Many of St. Anthony's championship teams were made up of players from Jersey City including the ones that his own son's played on. It's a common sight to see young men from Jersey City proudly wear a St Anthony's varsity basketball jacket. Any parent in the metropolitan area who has a talented son playing hoops would be well served sending their son to Coach Hurley. Bob Hurley is a Jersey City treasure in far more ways than just a basketball coach.

St.Anthony is competiting against HS teams that are built exactly the same way. Max Preps which ranks the best teams in the country is full of exactly the same types of programs. This year's star players Kyle Anderson and Myles Mack were not from JC but transferred their when their school closed (Patterson Catcholic). Recent Star players like Tyshawn Taylor was from Hoboken, Dom Cheek and Mike Rosario were from JC. So while Coach Hurley fields a team not just from JC, at least the players are from the area...or have circumstances that are understandable...unlike teams like Oak Hill Academy with players from around the country. It's silly to act like the teams that St. Anthony schedules and are compared against are "run of the mill" public schools like in the 70's. People that actually follow big time HS basketball understand that this has been the "norm" since the 80's. Even CBA from Lincroft gave out scholarships in 88 when I played. Private Schools have always played by different rules.

Like Bright Moment posted, Coach Hurley makes me proud to be associated with Jersey City. Class Act and congratulations again to the extended St. Anthony family.

Anyone who is a sports fan should purchase "the Street Stops Here" a PBS documentary on the program which benefits the school.

Anyone who follows St. Anthony's program is aware that many of Bob Hurley's players are from outside Jersey City. But you state that "most of those kids are not from Jersey City." Do you know that to be a fact?

Coach Hurley is a super nice friendly guy, met him a couple of times on the street. His record for getting kids to college is excellent. However, let it be known, St Anthony is a training ground for college basketball. That is NOT a HS basketball team, that is a Division 2 College basketball team where he recruits kids from ALL OVER the metropolitan area. Most of those kids are NOT from Jersey City. Very rarely will a public school be able to match parochial schools that focus intensively on recruiting. Public schools are more strict with whom they receive as students in their district. I think there should be a national Public School Champion and Parochial Champion, same as state champions in NJ. They are not and never will be on the same playing level. Unfair in my opinion.

With that out of the way, he has done an excellent job coaching team basketball and preaching education and value.

Compared to where the interviewer from 60 minutes lives, I guess you can call Hamilton Park rundown ( : I hate to see what they think of some parts of Greenville?

All of us in Jersey City are lucky to have Coach Bob Hurley working with these young men who have a caring mentor. Hurley leads by showing that hard work, discipline, execution, team work, and application to academics as well, build a lifetime of self confidence and initiative that may be used in anything they choose to do in life.

Coach Hurley is the best and makes me proud to live here.

I don't think I'd call the neighborhood where St. Anthonys is a run down neighborhood.

A little journalistic license?? I found that funny too.

I wonder what they define as "run down" I see a lot of stereotypical points in this story. First they show Hurley as a truant officer going through some "run down" sections of town, interviewing mothers of these "fatherless" players, then Hurley stating that the school "saved" them. How could you not have a little journalistic license to kill to juice up the story a little bit ? I mean after all it is Jersey City.

Jersey City's Bobby Hurley Sr., welcome to basketball immortality

Published: Saturday, August 14, 2010, 8:02 AM
By JASON REMILLARD
THE SPRINFIELD REPUBLICAN

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - A couple of days ago the reality of Bob Hurley Sr.'s upcoming enshrinement in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame had not yet sunk in.

After making what he called "the dreaded speech" last night, he has no other choice.

Bob Hurley, welcome to immortality.

The longtime coach of St. Anthony High School in Jersey City took his place among the greats of the game at the Hall's 2010 Enshrinement Ceremony at Springfield Symphony Hall. Hurley becomes the second coach - Morgan Wootten being the other - to join the Hall based solely on a high school resume.

Whether Hurley expected it or not, anyone nearing 1,000 career victories is a pretty worthy candidate.

"At the Final Four (where the Class of 2010 was announced in April), I didn't feel comfortable with what was going on," Hurley said yesterday morning at the annual press conference on Center Court at the Hall of Fame. "But being with guys like Scottie Pippen, Karl Malone, Charles Barkley and Chris Mullin - guys that I've spent time with over the last 24 hours - has made me very, very comfortable."

