can somebody please interpret that sign? 12am is midnight. so the street is closed from midnight Saturday to midnight Saturday, repeat on Sunday?

if they mean 12pm, why the hell can't they just say "noon"?

(judging by our Mayor's posts on social media, there is no proofreader at City Hall)

I was wondering if I was going to get any snide comments as I rode my bike through just above a snail's pace last night, sans bell. Luckily I escaped without a scolding or anyone trying to knock me to the ground with a "do-see-do hip check or clothesline."

I'm a Bike JC board member, and we haven't taken an official position on this yet, so this is just my personal opinion.

As I understand it, riding a bike is technically illegal within the pedestrian plaza (hence the name).

However, I suspect what will happen here is what tends to happen in NYC's makeshift/part-time pedestrian streets, e.g., Fulton Street in the Financial District:

When foot traffic is light or mostly just passing through, and there is lots of room in the street, a cyclist proceeding slowly, carefully and respectfully through will usually be tolerated pretty well by pedestrians and police. That?s what was happening during the evening rush last night, when I deliberately observed bike traffic for about half an hour. Nine out of 10 cyclists were just riding through the open spaces in the street, all keeping it mellow, and nobody seemed to mind. A few cyclists were also arriving at businesses within the plaza, and they generally rolled in a ways before dismounting. And actually, I didn?t see a single cyclist riding on the sidewalks(!), no doubt because suddenly none were afraid of being hit by cars.

But at peak times when (if) the street fills up with people just strolling, people sitting at outdoor tables, random piano players, etc., it will become annoying and dangerous to bike through, and most cyclists will get off and walk or will ride around the block. I know I will.

In other words, common sense will prevail.
Shocking, I know! But I?ve seen it happen. Personally I?d be satisfied with that outcome.

Agreed. And this is how I always navagate Grove plaza. It's not that complicated to tell when it's crowded or not.

It looked to me like it was adjusted to facilitate those going north on Barrow. The right-quick-left dogleg turn from Barrow to Newark to Erie is a lot less cumbersome than the left-sharp right-left turns they'd have to make to go Barrow-Newark-Bay-Erie.

I don't think so, because Barrow was switched to one-way southbound between Newark and Columbus, with a whole bunch of southbound arrows painted on the street for emphasis. The only cars turning left onto Erie were those coming in eastbound on Newark.

Huh. Okay well then that's just weird.

While I know this was said in at least partial jest, it seems pretty counterproductive to allow bicycles in the pedestrian plaza. I would expect and hope that signage goes up within a week.

Ideally, some temporary bike racks can be added to the mix.

I think the whole idea of a casino being built in JC is starting to catch on! Anyone else notice the group of about seven people playing craps out in front of Moe's Deli? Money being laid down in the street and all! lol

Bay Street was changed to the original configuration this morning. Is this permanent, or do they change the direction twice a day? It was really no big deal yesterday, but this morning the "DO NOT ENTER" signs were placed on the Newark Ave side, but the arrows painted on the street indicate otherwise. Seems very confusing.

This was great last night! I guess it's still new and will take a couple of days to settle in. Maybe there will be more street vendors out regularly and maybe more food trucks etc.

I was wondering about being served alcohol outside on the picnic (?) benches that are a little farther from the restaurant's outdoor seating.

And I agree with everyone, thank goodness we avoided the Carmageddon!!!!

Having a car in Jersey City is a luxury not a necessity.

The fact you can afford the insurance and car payments while living here and still bitch about parking and traffic is quite annoying.

You're complaining about closing a 100 yards of street with no cross streets.

I really enjoyed being able to admire the facades on the north side of Newark. I have two suggestions should the project go permanent:

a. find out if the facades of Rainbow, CH Martins and the third store (Payless??) are restorable

b. determine if it is feasible to have safe and quick assembly/disassembly playground equipment.

Ebbulient to read that the anticipated traffic jam in Harlem backed up to Jackson Heights via DTJC was avoided.

People were loving the plaza last night - almost like stone street downtown Manhattan.

Are restaurants able to serve food / drinks in the street ?

