I guess I'm...offended? 1. I don't have high cholesterol, but thanks for your concern. 2. Voyeuristic? Are you sure you know what that means? 3. If I were a herbivore, wouldn't high cholesterol be unlikely? So many questions.

This. Every weekend, even during what has been a remarkably quiet Summer this year, Dullboy is often packed, or at least well patronized. The cocktails are always on point, and I honestly think its ambiance is the best of any other bar in DTJC.

Rumor, rumor, rumor, what JClist is good at indeed. I was at Dullboy yesterday and the place was pretty much filled. Vibe is goooood there. Can't imagine how it must be in the WE.

Just when I think I should see what's happening on JC List,
I see a thread like this that reminds me of why I stay away from JC List for long periods at a time.

PJs: the projects. Or whatever they're called now, low-income subsidized housing. There is a bodega, or what you might call a corner convenience store, that serves primarily the people from the projects, on the corner of 5th (4th? I can't recall). It is busy with economic transactions, of both the legal and illegal vein.

huh? PJs start up on 3rd and serving in bodega on 5th?

I'm a big fan of Alex's for dinner (not a run in pizza slice). My bf and I go regularly and I'm a big fan of starting with some pasta fagioli soup and then pollo all giambatta. Everytime we pass, we can't stop laughing because the owner will exclaim every single time, "Very fresh, very delicious"! Plus, it's byob and I'm on a budget so not complaining.

Though, come to think of it, the bodega serving the PJs on 5th is busy as well. I think there's always room for more pizzerias in JC, as supported by the very existence of them. They are a perfect visual representation of the supply/demand curve. I think someone who knows what they're doing for New York style pizza could just come in and become successful with minimal changes. The styling, signage, and name are corny AF.

One is left to wonder if EasyGibson and GrovePath have ever been to Dullboy or Orale, or in the general vicinity, on any evening, as their posts lack any sort of basis on reality. As JcDevil points out, these two businesses are always well patronized. Heck, even the cigar shop seems to pull in a good amount of customers with a crew of regulars that can often be found there lounging outside enjoying a smoke and some friendly banter. As for Alex, I hear the pizza is decent enough, but every single person I know that has dined there (and not ordered pizza) has told me it is awful. For pizza, I have become a fan of Abbondanza: great crust, good ingredients, and cheap if ordering for takeout/delivery.

unless they fixed the awful from their first month or so, they remind me of your average neighborhood spot 25 years ago. they existed then because they were the only place around and a lot of people hadn't tasted what good food was. kind of like helen's.
i tried them twice and was thoroughly unimpressed on both a slice and a chicken parm. i have a groupon deal for a big dinner i got for a five spot that expires in a month and change, so i'll be giving them one last shot in the upcoming weeks, but the expectations are very, very low.

I don't get that hate. If I don't want a coal oven / fresh mozz style pizza like Rustique, I tend to order from Alex's. Their sauteed Rabe is good as well. Haven't gone into the rest of their food, though, but it seems like a standard, solid pizza place to me.

This is all such an asinine argument. Dullboy is busy most weekdays and packed most weekends. Orale is also packed most days. The only reason the other restaurants on that block aren't crowded is because they're takeout/delivery places.

You do you, but I'll pass on the liquor license/lease that's dependent on courting the wanderer demographic.

How many times do you think people can walk up and down Newark Ave?? It's not such a fantastic destination that people won't end up wandering around two blocks from it on Grove street.

There's certainly foot traffic, but there's nowhere close to what Newark gets.
Additionally, commerce ends at 1st St. There's nothing up Grove business wise until... well actually I guess there's nothing up Grove. Period.

I think bodhipooh was pointing out how no one would notice from the street and even if they did how would that possibley be a deal breaker for someone who owns a business on that block? "Oh no I just realized fires are contagious-better shut down!"
