Yeah and it looks like they may have a liquor license as well.

There are big doings at The Dopeness in Jersey City next week.

The show on Friday, April 10 will feature four well-known, popular Hudson County bands.

Resized Image

Each of the bands will play an hour-long set: kicking off with Drum and a Tantrum at 8 p.m., followed by The Fave, Karyn Kuhl Band and finally DEVI taking the stage at 11 p.m.

DEVI will open their set by performing their new single "Butterfly" from their upcoming EP "Every Story Has A Song."

The Downtown JC club got a makeover earlier this year. Among the new digs is a 13 by 7 feet stage that is 20 inches off the ground, making it more suitable for live performances.

Parker Diaz's parents have heard a lot of words to describe little Parker since he was born eight months ago -- beautiful, amazing, perfect, blessed.

Then came a description they never thought they'd hear: cancer patient.

Since January the 8-month-old has been fighting for his life in a Newark hospital after he was diagnosed with leukemia.

"He was refusing to eat and he was crying excessively," parents Richard Diaz and Shante Matthews said on a GoFundMe.com page, which was set up to help the family pay mounting medical bills. "We then decided to take his temperature, which revealed he had a very high fever."

A bake sale will be held Saturday, March 14, at The Dopeness, 332 Second St., in Downtown Jersey City as another way to help raise funds for Parker.

Parker's parents, Jersey City natives now living in Roselle, took him to see several pediatricians and specialists, but all said he either had a cold or it was just allergies. Then one night, Diaz and Matthews took him to the emergency room because he again was refusing to eat.

Parker's parents were looking for answers, but not this one. Doctors in the ER ran blood work and found that Parker had leukemia, as well as Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), a respiratory infection.

Yes, I am excited. Aren?t you excited? Does this take away some of the sting of the closure of the Lamp Post? It ought to. I liked the Lamp Post too, but if this works out and becomes what it promises to become, it?s going to be the best option for local shows in Downtown Jersey City since the closure of Uncle Joe?s. And go on and hang me for heresy as I insist that Uncle Joe?s was never any better than this.

On Saturday night The Dopeness was boisterous and crowded, which is nice, if not particularly important in the long run. What matters most is that the music was consistently good. A promised celebratory open bar didn?t materialize ? blame a hold-up with the license that The Dopeness insists it?ll resolve by the spring ? but the room was packed anyway. It was BYOB, and party people certainly did ?B? their own ?B?; should the license continue to be an issue, I bet folks will keep showing up. Lord knows there are more than enough places in town to drink and far too few to rock. Here?s the good omen for local music fans: a place isn?t going to build a foot-high elevated stage in its back room unless it intends to use it often. At worst, The Dopeness ought to provide a nifty complement to the reliable Lucky 7 Tavern ? maybe 100 feet down Second Street ? and preserve a tight little rock and roll neighborhood at the western fringe of Harsimus Cove. At best, we?ve just come up with our own homegrown version of Pianos or Trash Bar. When the space got really jammed (for JC locals Japanda), The Dopeness took on the communal feel of Death By Audio. A less-grungy Death By Audio, mind you.

I dug the carpeting on the floor of the stage and the white cake shop-style Christmas lights strung over the ceiling of the back room. I dug that the sets were kept to a reasonable length ? maybe 30 minutes each, which is more than enough time for a local band to get its point across. I liked the large rectangle cut out of the back wall of the stage, which probably wasn?t designed so that people waiting in line for the bathroom could take pictures of the drummer?s back, but boy is it going to be used like that. I liked the separation between the place to dance and the place to get food and/or drinks ? a distinction that I believe all serious clubs need to draw. I especially liked that the sound system included three monitors. That sounds like a simple thing to provide, but it has never been a given in Hudson County.

very cool. Looking forward to this.

You wont be disappointed, I started my evening last weekend at Mojo's for their live show and Ubered my way down there and had an awesome time. I know a lot of haters are here, but IMO its one of the better spots dtjc. Cool and original.

They changed the menu, there will still be tacos but also what seems like comfort food/creative junk food (bacon wrapped hot dogs, chicken breaded with cinnamon toast crunch). Not dissimilar to the Lucky 7s menu - bar food with a twist that hits the spot when you get the drunken munchies (or any kind of munchies). I didn't try anything but it looks interesting.

Wonderful. Guess I will very rarely be able to sleep with my window open now (come nicer weather of course).

This is my only problem with them, and it only really causes an issue in the summer when folks feel the need to congregate in their "backyard" space and drunk talk until late (1-2am).

I think it's a REALLY good move for them to focus on live music esp. with lamp post closing and White Eagle sounding more and more like a pipe dream.

For those who don't get the hype...Scanlon has been part of the JC scene for a while. He's pretty well connected within the arts scene (hence why they have $$$ worth of Piersanti art on their walls). He has definitely been trying to cultivate more of a community arts space than a traditional restaurant. It looks like now they're trying to up their game in terms of both the restaurant and music/culture aspect.

I agree. I've been there twice and enjoyed it each time. It is a place you need to be in the mood for. I'd say having a group of people, bringing your own and then ordering some food... almost the equivalent of people over your place and ordering in.

I don't remember the space looking terrible, in fact I thought it had some charm, especially with the vintage sofas which are now apparently gone according to that article.

Granted I never went in, but I remember the owner encouraging me to glance in from the threshold while they were working on it a few years ago and I thought it looked like a cool space.

The place seems to be outfitted for a bar, so it'd probably be a good move to try to get a liquor license. I can't imagine how they are making much money without one, because they can't possibly be moving that much food in there.

Personally I think the name of the place is causing it more harm than good, but maybe I'm just an old 30-something and outside of their target demographic anyway, LOL.

This is definitely more of a late night place. I went around 7 once for taco tuesday ($2 tacos, i think?) and it seemed like they were just opening up.

I think the food is fine considering the prices. And it's byo so it can be a super cheap night out. AND the guys who work there are incredibly nice.

Come in if you're dope.

I live right near the place. They have had guacamole in the past - meh. Not that great. But I will give the poetry night a chance another time.

Yeah, I'm sure they serve it, but not the night I was there. Which is kind of weird mid-week in a mexican restaurant. It wasn't busy, in fact my husband and I were the only ones eating.
Still, I can see they are trying to do something different and I wish them well. If I go back it won't be for the food.
