Governor Fulop will get the wheels of consolidation moving. It will be completed during the second term of President Fulop.

I won't hold my breath, but the numbers are compelling and the taxpayer savings would be immense. Hudson County has a larger population AND higher density than many major cities, including Boston, Seattle, Denver, Baltimore, DC and Portland.

One day, when consolidation happens (again, as it did in the late 19th century), and the Hudson river-side cities of Hudson county combine once again (as they were back when the City of Bergen existed), we'll all of a sudden have a city of 400,000 people - a city with as many people as Las Vegas, in a space one quarter of the size, bordering along NYC.
That's when we will get recognition from NYC, and from the country, and from the world. And it'll happen, some day.

Healy's naked antics turned the race and the story into a bit of a joke in outsider's eyes. I prefer that they ignore us rather than use us as a punch-line. Hopefully we will now be taken more seriously as a city and as an economic force in the metro area. Lets be honest, NYers love to snicker at New Jersey. Lets make it so that we have the last laugh.
BTW? I have recently noticed that many of my NYC/Brooklyn Facebook friends have suddenly started posting stories about an outrageous natural gas pipeline planned to terminate in NYC. It's like they had no idea that the thing is a done deal. Many of them have posted comments like "call Gov. Cuomo's office" etc. I keep telling them "too late" the things nearly finished. If it's on this side of the Hudson then they are ignorant.

In all fairness to the Times, their newsroom has fallen victim to budget cuts and layoffs - more so than the WSJ. The WSJ only beefed up its coverage of the NY metro area after News Corp. bought it and poured resources into it. (It also helps that several WSJ reporters and editors live in JC.) The deeper pockets at News Corp. are a double-edged sword. It is News Corp., after all, and Pulitzers have been very scarce at the WSJ since Murdoch bought it.

In the past 3 months, the NY Times has done ~28 stories that mention Jersey City.
The Wall Street Journal has done ~114 stories that mention Jersey City. Just mentioning isn't great evidence of what the stories may be about. I excluded obituaries, items on their events calendar, or sports. It is something though!

You can e-mail the Metro Desk at the NY Times and ask about the lack of coverage. Here is their e-mail address: metro@nytimes.com

"Aside from proximity" reminds me of "Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?" Our location is the key to the future of this city just as it was the key to the past in the industrial/railroad era. Remaining a hidden gem sounds nice, and let's face it--we're never going to pull much business or tourism away from Manhattan. But "buzz" does help. Look at Brooklyn. Also press attention puts pressure on the government at all levels to keep honest and manage the city effectively. As much as I respect our local newspapers, they don't have the reach of the Times.

Why is this such a surprise? Being so close to NYC means that JC will always be under its shadow. It is only relevant in the mainstream media because of this fact. Aside from proximity, why else would Goldman relocate some of its workers to Exchange Place? If you want to argue tax incentives, I doubt if someone offered the firm a mega break to set up shop in Camden that they would seriously entertain that option. Anyway, with Fulop's win, maybe new positive publicity will put this place back on the map. Maybe... But then again, to radryan03's point, what's wrong with being a hidden gem?

Exactly. It's not a question of needing validation. I wouldn't live here if I needed that. It's really about the the Times recognizing that JC and NJ more broadly are a huge part of their market, which they now underserve. (I'd note that WNYC does seem to go out of its way to serve JC and NJ.) I want the benefit that the Times' coverage would bring to JC.

I was going to start the same thread. Not only is JC the largest city that borders NYC, it is also closer to Manhattan than most of the rest of NYC. But to the august institution, we're just another Yonkers.
Would any other big city newspaper completely ignore it's largest neighbor? Would the Times ignore Newark?

Exactly! This mentality of somehow being connected or part of NYC is ridiculous in this city. Quite frankly, I think it is a reason why voter turn out is so low here. More people associate being from NYC rather than JC even though they live here. I guarantee that if you give many of those people the option to vote in NYC elections they would be out there like a locust swarm. Edit:Grammar

Why do you all feel the need to be validated by NYC? That's the question you should be asking yourselves. Be happy Healy is gone, and look to a better future for this city.

I did see it on Channel 7 last night and Channel 4 this morning. That counts for a little.

If nothing else, that Obama's endorsement meant next to nothing is worthy of some ink.

Why does this surprise anyone? This is why I don't buy any of the New York papers or read them. I care about NYC just as much as they care about JC.

You're right when it comes to size but, in fact the story's pretty compelling. It wasn't just another local election. The Journal seems to have recognized this.

Always been this way. We don't exist for either New Jersey or New York. Ever try finding out what happened in JC by reading the Star Ledger?

Yeah, I found it pretty annoying, but not surprising. Like all those climate or demographic maps that stop at the Hudson. Fact is JC is 1/32 the size of NYC. We're a flea on their ass in that respect.

Is anyone bothered by the fact that the "paper of record" has written nary a word on the political tsunami that took place in New Jersey's second largest city last night? Or did I miss the article?
(BTW, The Wall Street Journal's done two pieces on successive days.)