Hurley joined fellow inductees Malone, Pippen, WNBA star Cynthia Cooper, Los Angeles Lakers owner Dr. Jerry Buss, the 1960 and 1992 United States Olympic teams and families of posthumous honorees Dennis Johnson, Gus Johnson and Maciel "Ubiratan" Pereira on the stage for the show, which was hosted by NBA TV's Ahmad Rashad.
The "dreaded speech" wasn't so bad after all. Hurley received several ovations from the audience, especially when mentioning how only two players in his 38 years as varsity coach did not go to college. He told a story of how he's gone from having a sandwich and a beer in the hospitality room after winning his first tournament in 1973 to getting the red-carpet treatment the past two days in Springfield.

"It's hard to fathom, 38 years later, sitting here looking at an audience with the entire basketball community," Hurley said in his speech. "It's overwhelming."

The Hurley family connection continued in the Class of 2010, albeit indirectly. Bobby Hurley Jr., while at Duke University, was a part of the team of collegians that scrimmaged the 1992 "Dream Team." That group even defeated the Olympians in their first meeting.
Bobby Hurley Jr.'s coach with the Blue Devils, Mike Krzyzewski, presented Hurley Sr. for enshrinement. Krzyzewski was an assistant coach for the 1992 USA team. However, on this day, Bobby's focus was on his father's recognition.

"He's done a lot for so many people for so long," Bobby Hurley Jr. said. "It means a lot to our family. We lived it with him. I grew up, as a young kid, around St. Anthony all the time. I'm just happy to see he's being recognized."

With all the events surrounding Enshrinement Week, Hurley did find time for the family. Thursday evening, the Hurleys visited the iconic Red Rose Pizzeria in Springfield to celebrate the seventh birthday of Bobby Hurley III - Bobby Jr.'s son. In about two weeks, Bob and his wife Chris will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary.

In his speech, Hurley shared some family advice he was given by the late, great Hall of Fame coach, John Wooden.

"He said, 'The greatest thing you can do for your children is love their mother,'" Hurley said while introducing his wife, kids and grandkids.
Hurley also was accompanied by his other kids - the St. Anthony Friars. The 13 varsity players, who helped their coach conduct a clinic for Springfield youth on Thursday, were split up in different hotels, but they did manage to run into several Hall of Famers, getting pictures taken and autographs signed.

"Probably the phrase of the decade was Charles Barkley telling my team, 'Make sure you go to school. We've got enough dumb people in
this world,'" Hurley Sr. said. Hurley's first team captain at St. Anthony - Jersey City police inspector Bob Kilduff - was among many former players in attendance.

"The school that I found is a place that is nearly impossible to leave," said Hurley, who has had a few chances to leave St. Anthony for the college ranks.

When Hurley visited the suburban Boston headquarters of Reebok - which has sponsored the Friars for 15 years and given the school more than $100,000 - on Wednesday, the company floored him by announcing the creation of the Bob Hurley Sr. Excellence in Coaching Award. The inaugural honor was given to Cory McCarthy of Boston's New Mission Charter School.

Coach Bobby Hurley deserves all the accolades he receives for not only becoming the greatest High School coach in the US, but by mentoring young men who have gone on to become good citizens and hopefully pass on what they have learned at St. Anthony's.

A fitting honor on Easter. Here's to ya Coach Hurley.

The Times has a piece on it this morning as well:

For a Storied Coach the Ultimate Accolade
By KEVIN ARMSTRONG
NEW YORK TIMES, April 4, 2010

INDIANAPOLIS ? Tom Konchalski, the editor and publisher of High School Basketball Illustrated, called St. Anthony High Coach Bob Hurley in his apartment Thursday to wish him a Happy Easter. Before speaking with Hurley, whom he has known for more than four decades, Konchalski reached his wife, Chris, who informed him that Bob would be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on Aug. 13.

?What took them so long?? Konchalski said.

Hurley, 62, has coached at St. Anthony, a small Jersey City school, for 38 years, winning 984 games, a national record 25 state titles and 3 mythical national championships. Off the court, he has raised money for the struggling school.

