I'm starting to have my doubts with some of the claims on JClist - I took a friends 1998 Ford Clunker Sedan and went over the so called humps at the posted speed sign and didn't bottom out once...and my friends car is a real piece of crap with faulty shock absorbers.
The claim of bottoming out and loosing front spoilers etc is crap as all cars can clear a 90 degree curb without a slope to them and all the humps are sloped. Speed and cars with faulty or poor suspension appears to be the main problem here.

Don't know if you've noticed, but the people in this city don't stop for speed BUMPs. In fact, they continue to drive 30-40 over them, therefore that's pretty useless. I love the speed humps. Slow the F down, idiots.

I think this German guy came up with pretty good idea. It?s a speed bump that doesn?t harm the bottom of cars. That was just FANTASTIC.

Looks like they "clearly marked" this one with a couple arrows.
Y'all just need to slow down and pay more attention to the road!

I hit the new one on St. Pauls ave yesterday just east of Kennedy Blvd. I MAY have been going 15mph and it ripped half the bumper off my car. When you're driving up to it it just looks like a patched piece of asphalt and it didn't even register until my front wheels jumped. There's no 18mph sign... 10 feet before is a 25mph sign... luckily I wasn't going anywhere near that. I called and they've not surprisingly been getting a lot of calls. Waiting to hear back later this afternoon about what they'll do about it...
My car is a totally stock PT Cruiser and the bumper was brand new as of 3 months ago so it had no prior damage or weakness.

All the article states is that the construction company intended to make them 6 inches and city officials wanted them to be 8. It doesn't state anywhere the official NJ construction guidelines and or codes.

my old LA neighborhood had ginormous speed mountains like this one, and let me tell you, people crawled down that street, if they bothered to drive down it at all.
it was awesome.

Do you have a source for the info, because I'm fairly certain that they were NOT built to code. The question also is to the code under who's authority?

Make a claim if the humps caused damage to your vehicle - It appears that City Hall are not to blame as contracts stipulated that humps are to be built to code.
It appears the contractor has public liability insurance for their mistake. Per newspaper article: By the way, anyone out there unfortunate enough to have a vehicle damaged while crossing a speed hump can call Persistent Construction, 201-941-9888 to register a claim.

This is such a stupid mistake, really Fulop?? The supposed "best mid sized city in the country" continues to make incompetent, dopey decisions like this? If Healy was still mayor I would just chalk it up to him being drunk, have you taken up drinking Steven? Candice is fairly quiet.

From User's article:
Quote: The spokesman said the humps or bumps were supposed to be only 6 inches high but city officials said that wouldn?t be effective enough to slow speeders and decided to go for something higher. Thus was born the axle shaking speed humps. Of course this will cost Jersey City taxpayers more money. Whoever these "city officials" are, they should be forced to pay for the extra taxpayer cost out of their own pocket. Sounds like they intentionally directed these be built in violation of the code, and now taxpayers have to pay to fix it, along with the damage to everyone's cars.

Has anyone actually measured the hump to see if its not to code ? We are all going to look and sound like an ass if they are ? As for seeking their repair, maintenance or code compliance, its best to direct the complaint to city hall or your ward councillor

So I started this post to create some kind of intelligent dialogue about the poorly constructed speed humps and the solutions that would follow.
The majority of the replies consist of. 1. Fuck the speeders 2. The humps are to big The only factual response was the when someone posted the guide to how high they are suppose to be. Im a parent in the hamilton park area and Im all for the speed humps. But lets be realistic here, its not built to code, and people are complaining about and experiencing damage. Just fix them and I think everyone will be happy. Well, not everyone, but most. -m

Personally, I'd like to see that block closed during school hours. Except perhaps to drop off kids. Like Bright Street.

As much as I am for slowing down our local contingent of speeders JCMan is right. If the speed mountains are not built to code the city opens itself all kinds of liability.

Some people may be too stupid to realize there are strict rules governing the construction of speed bumps and these break all the rules.
The bumps must be changed, or the city will go broke in all the lawsuits.

The more I read this, the more fantastic I think they are.
It will significantly slow down traffic through the neighborhoods and keep the passers through out. I managed to figure them out - so have plenty of other people... congrats - you have to pay attention to the road.

One was installed up in the heights and about 30 cars a day case their engines flyin over... All neighbors hangin out placin bets and doubling over with laughter as cars, busses, dump trucks, taxis barrell down the block....I've seen lots of oil slicks following these humps, huge gouges from front ends hittin the street, hubcaps along the curb(what car has hubcaps nowadays!) and general air catchin as cars are launched! Just goes to show you people gun it down streets with no regards to their surroundings, just their destination. At least they ain't rumble strips. Y'all be complaining about the pictures fallin off the wall every time da cars roll by.... But really, I've seen cars doin at least 50mph down this block for years...

I just went and looked at it, it is huge. It goes right into the cycle lane and right up to the curb. There is a car legally parked on it that looks like it might tip over.
I have some experience in roadworks, there should be a drawing that the crew work from, I'd like to see if they had one in this case and see if they either didn't build it to spec or if it was badly planned.
