I eat at or get takeout from Sushi Tango on a monthly basis, and I've never had a problem with the food or service. It's not the best sushi downtown, but referring to it as a "garbage dump" is quite unwarranted.

Wow ASA. Forgot about the La. Don"t know Jerry's but I do remember Pipi"s in that area and also the Hilltop behind Hudson Catholic. I think the Alp's provided car service for the old gal's that ate lunch there. Does anyone remember Ray Grimes on the Blvd. in Union City. Great Steak sandwiches. How about the Driftwood next to the Stanley theater.

I miss Downtown Eddie's. It was where that garbage dump, Sushi Tango is now.
Also, I miss Simple Cafe when Sue and Chin owned it. I second The Canton. It was the most amazing place. It looked like the old supper clubs back in the 50's.

Just to establish my era: my favorite restaurant was Robinson's Steakhouse at Journal Square. But my family were also regulars at The Alps on Bergen Avenue; the State diner on the corner of Bergen and Montgomery; The Glenwood on West Side Avenue; Canton Tea Gardens at Journal Square; Silverod's and Liss's (both pharmacies) lunch counters at Journal Square; Meyer's on Bergen Avenue for burgers, fries, and homemade ice cream; Lee Sims on Bergen Avenue (a few doors down from Meyer's) for chocolates. For Italian, definitely the Tripoli on Newark -- but does anyone remember Jerry's, a small dark Italian restaurant just off Monticello (in the neighborhood of The Astor Bar)? Great thin crust pizza and wonderful homemade tomato sauce! And how about The La on Kennedy Boulevard at Jewett -- the ASA crowd always filled that place with uniform skirts rolled up, drinking cokes (at a nickel a glass) and smoking!

atlhought i moved from jersey city 40 years ago when people ask me where i'm from i tell them "jersey city, fulton off of west side". my mother loved the canton so much that when ever me or my brother where passing by we would pick up chicken chow mein that she would divide up and freeze (sort of a private stash). on the last day of school (number 38) she would take me and my brother to either tippys or roys for an end of school lunch. just this afternoon my wife and my son (he's 4) and i were having a snack at stewarts and i told him this was the only fast food we had (i consider white castle a delicasy) we would go to stewarts on camunipaw ave and the back highway (440). my wife (she's from union city, but i don't hold it against her) and i were sorry to see ilvento's go there were a number of family events there. as for the excel, i could remember ordering loin of pork there and thinking i was a big deal (i was 8). another favorite was charcoal treat i remember the giant barrel of tap birch beer on the counter.
maybe i'll see ya on the square and we'll grab a slice at 3 brothers pizza

Anyone remember the Clam Castle in the Heights? I think it was on Congress street. They had the best pasta. It was run by a couple of brothers. It was strange that they closed immediately after 9/11, as the place was packed every weekend, and was surely making a lot of money.

Pete and Dominick's at Sip and Summit
Brummer's at the Junction Erc's Downtown Starr's on Sterling The Oyster Bay at the Square Liss In a past career I was in many of the JC restaurant kitchens. I never saw a cleaner one than Puccini's. I never saw a filthier one than the Plankboard Inn. I never ate there after that.

I'm going to miss Isabella's and their boliche and the guava y queso empanadas. The place has been dark for at least 2 weeks and now there's a for sale sign on it.

+1! I lived directly across from Lucy's in early to Mid-90's and I ate breakfast and lunch at least 3 or 4 times/week there. She was terrific and unfortunately Isabella's does not provide what she did and at her prices. You are so right that nothing I know provides the home-cooked comfort meals of great soups and stews AND reasonably priced downtown and if so in other parts of JC I plead ignorance. I miss Lucy, but hope her life back home in Puerto Rico with her family is comforting, as it was well-deserved after the passing of her husband..

Still missing Lucy's cafe on the corner of 7th and Erie. No one has yet to fill the void, their soups and stews were the best.

I would work from home occasionaly specificaly to hit Gabagoolz during their limited weekday hours. that and hit it early on Sats when they were open.
The RB/Mozz at Fiores in Hoboken is superior, but obviously no as esy to access from downtown JC.

+1 I loved the RB with mozz and the chicken parm but unfortunately, try as much as I did (I live on 3rd!) Gabagoolz were open only occasionally so never got it as much as I would have liked! Yeah, Glenn still shows up here sometimes and even though running a restaurant based on grill cheese is not a great way to survive with a sucky location, I too miss those great grill cheese sammys.

I miss the sandiwches at Gabagoolz... especially the RB & mozz and chix parm.
Could also go for a sandwich at Melt. in other words: there are not a lot of great sandwiches in town so those spots are missed greatly.

I just found out that the Canton was closed and am devastated. My family has gone their for years and I was going to bring my new family there. We were going to go to the Loews Jersey theater on Jan 30 to see an old James Bond movie. Thank God they are keeping that alive. That theater is, for lack of a better phrase, extremely wonderful. Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!! Not the Canton. They are putting in a Ballys. Puey. That is disgusting. I have so many memories of the Canton.

The Tripoli on the west end of Newark Ave. Downtown J.C. They had the best Italian cheese cake this side of New York. It must be over 15 years since their finish.

Place across from St Al's was called Pompeii Pizza. They used to see Pizza by the slice. Started out at 15 cents a slice, when they raised it to a quarter we though they were over priced.

You forgot to mention Jules on West Side Ave and Montgomery Street. This was one of the best Italian restaurants near St Peters College.
The Glenwood Restaurant on Glenwood Ave. Great singles bar in late 70's early 80's. Excell in Journal Square. After the basketball ganes all the guys and gals from Hudson Catholic, St. Dominics Academy, St Peters Prep and St Aloysius Academy would go there. Best burgers in town.

I know it wasn't technically a restaurant, but I'm surprised....not one single mention of Uncle Joe's.
How many years has it been gone now? 4? I'm not an anti- new resident guy at all, and I know alot had changed downtown prior to Joe's actually getting condo'd (is that a word?), but for me Uncle Joe's going away was as good a historical marker as any between the way it was/the way it is (or at least my perception of). Why oh why can't I just go into a muddy backyard, sit on a filthy couch, and put my beer on a telephone cable spindle? GWB
