The latest Fairleigh Dickinson poll reports 62% oppose a gas tax hike, and even among Democrats more than half don't want it raised.

I would argue that based on my salary, I fit that description. Heck, by some people's standards, I would be classified as "part of the problem" and a "one percenter" and I sure AF care about how much I pay in taxes and how little I get in return for that. Why shouldn't every citizen, particularly those paying a small fortune in yearly taxes, feel entitled to some sort of return on their contribution?!? Other states around the nation seem to do much better with less. Why can't we expect as much? Or, more?

Honestly, the state of the roads here is an embarrassment.
The size of some of the pot holes is criminal. The repairs that are done are either non-existent (I can't believe the craters on some of the roads seemingly get ignored so long) or are cheap and not going to last more than a few months. Gas tax should be raised on the condition that the additional tax revenue is reinvested directly into infrastructure.

I'm a liberal Democrat, but I don't b@tch and moan anywhere near as much about my share of the tax bill that goes to support a military protecting your capital, your oil, your defense contracts.

A big issue is the trust fun keeps getting raided to cover other things besides what it was supposed to cover: transportation.
If the tax is raised, what is to stop the State government from just raiding it again, putting the fun back into the red?

The revenue is fine, the problem is that it costs 8X the national average to pave a mile of highway, and 3X the closest state.

If we didn't have the toll that the prevailing wage constraints puts on our budget our money could go 35% farther. That's a huge cost. Imagine the impact that money could have on improving NJTransit, for example. But its slush money for the Democrats in Trenton, so it won't go away.

Is it really any surprise that those who use gasoline don't want to foot the bill for the destruction that vehicles do to the roads?
It's typical that the blame gets shifted on the Democrats when in reality it is simply a matter of fact that much of this state is heavily car dependent. Instead of increasing public transit, administration after administration has gutted it, regardless of party. The gasoline tax should be increased. There needs to be further incentive for mass transit. Our roads are too dire to continue this way.

Two things-we're pretty much the highest taxed population among all the states, so I'm no offended we have the second lowest gas tax. Next, we get very low value from the money we spend on infrastructure, because of the 'prevailing wage' constraints that our Democrat party uses to buy special interest votes.

raise tolls. they impact everyone that uses infrastructure. Gas taxes hurt those that cannot afford to buy a brand new fuel efficient car.

Or maybe it's because we have the lowest gas taxes in the country at the same time that we have a lot of roads and bridges and tunnels that need fixing up? Which is pretty evident when you see that half of Jersey City's escape routes are under construction.
I do have to laugh at this suggestion: Quote: Voters also opposed by 56 percent to 33 percent any deal in which the gas tax is increased in exchange for a reduction in the state's tax on estates worth at least $675,000. Why the Eff would anyone agree to this? Sure, let's have the poor and middle class pay more for gas so that people making more money can get a tax break! That's not an "in exchange" that's a shift in who is paying.
