Well, we weren't angry. The place was hopping and we could see they were swamped. We asked to look at the menu for future, thanked the hostess and said we'll just try again another night.

Well maybe they assumed their restaurant was going to be visited by able minded adults who can comprehend that not being seated at vacant tables doesn't mean the hostess personally hates you. When someone uses that as a claim of poor service I immediately stop listening.

well, keeping people waiting with open tables generally won't give you glowing yelp reviews, either.

Wow. None of you have ever worked in a restaurant, huh? It's opening night, they don't want the place to come crashing down and people run to Yelp writing how horrible it is. Give them a break.

I agree about some of the rude hosts, but I want to point out that just because you can see empty tables doesn't mean that they have more capacity. If a chef or a waiter or busboy doesn't show up to work, your capacity drops, even though the number of tables doesn't. So yeah maybe you can sit down, but the service is going to take longer and you'll be even more frustrated, as will everyone else.

We arrived around 6 pm on Friday evening. The hostess had a loong list and we were told it would be two hours. We went to Osteria and had a lovely meal in the courtyard.

Yeah I get they just opened, but give me something, he didn't even give a hint that we could drink at the bar when some people come out.

I'm from Texas and I just wasn't feelin the southern hospitality on my first visit, so it irked me some. But whatever, I guess they just need to train their employees to not turn away business, will try them again next week.

I was at the private event on Wed night. Really nice place inside. It was open bar and kitchen. They had a ton of bartenders working and encouraged everyone to try all the drinks so they could practice. There were servers walking around with tasting plates of all the food. Drink menu is extensive and cocktails are $11 and a few $12. Beers were around $6 on average. Didn't see a food menu but what they were serving was all southern comfort stuff and tasty.

With the gas lamp and hanging ferns outside, I was hoping for a New Orleans thing, but I'll take southwest/mission. Hope the food's good.

I was actually able to step in briefly in South House last Saturday while heading to the Path. The entrance is a stylish spanish patio, the main lounge is a huge (think cavernous) space with exposed bricks and ceiling. They had already installed some furnitures that gave a nice lounge feeling. The guy is from Austin and very welcoming. With the space he has, I would not be surprised if there is some dance ball going on there at time - this is my own readout of the space.

Places that are more bar than restaurant.

Keyhole
Dullboy
LITM
Barcade
Zeppelin Hall
Surf City
Lucky 7
White Star
9th and Coles
Bright side
PJ Ryan's
6th Borough
Pint
Hopscotch

I probably missed a few. Anyway, I think we're doing OK with bars.

I heard that it is very close to opening. I think it's a matter of a couple of weeks. I, too am pleasantly surprised by the amazing facade. I like the look of it without signage, although I'm not sure it will stay that way.

I spoke to a source who works in the industry and was given a tour, and their words were that this place will be "a gamechanger".

Very excited about this place.

I was pleasantly impressed/struck by the facade as I walked past it last Friday. Really nice looking! Add me to the list of those impressed by what's there already.

um, Porta? White Star? (now with a third location.) Dullboy?

I give Restaurant Row three years before it's a collection of "bar first, restaurant second."

Agreed. We seem to be doing good with new bars and lounges coming online. Dullboy is a good example. And, let's not forget that due to existing regulations, liquor licenses are hard to come by unless you apply as a restaurant which also "happens" to be a bar.

I think it will be casual. I think it will be "bar first, restaurant second" which is refreshing and rare in Jersey City. I think live music will be central to what they're doing. I think there is a rooftop element.

Thanks for the info! All of their PR materials had me thinking this would be sort of a Texas roadhouse style place. Rock music, sawdust on the floor, BBQ, etc. Nothing wrong with that at all and I'd have been perfectly happy with it. But now seeing this facade it really looks like they're raising the bar. The sort of Mission Revival/Spanish style really stands out on Newark. If they nail the menu and the vibe (hopefully somewhat casual) this place will be a great addition.

Anyone know what the status is of this place? I walked by yesterday and have to admit I'm very pleasantly surprised by the facade. Nice to see something different from most of the storefronts in the area. Now hopefully they don't muck it up with some gaudy sign.

Is it actually open at this point or are they still working on the inside? Anyone have any idea what the menu looks like yet?

Does anybody know when South House plans on opening? Spoke to the owner in September at the All About Downtown street fair and he had said he was hoping for December (2014). I actually haven't seen much work on the space, so I was wondering if anybody has any idea?

For those who are not familiar, South House is going to be an Austin-style restaurant and bar, with live music.

If he stated December 2015 we wouldn't be counting the minutes.

Seems cool! The Turtle Club is actually one of the nicer spots in Hoboken. This seems like a good fit for our town - Southern food and live music hits a sweet spot for me and the old lady...

I am a little leery knowing that the owner owns several Hoboken bars. But I'll remain hopefully optimistic.

OK, found this on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/SOUTH-H ... =photos_stream&tab=photos

Maybe they'll bring a little Austin influence ... creative BBQ and live rock and roll??

Or maybe it will be a southern-style pizzeria?

The storefront on the south side of Newark Ave near I believe Rainbow and CH Martin has posters on the plywood that read "South House: Simple Southern". I'm not sure if this is referencing what is coming to the space or not, or if it's something irrelevant. Any speculations or inside knowledge? Maybe a southern cuisine/BBQ place??