Was in the area from 5:30-8:30 and the traffic on Barrow/Erie/Grove was utterly nonexistent. Alternatively, there was a good amount of foot traffic the entire time and LITM, who seemed to be taking advantage most of the extra space, was packed outside. Not too shabby for a Tuesday night. Maybe our resident neighsayer will pick another issue to make a low budget YouTube video about which will have zero impact on anything.

It would also be nice if Verizon through a hotspot over there (I believe Comcast has one already). It could drive those outside to do their work and fill the concourse up further...

This sounds great! Is anything planned for the street closures? ie - food trucks, restaurant outdoor seating, Groove on Grove type music etc or is it just a street closure at the moment?

I would love to see all the restaurants bring out tables and create a great vibe like Stone Street in Manhattan.

Jersey City pedestrian plaza opens tomorrow, some periods of street closures

By Jonathan Lin | The Jersey Journal
on August 18, 2014 at 9:49 AM

Jersey City's first pedestrian plaza will open tomorrow and will involve the closures of sections of Newark Avenue and Erie Street, city officials announced Friday.

Beginning tomorrow, Newark Avenue from Grove to Barrow streets and Erie Street from Newark Avenue to Bay Street will be closed from 3 p.m. to midnight, Monday through Friday, officials said. On weekends, those streets will be closed all day, from midnight Friday to midnight Sunday.

"We are excited for the creation of the new pedestrian plaza at Newark Avenue as this will provide our residents more opportunities to enjoy the great restaurants and cafes in the area and take in music and culture, while contributing to a sense of community," Mayor Steve Fulop said in a statement.

Ward C Councilman Rich Boggiano said he voted to create the plaza but remains concerned it could make traffic in the city, which is already "horrendous," even worse.

"We're going to see how well it works, and if there are problems, it's not going to happen again," he said. "If I get struck in traffic there, then I'll be the first one screaming and complaining."

Closing the sections of Newark Avenue and Erie Street will allow restaurants to set up outdoor dining and to create additional performance spaces, officials said. The goal is to enhance the area's "thriving arts and cultural scene," officials said.

People may have cars, but that does not mean Jersey City and it's urban planners need to accommodate them. Many studies have shown that reducing the use of cars is necessary for the environmental health and viability of urban areas, and in fact auto use is declining in US largest cities.

Carving out pedestrian ways and bike paths is a good start; but JC needs to look to successful models in the US and Europe, and actively discourage the use of cars http://www.scientificamerican.com/art ... arking-cut-auto-emission/ The city should not be requiring park as part of development; if you insist on using a car in urban areas in 2014 finding places to park it, and navigating traffic, should be your problem and not JC city planners who should have their eye on a more viable, sustainable future.

No Offense, but no one uses the Bike lines in JC. They may say they do, but they don't. When I see someone on a bike I look to see. Sidewalks, opposite side of the streets. it is like there not even there.Same way on the other side of the street. Maybe the real bikers use them on the weekend. But the regular types do not, never !

The direction of Bay Street between Erie and Newark was changed so it's now 1-way going east, I am guessing this was done today to prepare for the closure of Newark Ave tomorrow. They put up new Do Not Enter signs at Erie St. I watched for about 5 minutes and saw several cars go through the wrong way, people were trying to get drivers to notice the new signs.

Be careful.

Just to be clear, it says on Saturdays and Sundays the closure will last from 12 a.m. to midnight. 12 a.m. is midnight. Will the closure be in effect 24 hours on Saturdays and Sundays (closes Friday afternoon, reopens Monday) or did they really mean 12 p.m. (noon) to midnight on Saturdays and Sundays?

?We are excited for the creation of the new pedestrian plaza at Newark Avenue as this will provide our residents more opportunities to enjoy the great restaurants and cafes in the area and take in music and culture, while contributing to a sense of community,? said Mayor Fulop. ?The City has worked with the businesses in the area on the street closures and we will continue to monitor the pilot program to measure the impacts and benefits, but we view this is a largely positive addition to the area.?

I had the same question! I just assumed they meant to say noon to midnight, and that whoever wrote the fb post didn't know that noon is 12 PM, not 12 AM. But, maybe they meant 24 hours?
