I guess I hold this stuff to a different "fast food" standard, just like I don't expect a bowl of Sbarro meat balls & spaghetti to be like Laico's, but sometimes it's the best I can do in an airport. Yes, it's essentially a bowl of pasta in soup with a few scraps of pork and lumps of ground mystery meat. For $1.75. Tasty, filling, and cheaper than most slices around here. The only thing around here for $2 that touches it is Nicole's curry or jerk chicken patties.

Before 1970, the won ton skin was thick in Chinatown too. Then, a new influx of people from Hong Kong brought new recipes to New York.
If you buy won ton skin at the markets, they are not thin.

For some of the best Dominican/Spanish food that's real cheap, there's El Sol Del Caribe at Sterling Ave. They have a small order of either stew, bbq, or roasted chicken with any kind of rice for $3.

Thanks Brewster. I'll try it next time. When we were kids, we used to get won ton soup in Chinatown for 50 cents. It would be a meal. There were maybe 8 or more won tons in it, some roast pork, garnished with scallion, and a dash of sesame oil. Yummy.

The $14 ramen thread made me want to give a shout out to Goody won-ton soup, one of the best deals around I picked up again the other day when I was feeling like comfort food. Pint of tasty soup with 5 huge wontons:$1.75. Seriously, by volume there was far less soup than wonton, I might ask them to leave one out next time! At home doctored it with some fish sauce and sriracha.

Rosa Restaurant and Deli - formerly Le Deli - on the northeast corner of 7th and Monmouth attached to the musicbox. Best lunch deal downtown and seriously delicious grandma food. Rice, beans, chicken, pork, platanos, good and cheap.

I haven't been back to Delenio's since they served me a tiny slice, and when I complained said "better luck next time". There was no next time, Carmine's is a block away and their meat lover's sicilian is pretty decent.

Communipaw almost down by West Side Ave - killer West Indian Chicken Roti for $7 that is rather tasty and very filling, ask for the scotch bonnet hot sauce if you can hack it.
The Dominican spot on Grove across from Ibby has a nice daily spread as do some of the waitresses.

Two roast pork buns from the Asian Market on 440 will be less than $2.00. I think the only ones available by the piece are the baked ones, not the steamed. They also have a steam table with several selections, but I've never tried any of it. I think you can get two bbq quail for $5.00, for a change of pace or 1/2 pound of bbq pork for $4.00. I believe there are a few tables between the two sets of doors.

Was that El Chilango? I tried their fish tacos at Grove Plaza. It was a couple of pieces of fish and iceberg lettuce. Never again.

Made the mistake of trying the mexi truck in Riverview park for lunch today. Ordered the 3 tacos for $7, rarely have I paid so much for so little outside of a trendy sit down. 3 skinny soft tacos with some meat, onions and sliced radish. About what I would consider an appetizer plate. 2 blocks up Palisade at Mission Burritos you can get 2 overstuffed double tortilla tacos for $6, an entire plate of food with great pico de gallo. A few storefronts further is Alma Latina, $1 empanadas and full plates of meat rice & beans for $6. Plus he makes terrific fresh green chile sauce. These guys have nothing to fear from this lameass food truck.

El Sazon De Las Americas is seriously the best deal for food around, you can get a huge breakfast for a few bucks. Cheap empanadas too. At lunchtime, the two Indian buffets on Grove St are a great deal. $7 for all you can eat greasy Indian food and cheap samosas. Paratha Junction in Little India is another good place for Indian food on a budget.
John Soup cart on Columbus at Exchange place is good cheap lunch. $6 for a big helping of chicken or chicken chili and rice, and he has good soup for $3-5 too. Crab/Lobster bisque is slammin and the clam chowder is good too. Another guy across the road on Columbus I call Pita Boss, he does chicken and rice for the same price with some more spices. You can also ask for chopped pita which he douses in sauce and fries up and is awesome with chicken or lamb. Gypsy Grill deserves a shoutout too for their falafel and shwarma sandwiches. Hawawshi on the weekend is great too.

The bodegas on 4th and Manila and 5th and Erie still have cheap (under $5) sandwiches on rolls - round or hero. NY Bagel on 1st and Newark has an actual 1/2 lb burger (ground beef, not a patty) for $4.50 including toppings. Not a great burger, but good value.

If you have a chance, check out the brown sauce at Lucky Star. I like it better than downtown. It's not thick and gooey.
Chicken and broccoli lunch is $5.85 + tax. They have brown rice. I used to think buyrite is the cheapest but its not. If you are ever in River Edge, Total Wine is cheaper. That said, i still go to buyrite since its more convenient.
