After the fall of the USSR, and the agricultural subsidies / direct gifts provided, the calorie intake of the average Cuban fell something like 25-30%.

I used to listen to Radio Havana Cuba (RHC) all the time on shortwave radio in high school and college. I remember the tropical-type theme music that played and its slogan "Radio Havana Cuba, broadcasting from Cuba, first free territory in the Americas" (whatever that meant). I have to say, RHC had its share of propaganda I won't get into right now but it also played a lot of Cuban jazz that was pretty entertaining to listen to.

Once in a while on RHC there would be "advertisements" for Cubana, the national airline of Cuba. Something that always amused me was that these advertisements happily touted "reasonably priced Economy Class" and "Business Class with top-flight Cuban hospitality." Okay, isn't having two classes on an airline in a country that proclaims itself as a socialist paradise somewhat hypocritical and go against everything that socialism preaches? It just doesn't make sense.

Anyway, maybe now we can easily buy those oh-so-special Cuban cigars that so many people lust after (I'm told Dominicans are just as good and better, and always 100% legal).

Boris, pre-castro Cuba was the poster child for the kind of corruption and income inequality that drove a number of other US supported nations into the the arms of the "Marxists". Had the US not been so ardent at supporting dictators, AKA "our bastards", throughout the Americas in the name of Liberty, perhaps some of those nations would have been more open to US style democracy and capitalism. From their POV capitalism=kleptocracy, just as it does now through much of Africa, and increasingly here at home.

This is NOT a defence of the Castro regime and it's human rights abuses. Without detailing individual cases, any nation that won't let people vote with their feet is despotic. But there's a whole lot of history to this story. If we can normalize with China, Vietman and the USSR, we can do it with Cuba.

Not the same thing genius. If you had escaped the Nazis and had the ability to go back and fight then I hope you would. A large percentage of Cubans in Miami are whiners and do nothings. Their best effort was when they kidnapped Elian Gonzalez and kept him from his father.

Looks like the Obama administration's negotation skills are improving!!!

Let's see, earlier we gave up 5 terrorists for 1 deserter.

Now, we are only giving up 3 spies for 1 prisoner.

Great job!

There are a people that do a lot of traveling to follow USA around for soccer games. A few years back they had a game in Cuba. As such, there were few that made the trek. It wasn't easy as bribes did need to happen and passports needed to not be stamped, but they had a blast. They said the people were courteous and just wanted to have a good time. Nobody talked politics. Despite showing up to the game in USA gear and carrying American flags, they were not bothered by police or fanatics in the street.

I was not one of those that took the trip, but I would certainly like to do it in the future.

Actually, I always saw the Cuban emigres as more analogous to the Arabs who fought Israel. There was a war, they lost, and for generations they insist on undoing something that wont be undone.

Does anyone else see Cuba trying to make Cuban baseball into a Billion dollar industry? The Cuban baseball league may be on par with MLB, but the players do not make nearly as much money. Over the years many players have defected and have signed very lucrative contracts.

My question is would the cuban league sign these players over to MLB and have MLB teams pay huge posting fees to sign them and pocket most of the money?

China is a great example. We got over it with them, when the thing to get over was an actual war only 20 years earlier, that never even ended! (For you non-history reading or MASH watching types, we fought the Chinese in the Korean war, and that war has technically never actually concluded, it's just had a 60 year ceasefire.)

The Cuban thing has a life of it's own due to the political machines of the emigres, similar to the Taiwanese. But we told the Taiwanese to get over it too.

It's all about maintaining influence for Menendez... he should be more worried about being connected to the Ecuadorian 1% family living in exile after they looted $400 million from the banks. Apparently nice donations to the democrat party is protecting that family of thieves and it looks like he is getting his taste too.

As Obama said, this has been going on our entire lifetimes (I'm his age). It's time to let go of our annoyance at having our corrupt dictator overthrown. He was not the 1st and far from the last, but we've kept this peeve going a ridiculously long time. We weren't great friends of the common Cuban people back then, maybe we can be better ones this time.

My point was to why the people of Cuba haven't risen up against the government. If you read earlier, I said I wasn't really opposed to this program.

cuba is no where near as isolated as north korea....in fact, many cubans travel and many foreignors visit cuba. whenever i have met cubans overseas, they did not seem particularly interested in getting to america or getting rid of castro. take ur propaganda someplace else

That would be nice now wouldn't it? Perhaps the CIA can pay her a visit or something.

let cubans solve their own problems...dictator or not...plus, i don't believe that castro could have survived for so long if the people were so opposed to the castro brothers....maybe most cubans are apathetic

I'm not really opposed to this, but somehow I think that this will prolong the misery of the Cuban people. Right now the government is reeling, as oil state support from Venezuela and Russia can only be shrinking. Putting aside entirely the lousy deal, again, that Obama made re:foreign affairs (appeasing Putin over the missile batteries in the former Eastern Block, the awful release of Guantanamo killers for a US deserter) Cuba's in bad shape right now.

Maybe if he'd waited a bit he could've gotten more concessions from the Cuban government for their people in exchange?

i am so excited that obama is improving relations with cuba. now that i can use a credit/debit card in cuba, does that ,mean that it is ok to visit. i believe before americans were prohibited from spending us dollars on the island, but necessarily from visiting.