?He?s a stat-sheet stuffer in ways that have nothing to do with X?s and O?s,? the CBS broadcaster Bill Raftery said.

He is celebrating this weekend with family and friends at the Final Four in Indianapolis, the same site where his oldest son, Bobby, won the 1991 national title with Duke. The new hall class includes the 1992 Dream Team members Scottie Pippen and Karl Malone. The official announcement of the 2010 class will be made Monday.

?He?s the best basketball coach in America,? said St. Joseph?s Coach Phil Martelli, who has coached several of Hurley?s players in college.

Hurley?s reputation was built at White Eagle Hall, a tight space where no fouls were called and players learned to navigate radiators, an overhanging balcony and dead spots in the court. Hurley ? whose profile has risen in recent years after the publication of ?The Miracle of St. Anthony,? which chronicled a year with his team, and the showing of the documentary ?The Street Stops Here? on PBS ? still sweeps the floor before games and practices.

?Sitting next to him is priceless,? said Ben Gamble, a corrections officer who played for Hurley, and has been his assistant for 10 seasons. ?He?s the only one who can talk to a kid on the bench and not miss a thing on the floor in a game.?

Recently retired from his longtime job as a probation officer and then director of recreation in Jersey City, his hometown, Hurley spends most of his mornings watching his 11-month-old grandson, Gabriel.

But the honor of having his place in the hall also has special meaning to Hurley.

?When he called to say he got in, I could tell it was a weight off his shoulders,? Gamble said.

HURLEY HEADED TO HALL
St. Anthony legend to receive game's highest honor
Saturday, April 03, 2010
By STEVE POLITI
STAR-LEDGER STAFF

INDIANAPOLIS - Bob Hurley Sr. never left tiny St. Anthony High School in Jersey City during a lifetime coaching basketball. But now, his storied career will end someplace else.

In the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Hurley will be inducted Aug. 13 along with 1992 Dream Team members Scottie Pippen and Karl Malone, a person close to the coach confirmed last night. The person did not want to be identified because the official announcement won't take place until a news conference Monday.

Hurley, who is 16 victories shy of reaching 1,000 in his 38-year career, will become the third boys high school coach enshrined in Springfield, Mass., joining the late Ernest Blood of Passaic and Morgan Wootten, formerly of DeMatha Catholic in Hyattsville, Md.

His teams, known for their discipline on offense and tenacity on defense, have won 24 state titles and nine Tournament of Champions titles despite not having a gymnasium at the school.

Hurley will see his career accomplishments placed with coaching legends like John Wooden, Mike Krzyzewski and Dean Smith, and will stand alongside superstars Malone and Pippen just one year after Rutgers women's coach C. Vivian Stringer was enshrined.

"Long time coming," said Terry Dehere, one of his best former players at St. Anthony. "His record speaks for itself."

But, Dehere said, that record tells only part of his story. Hurley's presence on the bench has not only helped keep the doors open to the school, but has impacted hundreds of young people in the city.

The former Hudson County probation officer has acted as a father figure to many of the teenagers he coaches, providing the stability and discipline they often have missed at home.

Some of the names he has coached are well known, from his son Bobby, the former Duke star, to former NBA player Rodrick Rhodes. But others, who didn't play organized basketball beyond high school, have gone on to become doctors, police officers and businessmen.

"He had a direct effect on a lot of young men's lives growing up in Jersey City," said Dehere, who is a member of the Jersey City Board of Education. "To have a coach who was dedicated and a taskmaster helped a lot of kids - and I'm a living testament to it."

The news comes for Hurley, who was in Indianapolis last night but could not be reached for comment, after the coach had fallen short of the votes needed for enshrinement the three previous times he had been a finalist.

And it comes during a busy spring for the 62-year-old coach. His 2007-08 team, which went 32-0, was featured in the documentary The Street Stops Here which aired nationally on PBS this week.

"Bob Hurley is a Hall of Famer - period," North Carolina coach Roy Williams told The Star-Ledger after Hurley missed out last spring. "It's going to happen. It's just a matter of when."

The when is now official: Aug. 13 in Springfield, Mass.
