a proper police dog should be able to be beaten off TWICE by a suspect.

What a bizarre thread.

While we're throwing out bogus statistics and percentages based on assumptions, what percentage of drivers entering JC from 1/9 at or around Communipaw are travelling from Turnpike Exit 15E or from Route 1/9?

Answer: I don't know, but that doesn't seem to stop anybody here from acting like they do, so I'll go and make one up: 85%.

Cops know what they're looking for...

Call it a "DWI Checkpoint" and everyone is happy.

Someone should do a quick survey of how many ACLU members live in Greenville. You know, the old "put your money where your mouth" thing....

Cops: Jersey City police dog Froto corners -- and bites -- car thief

by Tom Shortell/ The Jersey Journal
Wednesday April 22, 2009, 7:31 PM

Jersey City police dog Froto helped catch an alleged car burglar early Wednesday despite the man punching the dog in the head

Jersey City police dog Froto helped to apprehend one of two alleged car burglars early today despite being punched in the head repeatedly.

At about 11:58 p.m. Tuesday, a city resident reported that two men were breaking into his 1997 Infiniti parked on Stegman Avenue, reports said.

When he shouted at them, the two men fled in the Infinity and a 1998 Nissan Maxima, which police later identified as a stolen vehicle, reports said.

Police on patrol in the area located the vehicles and pulled them over on Olean Avenue, reports said.

But the suspected burglars got out of the cars and ran, reports said. Najaquan Baker, the driver of the Maxima, fell and was tackled and arrested by police, reports said.

The driver of the Infiniti, Laten Butler, ran south on Olean Avenue, but Officer Louis Mecka released his K-9 partner Froto after shouting several times for Butler to stop, reports said.

Froto caught up to Butler and bit him in the rear, but Butler beat the dog off with several blows to the head. Froto then bit into Butler's right arm, but Butler again punched the dog in the head and broke free, reports said.

Butler ran to the Maxima and jumped in through a broken window and Froto followed, diving through the broken window and biting Butler until he was arrested, reports said.

Butler, 20, of Irvington, and Baker, 24, of Jersey City, were charged with burglary, theft by unlawful taking, possession of burglars tools, receiving stolen property and resisting arrest.

Butler was also charged with injuring a law enforcement animal, reports said.

Despite the beating he took, Froto reported for duty the next morning. "He takes it like champ. His tail was wagging the whole time," Mecka said.

The ACLU left out the fact that he was an unemployed 25 yr old male driving a $100,000 mercedes with spinners.
I Guess he dropped off the stash already?

lets talk about the 4 cops in Oakland that lost their lives while conducting a routine stop on a convicted felon....

God rest their souls.

Should the cops just not patrol Newark at all? Enough of this PC garbage.

I don't see how my statements implied that minorities have something to hide. Leaving that aside, racial profiling is a legal and political issue that has made it to the courts. Just google "Racial profling in New Jersey" if you want to research this issue. Here's a quote from the ACLU's press release on a racial profiling suit they filed:

NEWARK, N.J. -- The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey today filed a lawsuit on behalf of Willie Nevius, an African American driver who was improperly stopped and searched on the New Jersey Turnpike.

"I felt humiliated by this experience," said Nevius, a 38-year-old man who currently resides in North Carolina. "I didn't do anything wrong, and there was nothing wrong with my car, so the police stopped me for only one reason: I am a black man."

According to Wikipedia, Newark is 25% white, 75% non-white. So if you did stops of people driving from Newark to Jersey City, statistically you'd be stopping a high percentage of minorities and that's why it would be racial profiling. What am I missing?

To say anything about racial profiling is off the mark. If anything, it would be geographical profiling, if there is such a thing. And I have no problem with profiling, whichever kind, if it gets the job done.

I agree with the checkpoint or something, maybe video camera watching cars & plates with the amount of cars that are stolen here in JC so they can track the plate going accross the bridge & maybe notify the PD when the oners finds their car missing in the morning or something like that.
I cant believe I slept thru this, its right in my neighborhood!

I disagree with the checkpoint but how the hell is it racial profiling? Aren't you guilty of what you are trying to accuse icechute of? Only minorities live in that area?

Please explain.

Because Newark is mostly minority. To not do racial profiling, you'd have checkpoints at random entry points to JC.

Seriously, how much of the crime here do you think would be averted if there were State Troopers stationed at the Skyway and 1&9 Bridge?

Sort of like our own 'Checkpoint Charlie'.

That's illegal. It's called racial profiling.

Jersey City police dog subdues teen car theft suspects

by Charles Hack
Monday March 23, 2009

With an assist from police dog Froto, Jersey City police arrested five Newark joyriders who tried to get away by ramming the police vehicles with a stolen van early yesterday morning, police reports said.

Charges against the Newark teenagers, ages 14 to 17, included aggravated assault on a police officer, burglary, theft, receiving stolen property and possession of burglar tools, report said.

Responding to a report that a group of juveniles was stealing a vehicle on Clendenny Avenue at 3:33 a.m., Officer Louis Mecka and police dog Froto arrived in a Jeep and then trailed the group as they drove east on Williams Avenue, reports said.

When backup arrived, Mecka pulled in front the stolen van at Communipaw and Mallory avenues and the backup police vehicle pulled behind it, reports said.

The driver of the van then reversed at a high speed, slamming the police vehicle to its rear, before lunging forward and hitting the front driver's side door and running board of Mecka's Jeep.
The teenagers were about to run when Mecka, holding Froto by his leash, warned, "Police K-9, stop or I will release my dog," reports said.

Froto began to bark loudly and the suspects leaped back into the stolen vehicle, reports said.
The teenagers were taken to the Hudson County Juvenile Detention Center, reports said.
