There's a lot of overnight work on the Turnpike as well. I guess they have to do it then because it's when there's the least amount of traffic. But yeah, it can get annoying sometimes. My fiancee woke up the other night asking why someone was banging on our door.

Generally the rules are different for a contractor working for you or I than they are for a government entity.

The last time I did anything in regards traveling waves was 20+ years ago back in college. So taking a stab at it: I wonder if elevation has something to do with it. I have a line of buildings and tree between me and the source of the noise. Since downtown is at a much lower elevation, the sound would have more air and less building mass between downtown residents and the source of the noise.

The night work has actually been going on for months now. It looks like they are replacing steel right down to the foundation. I suspect certain parts of this work has to be done at night due to the need to shut down additional lanes of the covered roadway. Doing so during the day would be a traffic nightmare.

I am surprised you can hear it all the way to downtown. I am a lot closer, but with my windows closed the jackhammering is pretty much a muffled noise at this point.

Something to do with the way sound is traveling?

it is a little bonkers how sound travels. I'm near Torico's, and the banging the other night sounded like it was a block away.

This! I was two blocks east of Torico's and it sounded like the noise was happening right around the corner. Super loud last night.

I urge you to go beyond the usual JCList posting and actually contact somebody.

I believe they're also jackhammering on the turnpike extension, which is probably the noise you're hearing.

How do they get away with this? They're working at 139 & Oakland and I can hear it clearly by Coles. I can't imagine how people nearer are sleeping, I thought there were codes preventing this.

Indeed, indeed. Louder than bombs from the third floor of Seventh and B'wick.
