On the bright side, some slick developer is going to be able to cram a whole lotta units in there!

This was a real bummer to see today even though I knew it was coming for years now.

RIP Mullins building.

The building is being demolished, that's what's happening there.

Going all the way back to the fire, this whole thing is so shady.

Agreed. This whole thing was shady and, despite what the owners state in the article (that they were two weeks away from opening when the excavation mishaps took place) the rumors are that the partners had been locked in a dispute/disagreement and that had held up their opening back for business.

In any case, it is a shame that a building with such character is being brought down.

That's a real shame. That is one of the only old school remnants from the heyday of Newark Avenue left on the south side of the street. In fact, it is THE last of those beautiful old edifices, as you can see here.

It would have been great if they had been able to save it. It's the only building with a shred of character left on that block. And all because of some asshat torched the building next door.

Such a waste.

Heard or read a rumor that the owners of Hard Grove were taking the space of the ground floor at 328 Montgomery Street

Back when the Newark Ave. building was initially structurally compromised they had plans for a "Plan B" location. It was a bit west, I forget if it was on Newark or Montgomery..... But that was close to 2 years ago. I can't imagine that they wouldn't have done something by now if those plans were really going to materialize.

Maybe someone from Hard Grove will reply to this thread...but otherwise I would not hold my breath that they'll ever reopen.

I don't have any inside info, but somebody on here said it wasn't likely to open, and instead, the Hard Grove owners were opening a new spot on Montgomery Street.

Wow a PNC bank on the corner of Grove and Columbus would be a tragic use of that space. I really hope that's not true.

Is Hard Grove going to be using a Columbus facing storefront or is that "Coming Soon" sign just on Columbus for advertising and it will actually open on Newark? Would love to see places opening to face CC.

yuck. i prefer the pnc bank exactly where it is. out of sight. why does pnc need a high profile location when it has such a small footprint in the area.

I heard Hard Grove and the adjacent florist were going to be a PNC Bank. Very bland uninspired if you ask me but I guess they can pay the rent.

I think Porta Pizza is going in at 135 Newark, the location next to Two Boots.

Couple of points...

1. I thought 143 Newark Ave is where Porta Pizza is going?

2. I wonder why they would move?

3. I hope the new tenant at the current Hard Grove location does something to enhance the building. Probably one of the drabbest buildings downtown, and one of the first things people see when exiting Path at Grove St.

I spotted a banner mentioning that 143 Newark Avenue will be the new home of Hard Grove Cafe.

Any word as to when they are changing locations?

Or, more importantly, any word on what is moving into their current spot at 319 Grove Street?

The service at Hard Grove Cafe has definitely declined the past few years. I recently went there on a weekday evening and waited and waited to be served and wound up leaving. I can't imagine what the service is like during weekends. The food use to be awesome too. I will wait another day to try again.

I recently had brunch at the Hard Grove with 7 friends. It was an unintentional three-hour brunch! We sort of didn't mind because we like each other, but it was also kind of ridiculous. The food is not bad, but it's also not amazing. And definitely not worth the long, long wait.

Hubby and I stopped by a couple weeks ago on a nice, sunny day and asked if we can sit outside. They told us, sure. We proceeded to sit and wait outside for service for at least half an hour. No one came out to greet us with water or menus. We finally decided to just get up and leave. The staff was definitely indifferent. Perhaps they thought we were asking them if we can just sit down to rest? It was definitely a baffling experience.

Hard Grove has the worst service I've ever experienced at a restaurant. Went once and will never go back.

The food at Hard Grove is decent enough but am I the only one who thinks this place is overpriced? It's certainly no better than any number of Cuban places in Manhattan that are priced about 20-25% less and it's fairly shabby decor-wise. I wouldn't have a problem with the prices if they spruced the place up a bit but right now they have upscale prices for a casual restaurant. It's one of the first places people see when exiting the PATH so it would be nice if they at least got the awnings that came down during Sandy replaced.

Oh, and they do a terrible job keeping their dumpster area clean. There's usually some sort of rancid liquid spilling out onto the sidewalk.

I agree that service is slow and that they should hire more people when i've gone, but i must admit that service can be slow at other JC/NYC restaurants during peak times. I'm ok as long as the food is decent, and i've always been happy with the food at hard grove
