Anyone know how the bible thumpers were granted permission to solicit inside the PATH station?

Ummm...I never said the park was owed by the PA, just the area immediately around the station. Newport security has no business there.
The small park by the dog run is owned by the PA. I know this by all the PA signs in the park. They own this land because it is directly above the Holland Tunnel. Quote:

Newport the private developer owns the park surrounding the Newport PATH known as Commuter Park. It is private property subject to rules and this information is posted in the park. I believe the sidewalk surrounding the glass enclosed PATH station is owned by the Port Authority. But the park and the sidewalks through the park are definitely private property. The other small park next to the Newport dog run is owned by the City Of Jersey City. In Newport there are several streets, sidewalks and parking meters that are private property.

Who do you think owns the station? Lefrak? Come on. The PA also owns the "park" next to the dog run by Duane Reade. You can tell since it only gets mowed about once every six months.

This can start a monkey see monkey do effect if they allow anyone to set up camp. Then there could be busking wars stepping on another's turf. Liabilities factor in as well that is why permits are necessary so they can schedule different groups such as the organizations that solicit information at the JSQ PATH station. Or the ethnic and farmer's market events that take place on the JSQ PA property.

Can you provide a link or reference to back up your statement? I am actually curious as to the veracity of the claims chronicled in the article so I would like to hear more on this.

Actually, the area immediately around the Newport PATH station is owned by the Port Authority, not Lefrak. So, Newport security has no authority there. None.

There was an article years ago in the NYTimes on a experiment in the DC subway with Joshua Bell. The purpose was to see whether people would notice beauty while doing routine tasks. Interestingly mostly the children seemed to notice, the rest of the populace walked by without noticing. Bell was playing the Chaconne from Bach though, which I personally think is not super appealing. The point remains though, humans are creature of habits and they are unlikely to notice when they project a routine.

I'm a violinist and the young man plays beautifully. Music does have an uplifting effect on the harried commuter.

And yet that same homeless guy and the "kids" selling candy are still pestering people by the parking garage exit?

If that area is private property (which I had no idea it was), they can require him to leave even if he wasn't considered to be soliciting. They can call what he does loitering and tell him to leave. Sorry but that's the rules of the game. I'm sure the music was great but I'm indifferent about having violin music on my way into the PATH. It's great to hear, but I'll be fine without it.

I think it's funny they say his play was "seemingly to the delight of commuters" but the first picture was the best they could find. Look at how delighted the commuters are!

It's not a quality of life issue for all, only those that enjoy the music. Some do not prefer to hear it. If you like violin music, feel free to listen to some with headphones, but I don't think it's reasonable that one musician should be able to dominate the closed space with only his music. In a public area outside, perhaps it's a different story.

I have empathy for the kid, however without a permit for busking he has left himself open to be 'moved-on' from private and public land.
I also have no doubt this guy would have declared his income to the irs as do other people that rely on gratuities and tips!

Does the Port Authority have a busking program like the MTA? If not, I think they should. I think music on the platform improves QOL. Just like murals and mosiacs do. Distract me from the misery of riding PATH!

They weren't cops, they were security guards... and no, they probably don't have anything better to do!
if this guy was an aggressive panhandler, no one would have an issue with his "removal" He's still a panhandler nonetheless (albeit providing a service for some)....

A couple of days before Christmas that guy was in Grove Street station playing a medley of traditional Christmas carols and it was really awesome.
First of all, it's weird that the area around Newport station is private property and second of all, really? The cops had nothing else better to do I guess.

saying "Violin Playing not permitted in Newport" is a bit misleading... what it should say is something like "Solicitation on Private Property is Discouraged".
Doesn't matter that this kid was playing beautiful music and people liked it. The moment he opened his case for donations, he was soliciting....

Violin playing not permitted in Newport
A Jersey City man was playing the violin beautifully this week at the PATH during the afternoon rush hour seemingly to the delight of commuters; with an open case for donations. Two Newport private security guards informed him that the area around the PATH is private property and and requested that he move on.
