The comment "we're going to be the majority soon," reminds me of the comment the late John Paul 2 made. He told the Italians a long time ago that their 1 child birth rate and the new Muslims immigrants birth rate of 7 children that the beautiful churches in Italy will one day be Mosques.

So? There are several other days of the week, last I heard. Surely something can be worked out. What would keep that from happening is if every sect wants to fight to the death for EVERY holiday. I believe there are some 2000 Catholic Saints, each with a feast day, that would surely sink the boat? I'll admit some Jewish holidays are FAR more important than others. A meeting on a night of Chanukah? No problem by me. But Yom Kippur is THE biggie if you had to pick. That's why the Arabs picked it, as a day to start a war.

Well, several years ago, the city changed the budget hearing to Thursday due to the Jewish holiday, but that Thursday was Holy Thursday. Mr. Byrne said he didn't want to interfere with a Jewish holiday.

What undoubtedly was ridiculously insensitive was scheduling the McNair curriculum night tonight, on both a major Jewish AND Muslim holiday. Surely there was some other evening this could have been done without the world ending?

The Muslim community got immediate change from the Hudson County Board of Freeholders. Instead of buying property near the county college, the county gave them a room for worship, something I strongly object to. Since the freeholders gave into that, why wouldn't they expect the Board of Ed to make immediate changes. It doesn't matter schools make calendars at least 6 months to a year in advance.

things like this will continue no matter the outcome. next it will be some other religion / faith complaining their laws are not being recognized etc etc. just more reasoning to separate religion from everything outside of a person's personal life.
for instance. come up with an average that could work for everyone. say 15 "special" days off a school / work year. no more no less. anything after that comes as a hit to the students / employees records / grades no favoritism or hand holding, some faiths will come short, some will get free days off. cant please everyone but can try to make it as fair across the board as possible. the more we cater to every special interest the more issues created. i blame this on special interests groups and all those idiotic political PAC'S. I remember reading an article where catholics were mad that non catholics were allowed to take xmas break off and that it wasn't fair because they were not allowed to take days off of other religions and they felt victimized and discriminated against. shenanigans!

I sit on the Board of Ed and wanted to clarify a few things because there has been a lot of misinformation shared with the public about this topic.
1. The District's current policy is to recognize the holy days of every religion by allowing excused absences and tardies for any student who chooses to observe the holiday. 2. As clarification- We do not take any days off for religious holidays with the exception of Good Friday, which has been on our calendar for decades. Christmas falls within Winter Break and Easter is on Sunday. 3. The challenge with this specific holiday, as voiced by many Board Members, is that we would only be giving families 6 days notice for a closed school day. This is extremely difficult for many working families. The City Council and employers are not closed on this day so arranging back up care on the scale of 30,000 students is not easy or affordable for every family. 4. It is illegal for the public schools to gather data on religious affiliation so the actual size of any given community is not known. Many of the other points on this thread about including all religions in decisions to cancel school were also raised. It's clear we need to come up with something that will be inclusive and work for every student. Hope this helps, but ping me if you have questions. Sangeeta

The school board made the right call. These things have to be planned well in advance, you can't close all the schools on a few days notice. Let them plan for this closure next year, for now they can do whatever they did in prior years.

Who cares about school, you know your minority has really arrived when you can get parking rules suspended!
Seriously, a day of school missed is not the end of the world, my kids missed Monday for Rosh Hashanah. We don't expect the world to stop turning. I think NYC set the precedent for Jewish holiday closings decades ago because half the teachers would be out. To avoid the slippery slope of "but THEY got a day off" there should simply be a threshold percentage. Maybe 1/3. If 1/3 of the kids will be out, you can close the school. Maybe 1/3 of JC public school students are Muslim, but definitely that's at least an order of magnitude more than the number of Jewish kids. This should be about school, not empowerment politics.

The Jersey City Board of Education had originally proposed to close schools next Thursday so that Muslim students could observe the holiday, and the City Council unanimously supported it a week ago. The academic year would have extended one day to June 23, 2016 as a result. But during the nearly four hours of debate at the board meeting Thursday, some of the Jewish faith said they felt they were being discriminated against because they weren't getting their own school days off for holidays like Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. "Many of our Jewish community members are feeling left out," said parent Roy Tomargo. As the debate wore on and it became clear that the school board would not close schools next Thursday, Muslim community members nearly walked out in anger and frustration. "We feel alienated from the Board of Education, we feel alienated from this system," said Omar Abouelkhair. In the original resolution announcing the vote, the board said it was "committed to honoring the great diversity of our district, including our religious diversity," and that it will "continue to engage our communities to explore ways to support its diverse communities and celebrate our many cultures and faiths." Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most important Muslim holidays, along with the holiday of Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan.
