They will as JSQ has the available sq footage and the waterfront does not.

Whole Foods needs a showplace local in the hot new hip city Jersey City has become, the yups can ride PATH for the hot buffet and cinnamon scented pad liners.

Trader Joe's is for rebranded pussies.

There are several parking garages dotted around the area but you are going to pay premium prices.

Driving into the city for whole Foods is nuts. You are better off taking the path and walking.

When I first became a Greenvillian I would drive to the Trader Joes in Brooklyn.. OMG that lasted for about a month and got old fast. We would have to park at least 8 blocks away from the store just to find parking. I think Supermarkets like this in New Jersey will only work with parking.
in the not too distant future, you can go to hoboken for tj

Isn't there one in Edgewater?

It's just a "hook" to get you to look at the property and get you in the door to the sales office. Remember the developer who put a sign on his fence that said " Future Home of Whole Foods" on the property he was developing?

I call BS. If WF is planning a JC store, they would deny until they're ready to present to the public. They're not going to be upstaged by some guy on facebook.

Besides, the developer building those two towers on the long vacant lot at Journal Square is actually paying WF to occupy the retail at the base of the tower so they can better market their luxury rentals and command higher rents, or so the rumour goes...

None of this is true, it is rumor and speculation until we see the press release from WF corporate.

You only have to pay a lot of money if you are staying more than 4 or 5 hours. A two hour stay is a little over two dollars, and you can get a discount by showing an ID with a JC address at the Customer Service desk in the middle of the mall (next to elevator bank).

I'm told the WF in Paramus is inside a mall.

Morton Williams validates parking. WF might do the same though parking is only expensive for long stays to discourage commuters.

the parking fees are in reality negligible, the rates are

1 Hour $ 2.00
2 Hours $ 2.25
3 Hours $ 3.50
4 Hours $ 5.50

showing your ID with a Jersey City address lowers it by $1.

I feel extremely skeptical of this claim.

That space is not nearly as big as some people seem to think it is... It totals about 14,000 sf. Good luck trying to fit a "big grocery retailer" into a space of that size. The average WF is 50,000 to 70,000 sf. The upcoming BK Wegmans weighs in at 74,000 sf, and that's already one third smaller than their average store. In fact, the average grocery store takes up about 50,000 sf. The only viable store that could fit into that space would be a TJ. Their average store is about 12,000 sf.

Why is there so little love and yearning for a Fairway, a store with urban origins, and an understanding of city shopping? I loved the one on 133rd. Is it so few people here have shopped at one, or didn't like it? The Paramus one had far more "center aisle" canned and dry goods than the Harlem store which was more focused on perishables.

I would take Fairway over anything else.

That may be OK for a specialty goods place like TJ's, but some of us don't work in Manhattan, nor shop so small that we would want to carry it that far. Same goes for WF, no?

Agreed. I only mentioned that location because I have found that many people don't seem to know/realize that a Fairway is located there. That makes sense, since it only opened about two years ago.

I think you may have mentioned this before. Fairway is nice, but I never felt they had good prices (in fact, I find their prices to be on par with WF in many items) but they do have urban origins and they know how to stock a store with a small footprint with all the necessities. I have always found their produce to be great, as well. I doubt they will expand into JC... Their location on 6th and 25th is a short PATH ride away.

Another piece of the yard, at Flushing Avenue and Navy Street, will be carved out for a 74,000-square-foot Wegmans supermarket, in an area known as Admiral?s Row, which is lined with sagging 19th-century houses overgrown with vines. Most of the decrepit houses will be razed, despite efforts to preserve them, and in the process graffiti-marked walls barricading this corner will also come down.

The above paragraph was taken from an article in the NYT about the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Maybe Wegman's is seeking urban locations.

A little late to the party with this tidbit. The supermarket Wegmans is opening at the Brooklyn Navy Yard is anything but urban style. For starters, it is HUGE, and not too far off from the typical size they build. Secondly, they placed it in an area that will require you to drive out there, and a fairly large sized parking lot is part of the overall project. Wegmans has looked into potentially building smaller stores to go into urban areas, but it just doesn't fit their style and overall strategy. In short, you will never see a Wegmans in JC. We just don't have the space required for the place they would want to build.
