If it has improved by 100% it is STILL not safe.

Problem is the walk back and forth to Journal Square.

Don't do it.

Based on what you said about yourself, working in NYC, hanging out w/friends late, it's a bad choice.

Let us know what your budget for apt is and we can tell you where to look. Generally by Journal Square, McGinley Square, the Heights, even downtown might be affordable if you're sharing a large apt, condo or house. Start first with your budget for housing then maybe some of us might help direct you to specific neighborhoods. Also, you should look for housing close to public transportation (PATH trains)that run 23x7x365 so you don't waste money on cabs late at nite or take a cab to a close location.

As to Jewett Ave late at nite, forget it.

I just moved from this neighborhood, im used to rough neighborhoods, there is a HUGE amount of drug and gang activity in this neighborhood, a guy just got shot in the neck over there last weekend... skip if your truely worried, if your not out wondering late at night or dont mind a little roughness then by all means stay.. check it out around 8pm on a weekend night.. I think you will not stay lol

Even if the apartment is cheap, not a good idea to be walking around that neighborhood at 8:00 P.M. nevermind 11:00 P.M. Police officer was shot and killed there about 3 blocks away last year. Tough neighborhood. Like someone wrote in an earlier responce stay closer to the Square or the Blvd.

Thanks but how is it for a 30yr old female that gets off from her second job at 10pm at night which is in NYC the viliage area, which means that i might get to journal square around 11pm or even if im hanging out with friends and get home late...(i know i am paranoid, but i dont know much about NJ and I have lived in decent parts of NYC all my life)...i hope that walkin home that late from journal square isn't going to get me harrassed!!

its affordable for a reason. isn't your safety worth more than a few hundred a month?

I would look closer to Journal Square, and/or closer to Kennedy Blvd. Late night walks at Jewett & Monticello not advisable... and taxis from Journal Square are a whole other nightmare!
