bump the old thread:

* aetna street (if you'd seen it, you'd agree it's weird)
* paterson plank road (no planks lately)
* long street (very short)
* beach street (no beach)

and of course:

* pavonia avenue, because it's hardly an avenue, is nowadays broken into 7 or 8 pieces, is a latinized transliteration of the name of an unsuccesful Dutch colonist (Pauw), and that name Pauw meant "peacock," which is as beautiful and un-JC like a bird as I could imagine, except perhaps the bird of paradise... which, like the peacock and tens of thousands of JC residents... has its ancestral home in south and/or east asia

Duh.

Yes I know Manila is the capital of the Phillipines. And I LIVE on Manila and don't see any Filipinos around here.

Ansky, you might need a seeing eye dog!

Manilla is crawling with Filipinos and Filipino Americans, since so many own those houses from 6th street down and particularly when they have the Filipino Festival on Manilla every year.

"Town Square Pl"

But seriously... I'd go with Grove/Manila/Grove... makes it hard to give directions to the store... same with 1&9/139/Observer Hwy/etc.

Mark.

3rd St.

Cracks me up every time I walk or drive by. I start going into Beavis and Butthead mode: "Heh-heh....you said '3rd St.'"

Oh, mercy.

*****************

ansky, when we rented at Manila & 9th from 2001-2003, more than half of that group of townhouses between 9th and Pavonia were owned and/or occupied by Filipinos. My wife (a filipina) was kinda annoyed by this fact.

I think all of those large and rather gross houses on the west side of Manila from 1st to Pavonia were originally made available to Filipinos as part of the "sister city" program that also resulted in the change of the street name. Though some have changed hands in the interim, just by walking by I'd guess that 1/4 to 1/3 are still Filipino-occupied.

In the late 70's early 80's, part of Grove was renamed to honor or acknowledge the growing and vibrant Filipino community. I was pretty young but remember other groups that had a longer history in Jersey City being very upset because it was considered a political move to garner support among Filipinos.

A few years later, Marin Boulevard was named to acknowledge the Puerto Rican community in the downtown section.

Not many people know that Christopher Columbus Drive used to be Railroad Avenue before the railroad trestle was torn down in the early 1960's.

Perhaps Grove should have been subtitled with "Manila Avenue" to prevent confusion like 6th Avenue (Avenue of the Americas). Rather than renaming Newark Avenue, there are signs acknowledging "little India," the vibrant Indian business area.

OH YEAH, weirdest street names: DICK Street behind Number 11 School and WALDO Avenue (named after Samuel Waldo - prominent JC resident in the 1860's)... I suppose Waldo was cool a hundred forty years ago.

Tough call. This is an egreious one, maps say Luis Munoz Marin, but signs say Marin.

Where have you seen street signs in Jersey City that say "Henderson Street"? I'd love to take a picture of one, for posterity!

Correction: Philippine-American Friendship Day Parade,
although the parade proper goes down Montgomery.
Maybe thats where all of the Filipinos have gone.

They are pronounced the same way and are in close proximity of each other. I'm sure there is a ton of mix-up.

Is this mix-up a Jersey thing?

People seem to have managed in Manhatten where both the streets and avenues are numbered and cross one another!
Not to forget Queens where there is a 60th Road, 60th Drive, 60th Avenue, 60th Street and 60th Place; an example not limited to the number 60.

And some cross each other. And some are discontinuous; stopping and starting a good distance apart.

New York artist John Fekner back in the 1970s & 80's wrote "Wheels Over Indian Trails" all over the country. Here is one from the early 80's in Long Island City -- on the Pulaski Bridge overpass at the Queens Midtown Tunnel.

Another pronunciation giveaway is Pavonia (puh VOH nya) often mispronounced by newcomers like the shrub or the Ohio city (puh VOH nee uh). When I was a newcomer, my uncle schooled me on this one so I wouldn't embarrass myself in public.

As soon as I saw the subject name, I thought VROOM!

I grew up in central Jersey, and the news always said suh-caucus. When I moved up here, people made fun of how I said it wrong. Going to the source, I've been to Secaucus Municipal Court, and they say see-caucus, so I figure if that's how they say it, then that's what is right.

Now, the other street I didn't know how to pronounce when I moved up here was Tonnelle. I thought it was Tuh-nell. But I've heard enough people say tunnel-ee now, that I guess that's the answer.
