Fruit guy was Bill Horton. He lived upstairs from me on Coles in the 80s. We always had about to rot bananas and other delicacies. If I recall he had a long fight over the eminent domain of his fruit stand, and I think it's just the landscaping on the southwest corner of the parking garage now. His fruit stand was more aesthetic.

I'm new to JC (and the USA as a whole, fresh off the boat a year ago or so). These older names are far superior to the replacements. Actually, one of my peeves is the renaming of everything and anything to historical figures. Maybe if it was just surnames, it'd sit right... but it seems kinda odd to see things like "Martin Luther King Drive", "Ronald Reagan Boulevard" or "Warren G. Harding Middle School".

Then again, I'm probably showing my ignorance and Jackson, Henderson, and Manila were probably named after people (but at least it was just the surname)

I think I read on here the houses on Manila and the ones on the North side of Montgomery were built for Filipino nurses because of a nursing shortage. Any more info on that? I'm assuming the houses on Manila was for the ones that worked at St Francis and the ones on Montgomery the Old JCMC. Did the Heights have a neighborhood like this for Christ Hospital and did Greenville hospital have one as well?

I know a lot of Filipinos live on the Westside but was a specific area of the Westside made for them back then like the two locations in Downtown?

Anyone remember when the cop had a little house on the Boulevard up where Kensington Avenue intersected with it?

I can remember how cool it was in the shade under the trestle on Rail Road Avenue on the hot summer days.

Hudson Boulevard

We should change Newark Avenue to Hudson Blvd

Hudson Blvd went through several Hudson towns, Newark Ave does not. Personally, I believe all of the original names should return and allow new streets to have these names.

Like a property tax reval should we then re-name the streets every five to ten years ? Actually bad example 'cause we have revals nearly every thirty years ? But you get the idea.

I don't know addresses or even names of the businesses. If anyone has any recollection, I would very much like to hear from you.

Try the New Jersey Room in the main library on Montgomery St. and Jersey Ave. They have old photos and books on our history. Also you might want to try the Jersey Journal archives in the periodical research area. What section of town was the bakery and furniture store located in ? There are some historians within Jersey City you could also contact.

Here's one I have yet to find anyone who remembers.
On Wayne Street across from #9's playground in the middle of the block was a Mom & Pop store. Pretty sure it was next to a Fire House Station. This is a real way back question. Love to hear from anyone who recalls the name of the store or anything about the owners.
While I'm at it, anyone recall a little shop named Georgie's on Wayne in the St. Bridget's neighborhood? It was a regular little store where you could get pretty much anything you need. He always had toys in the window.

Heights,
do you remember the Polio Bros grocery store that was next door to the fire station on Central Ave. ? How about the A&P store on Montross & Beech street ?

I remember a produce guy in the 1960s and 70s. I'm not sure of we are thinking of the same guy.
This guy would have produce baskets in the back of his flatbed truck
and he would walk beside the truck yelling out things like:
"GET YOUR ONIONS, GET YOUR TOMATOES. He would walk next to the truck while someone drove it really slowly.
