Utterly hilarious that Skinners opposes. What in the world are they thinking?

I didn't know until reading this that Skinner's opposed the plaza. Well, I won't be going THERE anymore - if stores won't play nice, I won't shop, easy as pie.

I was told at the HCNA that the plans are still ping ponging thru City Hall.

The layers of incompetence in this city remind me of a Cretan Croissant.

Terrible if this plan gets scrapped based on a couple of whiny businesses. Unlike the majority here, I am actually reasonably sympathetic to certain restaurants over their opposition to food trucks within a certain distance of their business. But the opposition by some businesses to the pedestrian plaza? Totally asinine.

I'm sympathetic to elderly people who are accustomed to being dropped off in front of their doctor's office, but you know what? Technically, they shouldn't even be doing that. Stopping a car in front of a business and temporarily double-parking on Newark Ave to drop someone off is, frankly, completely inconsiderate and ties up traffic on an already too-narrow, too-busy thoroughfare. Based on the limited number of parking spots on Newark Ave, if they were to park their car (as they should), they were more likely than not parking off of Newark Ave. anyway.

Just ask the city to pay for a couple of wheelchairs to help people go the couple-hundred feet to the nearest corner, rather than ruining a very nice benefit for the rest of the city.

I don't really frequent any of those businesses except for Skinner's Loft (rarely) and Tendershoot (very rarely), but they will not be getting any business from me anymore. The pedestrian plaza was great last year, and I already miss it this spring/summer.

It was awesome that all the restaurants could expand their outdoor seating, and I just don't believe that the other businesses are damaged by increased foot traffic. I know that my boycott of these few establishments won't do much, but if it was their objections to the plaza that kept it from coming back this year, anything I can do to reduce their income and expedite their move out of DTJC is a good thing.

Skinners Loft
Dr. Siegel, Desai, and Savoy
Pharmacy
Grove Medical Associates
Fussy Friends
Tender Shoot Farm

Grove Med. Assoc has offices ALL THE HECK OVER JC. If someone is coming there via car, there is no reason they can't go to another office, for example the one in Newport.

Given the fact that it still hasn't happened yet, I wouldn't be surprised if it got voted down.

I can understand why a medical practice would be opposed (no drop-off for elderly/infirm patients), but if a lane for delivery is included in the plan, why would businesses object? It's not like there's a whole lot of customer parking on that stretch of Newark to begin with, and foot traffic is shown to increase with these street closures, leading to more potential business.

Fussy Friends likely does a good amount of business in dog food and is making the assumption that folks are less likely to purchase if faced with carrying that same dog food 100-200ft to their car.

I believe their objections were based on trash pickup or lack thereof. Still, if they can keep everything off the street I'm sure this can be fixed somehow.

You're assuming they have some well thought out objections other than, "Less options to get here = worse for business." As was proven in NYC, the businesses don't necessarily know what is going to help them out. With each new pedestrian plaza in NYC the local businesses would pitch a holy fit about how the city was putting them out of business and with each new plaza the local businesses made more money.

Also, there is going to be a delivery lane, so that is not an issue.

It's amazing that a business like a restaurant would think that the small stretch of street being closed would affect their business. Do they think that their customers are driving to Jersey City, and parking on the street, directly in front of the restaurant? I'm just so confused by any resistance to this...

Skinners never took advantage of sidewalk seating during the pilot last summer. Even so, those windows in front open up completely. You'd think they'd prefer to have their customers viewing a (potentially pretty) plaza, rather than a narrow sidewalk and street.

Jersey City officials to discuss future of Newark Ave. pedestrian plaza

By The Jersey Journal The Jersey Journal
February 23, 2015 at  2:49 PM

City Councilwoman Candice Osborne will host a public hearing next week on the city's planned creation of a pedestrian plaza on Newark Avenue.

The city had a trial run of a plaza last year, closing down Newark Avenue to vehicular traffic between Erie and Grove streets after 3 p.m. on weekdays and all weekend. It was welcomed by pedestrians but created a hassle for some business owners and Newark Avenue residents.

City officials are considering a more permanent version, like the ones seen in midtown Manhattan.

The hearing will take place on Tuesday, March 3 at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 280 Grove St.

I am currently in Honolulu on business and if dtjc could even come close to their plaza I will be for it 110% they do not have high end stores, Macy's just packed up and left and has been replaced with Walmart but there is still lots of stuff to do, eat and see...

The plaza concept was being tested this year. No word on if or when it will be a permanent change (akin to Mad. Sq. Park or Times. Sq. in the city). I think for now, they've halted it given the colder months and lack of demand.

Check back in the spring.
