The guy is back. I saw him tonight by the Hamilton Inn. As he walked by he was hawking stuff he had in a black plastic bag. I heard him saying something about a USB jump-drive or something. I followed him briefly and called the non-emergency number. He looked a bit different without the winter coat and hat he was wearing back in January. He is white, about 40 with a buzz-cut. He is about 6 ft , 180lbs. He wears glasses and has 2 small tear-drop tattoos on the corners of both eyes. He was wearing a dark blue t-shirt with dark shorts, white socks with sneakers. He walks fast and was trying to sell stuff to a couple as they walked past him. Keep an eye out for him and call the cops if you see someone fitting that description sniffing around people's stoops, cars etc. BTW, he walked west on Pavonia and headed south on Monmouth.

Something I know...... that male UPS drivers (brown uniform) are not allowed to wear beards. They can wear a mustache, but not a beard of any kind. Also, the men cannot wear their hair long. If they have long hair, they stuff it up under their cap.

I don't know about USPS or Fed Ex but I know a guy that works for UPS and he had to shave his beard when he got the job and his long haired friend never lets his hair down when he's working.

If you see a "UPS" driver with a beard, goatee or facial hair scruff, or wearing long hair... that's a red flag!

About a year or so ago, there was an individual whose first name is Alex (Alexander) who was stealing packages in Journal Square which was where he lived until his father kicked him out of the home. I saw him on two occasions in the Downtown section recently and alerted the police, but he got away. Currently, there is a warrant for his arrest.

Alex is not tall (5'4 - 5'6"), Filipino, and (please don't take this the wrong way) gay. I mention this only because he wears and flaunts his sexuality boldly. He has dark hair that he sometimes dyes blond. He usually wears a backpack and drapes a "man purse" over his shoulder. He used to brag about living in California with a rich boyfriend.

Hopefully he will be caught soon.

Even after my neighbors package was stolen the USPS was leaving packages on their stoop in plain sight. The guy I ID'd in January wasn't the first person I've seen stealing packages and helped the cops catch. About 3-4 years ago I witnessed 2 guys stealing a UPS package on W. Hamilton Pl. I followed them and the cops got them. I think these delivery people are gonna do what they want and this kind of thing will continue to occur. If it's ever possible make arrangements with a neighbor or a local corner store to sign for the package. Beyond that it's Mail Boxes Etc. or something similar.

I've had multiple packages gone missing from UPS, FedEX, and USPS.

I have stuff shipped to work, or have it delivered with *Adult Signature Required*. Leavin' stuff around is BS

I've almost forgotten this event. A couple of weeks ago I was going to throw our recyclables on a Thursday evening when I found two packages from FedEx in my recycle trash bin.

my wife and i don't remember authorizing FedEx or anyone to leave delivery in our trash - WTF?

I'll have to speak with FedEx, more to come later.

Somewhat related, why don't the USPS mail carriers in JC wear uniforms? If you see someone going into and out of apartment buildings with boxes and mail, it would be easier to know if they're legit if they're wearing a uniform instead of a t-shirt and shorts.

You are welcome to call the East District PD at 201-547-5408. I will PM you the police report number later this evening when my neighbor gets home. We made the report on Saturday around 5pm to the desk officer. It was required for my neighbor because it was her running tights that were stolen on Wednesday 1/20 from her stoop. She had to make an insurance claim to the shipper and I went as a witness since I saw the guy with the package. You can read the first post for any details. I am hoping to hear from a Detective later today so we can do a photo line-up. He will then pass along the info to the Postal cops if they want to pursue federal charges of mail theft etc. I don't think anyone is gonna knock on your door to fill you in on the details but you are welcome to make a simple phonecall or walk over there yourself. They are on 7th. Street between Erie and Grove.

I should have said the Postal police would charge this guy with a federal offense. Stealing mail can mean 5 years and a $250,00 fine. Don't think you'll be seeing this story in the JJ. Too slow developing and not very "sexy". If I had physically tackled the guy that might've been enough. Just glad this dirt-bag is off the streets.

Spoke to a Detective today. This perp could have a serious problem with the Feds since he was stealing mail. I should be meeting with them Monday and will know more then.

I didn't ask his name as I tried to keep back out of the cops way. I will see if I can find some info on him when I go in this weekend. I would not publish any precise info at this time but I will try to find out what neighborhood he is from.

Thanks! My upstairs neighbor was indeed a victim it turns out. Her delivery of some clothing via USPS was stolen and it was probably the box I saw him with that day last week. We are going to go in tomorrow or Sunday to make an official police report. Bummer for her but I am hoping his posing as a Postal worker will add some serious time to his sentence. It was amazing that he was boldly waltzing around taking whatever he wanted. He probably hit a lot of cars downtown as well. A real POS! BTW? This is the 8th dude I helped the cops catch over the years. It never gets old when you can actually snag one of these leeches. Also, if you get a lot of packages delivered make sure the postal people don't just leave it on your stoop in plain sight!

Great job Vigilante and JCPD!

Shows what happens when residents are willing to be on alert and get involved in their neighborhood. Well done!

Just tried to chase down a guy who appeared to be stealing packages and mail/Netflix from people's stoops near Hamilton Park. While exiting my apartment with my dogs he was standing near our gate with a USPS package. He immediately asked if our upstairs neighbor was home. I said I didn't know but I could sign. He said they had to sign then walked away. He was a white dude, about 40-45 but kinda roughed up looking. He was wearing jeans, a tan jacket, a block knit cap. He was wearing eye-glasses and appeared to have tear-drop tattoos near both eyes which immediately made me suspicious. I immediately called the cops and tried to follow the guy but he dissappeared near Brunswick and 9th Street as he had a block long lead on me. The guy could definitely pass himself off as somewhat legitimate but he was rough around the edges.

Thank You and Kudos and Thanks to the JCPD! The cop I flagged down had not gotten the call yet but he reacted quickly and 3 other cars soon showed up. They cuffed the guy and put him in the squad-car. They had all his loot laid out on the trunk of the car. He had pilfered a bunch of stuff by pulling out the alarm tabs. The good thing was he was caught red-handed and they didn't need me to press charges as they had more than enough evidence to charge him outright. Oddly enough he was on his way back toward the downtown area when they got him.
