4-6 inches would not have been pretty after all the rain weve had lately.

Has there been anything near that much so far this year ?

I was caught in the deluge near EWR on the way home, it was definitely not pleasant.. You could literally see streams of water falling off the sky. Glad it was not too bad in town.
And..., thanks for the metrics MDM as always!

Looks like JC was spared the worst of the storm. It looks like the real heavy stuff went well North of us. Some areas looked like they got 4 to 6 inch at a rate of almost 2 inches an hour.

Thank you for the heads up. Very much appreciated. After being offline most of the weekend, I had completely missed this information.

1.5-2.5" predicted tonight: clean your street corner drains, they are full of debris from the previous storm! I saw countless plastic bottles and doggy bags hanging in there walking yesterday, I did my part cleaning.

Jersey City is dumping raw sewage into Hudson river. Too bad it didn't help us anyway. Jersey City Dumping sewage to Hudson River [!SCRIPT FILTERED!]

Please DTJC residents - take off your shoes before you set foot in your place. The streets are covered with watered down sewage from all the basements being pumped out. It is third world.

remember how they had the truck with loud speakers back in the day driving around to "spread the word" on things. I suggest bringing that back out of retirement...

Speaking of drainage and Newark Bay. For the last month crews have been working at night laying down large cement drainage pipes across all lanes of rt 440 from Country Village into Newark Bay. They started near Danforth and put 4 or 5 down already one maybe every 300 yards going towards Bayonne. They are either just to drain the rt 440 roadway into Newark Bay or they are also tied into the CV sewage system.

They put a super pump in a few years ago that drains into Newark Bay.

During Sandy in Society Hill the water didn?t made it up to the condo?s along Newark Bay but what happened was that the water from Newark Bay back flowed into the big cement drainage pipes and caused the water to come out of all of the street sewers. That is what caused the flooding down there which destroyed a lot of vehicles (no condo's). Everyone was watching the back of their condos and to their surprise the water started to accumulate in the front/streets. I wonder if the new rt 440 pipes have some sort of back flow valve.

That was a while back, but I recall the point was to keep it from overflowing in normal, not storm conditions. There's simply no way not to overflow our system in big storms.

We are incapable of doing that in a major storm, so the issue is can we keep our streets and basements from flooding by not using them as a holding tank?

$8billion estimated cost in 2011 (not just Jersey City).

This link shows the sandbags blocking the outflow pipe.

I think JC will have to separate storm water / sewer or do what Atlanta is doing: build flood tunnels to hold the storm surge.

Btw: Just measured the water level in a bucket I left outside to check the rain amount... just a hair under 4 inches.

FYI, the PATH is suspended between JSQ-33 and HOB-33 due to a power problem. My guess is because of the rain, hopefully they restore service before the afternoon rush...

5/5/217 2:30 pm:

Rt 440 grid lock near Country Village going towards Journal Square. Rt 440 closed at Danforth so cars and trucks need to turn up Danforth.

Bayonne around Twin City mall. Whole parking lot is under two feet of water. The intersection at the entrance is also flooded.

Street going toward Turnpike by Quick Check is closed. You can?t take the loop onto the TP you have to go down a few blocks.

MDM, can you see what the current water table levels were at? I've been through torrential rainstorms before and this has never happened. I wonder if the ground already had limited ability to absorb more water because it's been raining so much the last few weeks.

The only recent water table info I found from USGS is for Atlantic City.

Sewage started backing up into my unit on Bright St., thankfully it receded soon after it started.

Might get a bit more later.
Local stations don't all have rain gauges but I just looked at Caven Point and it was reporting 3.69" so far today. Wow-

I think my Dad may lose his apple and pie cherry crop again this year (in Vermont). Warm weather followed by these cold snaps is hell on fruit trees.

There is talk of a major frost in the apple growing regions of PA over the next few days.

Then June looks to be above normal in temperature.

My basement currently is running two 1/2 hp pumps, a pretty rare occurrence.
