Thanks! That's really good to know! Usually I have to head to Mulligan's in Hoboken. Nice to have a walkable option!

I'm hoping their Tapas and Sangria is better than Raval's. The food there has definitely deteriorated and the sangria tastes like cough syrup.

After four years of waiting for this place to open, let's hope you are right! But, remember this: two and a half years ago, the place's opening was imminent and they were accepting resumes for their various staff positions. :o

with Rainbow allegedly opening as a Sports Bar, I bet "Atlas" changes its mind again (because lord knows Rainbow will open first).

All this talk of what it could possibly be is somewhat funny given that the place could have been something for quite a few years now.
At this point, I don't believe this place will ever exist...until it does.

The problem with Raval is that the menu is limited and boring. The original menu was at least a bit less limited (still boring) but overpriced. If you don't like paella, it seems tough to have a full meal there. I see no barrier to a tapas place that actually has a full tapas menu with some interesting dishes succeeding in the area.

Then you should go to Barcade when you'd like a Sandwich and a beer. However, if somebody would like to eat Tapas then a Sandwich and a beer for $10 is not really relevant, is it?

I can't see a trendy tapas place succeeding there. A sports bar would have done well.
With as long as it's taken them to get this place open, I'm sure the cost has been high, the demand for a tapas place will not pay the bills. They'll never hit the black.

Try the "Any 3 Tapas + Drink" at Raval. I never tried Raval until about a month ago, I just was never that interested. For $25, it's definitely a good deal and their tapas plates are HUGE compared to other places I've been to.

Sports bar would have been a much better bet than tapas IMO.
Does anybody ever actually want a tapas place? I've always thought of them as something I suffer through when friends want to go out for an "occasion". Oh cool, tapas. An annoying $500 split check where nobody gets a full meal, and nobody(staff included) ever remembers what you ordered. Sweet. Hope the sangria is good at least.

Actually, looks like they changed their entire theme. No longer a sports bar but now a Spanish "tapas" restaurant according to the current info posted on harri.com and other "google" sources. Not sure whether they considered their competition down the road. Hope I'm wrong but don't have terribly high expectations that this place will ultimately succeed. Just a feeling.

it's possible they renamed it because it could be confused with Monty Hall on Montgomery St.?

My guess is a new owner purchased the lease and "business." Nothing about the fit out makes sense based on the information previously relayed, i.e., trust fund beneficiary, etc. If that were the case, one can reasonably assume the necessary upfront capital would have been invested into the business to get it operational a long long time ago.

Maybe they switched away from "Monty's" because of the Monty Hall WFMU performance venue?

From a marketing standpoint, it probably makes sense that they rebrand. Monty's is essentially a failed brand, it never got its feet off the ground, and it put itself out there to be judged and critiqued. To unveil your business to the public and to "Est. 2013" on your facade was just bad business planning.
Now, ATLAS, the god of endurance with the weight of the world on his shoulders ? is a fitting name for a brand that has been nearly 3+ years in the making.

As you point, based on how this place was originally billed, opening in time for the NFL season is not something I would have envisioned as a priority. But, I would be super glad to see the place finally open. That boarded up mess has been an eyesore for far too long.

I took a look in today and it does seem like quite a bit has been done recently. The bar is complete and it looks like most of the seating/booths have been constructed/upholstered. Lighting fixtures are in. They might actually open in time for the NFL season.
That being said, it didn't look like the fits and finishes were as high end as originally intended when Monty's was billed as sort of a throwback, swank gentlemen's club (not the stripper kind)..

Sure... a lot closer than any of use think. I don't know, dude. I have peeked through the holes in the wooden fence and it sure doesn't look all that close. It is very much like a construction zone in there, and even if they were to miraculously finish the construction and build out in the next several weeks (or, months) you still have the matter of inspections and getting approved for opening to the public. At this point, I don't think we will see this place open until at least 2017, and wouldn't be surprised if it goes even longer. Really, we should start a pool for betting on which place will open first: Monty's/Atlas or White Eagle Hall.

I don't know what bar you were looking at, but it looked pretty darn done to me. They're closer than you think. I don't understand why they're trying to rebrand as Atlas. You know damn well everybody around here is calling it Monty's. It's Monty's.

Found a construction video from April - great to see the old Hudson Camera sign in there, but otherwise nothing special considering the years that have passed.

Minor Monty's update. So a couple of small changes that I noticed this morning en route to the PATH since it was one of the VERY rare days when there was work ongoing.
They have installed some nice looking faux gas lamps out front above the entrance, but the inside looks like it has barely progressed in the past year. The wooden bar frame is in place, but no frontage or bartop. Was pretty dim inside, so couldn't see much else, but the place looked gloomy - didn't look like the light fixtures have been installed. There is now a sign on the outside of the wooden barrier facing the street that reads "ATLAS". A new name perhaps? It struck me that AT LAST might be more appropriate...

One would think that city hall would green light any new restaurants and such sowing into Newark Avenue ~ as others have stated here, many of the establishments are boarded up eyesores that languish in the quicksand that has defined restaurant openings here for as long as anyone can remember.
We did a gut/rehab residential project in 2007 and it was nothing but red tape ~ inspectors failing to show up on appointed dates that they had set, the historian was somewhat bipolar, etc. It's so hard to do business in this town and probably discourages business owners from undertaking the tasks involved.
