From what I have researched this practice was started in 2015 by home owners. They painted blue lines on curbs to show their support for the police. This was done as a response to the negative publicity aimed at the police after the recent string of shootings involving police officers. It may have been adopted by municipalities but it is not an "us against them" demonstration as is kencares suggested.

I'm all for good police--Police who both protect civilians and police the police. But the thin blue line was not recently "invented" as 135JC suggests, it's part of a systemic us-vs-them mentality that is at the root of the problem we face.
Cops do not inherently deserve respect. They have to earn it. You don't get respect through corruption or by painting lines on our streets. Who painted/approved the lines? Terrence, can you please investigate?

Try going without the police and let's see how long you last. It's a shame you have all this resentment towards those who keep you safe. Try to break out of your liberal brainwashing. Being a roofer or cab driver is more dangerous. They just like to play it up so no one can negotiate aggressively with them at contract time.

What's the deal with the blue line painted down Montgomery st between the yellow lines and the red line painted on Newark Ave?
