So does: JCMC Christ Hospital Hoboken Medical Center New York Presbyterian NYU Langone Meadowlands Hospital Pretty much every major hospital has its share of scary 1 star reviews. Yelp reviews when it comes to anything medical need to be taken with a grain of salt. Its not like a restaurant where people go out to have a good time. Having to go to the hospital is almost always a miserable experience. Once over, people want to forget about it and are not as likely to leave a review. The exceptions being the people where things went wrong or have an axe to grind. So you have a strong bias in negative reviews.

Englewood has some pretty horrific reviews on Yelp. I would stay away from there.

Which hospital? JCMC does have a NICU. My comment was about St. Mary's. I delivered both children at New York Hospital Cornell.

A low risk routine pregnancy can turn into an emergency quite quickly. It happened to me. Very glad to be at hospital with a top ranked NICU.

Our daughter was born at JCMC last March. There was no car seat requirement. We put her in a bassinet stroller and walked home.

Exact same experience. I wonder if that policy is still in place. My daughter was born 15 years ago, so I have no idea about recent policy changes in that regard. But, it definitely seems arbitrary to require a carseat when some people don't actually own a car.

My wife did? it was great. Delivery rooms are private. Post delivery rooms are not, but there are around 10 of them and they try not to double up. If it looks like you are going to get a roommate you can pay extra too keep the room private, provided they have the space. In our case we had a private room except for the last few hours of our stay. Because the rooms have 2 beds they let me use the unoccupied bed at no extra cost. That was nice. Dads also get a menu with meals. It felt more like we were staying in a hotel. The staff was really great and we were very happy with the entire experience.

For our 2nd we decided the Manhattan OB and hospital thing was just too much hassle, went with Dr Brescia in Hoboken and gave birth at then St Marys. Perfectly nice experience for a low risk birth, and so many local friends were able to drop by my wife got a little tired of it! Now, that was 15 years ago when their unit was brand new, don't know if it's gotten ragged or not.

Some hospitals call it a Code Pink system. I suspect they exist mostly to guard against kidnapping by estranged mothers or fathers.

They gave us our own room but I guess if it gets busy then yes they could double up.
As for the car seat, that pissed me off too. I lived across across from JCMC and they made me get a car and bring it. I was supper pissed. They don't care if you don't have a car or not they need to see you leave with a car seat in a car. You can't walk home.

I can second what richieveal said about Hackensack: the absolute best. My daughter was born there, and it couldn't have been a better experience. Great nurses, caring staff, everything was smooth. As mentioned, the food was great, and the recovery room was excellent. I believe it was a shared room (can't remember exactly) but I don't recall anyone else being there.
And, while his comment about feeling like someone is always watching you seems weird, I can also corroborate that. Babies are (or, used to be) outfitted with a special wristband that would set off alarms if it crosses the thresholds of the neonatal wing / floor. Apparently, there is a constant fear (if well founded, or not, I have no idea) that babies can be stolen by someone. It seems borderline crazy/paranoid, but I think hospitals are forced into these measures by insurance companies. Other than that, the whole experience in Hackensack was awesome. One last thing: at the time my daughter was born, it was required that in order to leave the hospital with your baby, you had to bring along a car seat. No carseat, no baby released to the parents. We used to live down the street from the hospital (literally a half mile walk, or less) and my plan was to just carry the baby home, and that plan had to be scrapped in favor of a car pickup because of the car seat requirement. Not sure if those rules are still in place, or if they are/were unique to Hackensack, but I have heard similar stories from other people at other hospitals.

thanks...do you recall if JCMC give you a separate room or shared room? I know both places have NICU if we need it.

I had my daughter there 5 years ago and it was great. We have insurance and we were given the royal treatment.
My wife and I delivered first child in the city, at NY Presbyterian Cornell, which we thought would be the best because of its reputation. The delivery room was great but afterwards we were booked with another lady while she recovered. It was hell. Our second was at Hackensack, which was like a 4 star hotel. The best but it was a little drive. I would put my experience in JC very close to Hackensack say 3 star, not a 4 star because the food at Hackensack was actually amazing. Other than that I thought it was great and we lived only one block away. My real disappointment with all these hospitals is that they really limit alone time with just the father. I was made to feel it wasn't my child and I must be in the vicinity of the mother at all times. It really pissed me off.

Hello everyone..we are expecting a new born in July and I wanted to find out how's the JCMC's maternity ward. Her doctor is is linked with JCMC and Hackensack. I know JCMC is a Magnet hospital and part of Barnabas group. Just wanted to find out from the locals who have used their services for baby delivery and the nursing staff.
