In this day and age, perhaps a Unikitty is what we need here. Rainbows and Unicorns are just so...so outdated.

We are digressing now. I learned in the 1960's not to litter. What do they teach nowadays?

A few years ago, people complained of overflowing trash cans on street corners. The City simply removed them. People can't be bothered to take their trash home. And the City can't be bothered to provide places to drop it.

Vigilante...I agree with you. For all the things that I like about living in JC , it's certainly not rainbows and unicorns around here. I don't know what the answer is for the kind of ingrained culture of lack of civility/noise/littering/crime that one sees around here, and, as you say, the lack of police presence. I can feel great and positive about where I live and then have my bubble pierced like it was yesterday, when I shared the light rail elevator with a guy who was walking back and forth screaming obscenities into his phone (and giving everyone else in the elevator the run down on his recent incarceration) as his poor three year old son stood by mutely. It's really sad.

Please, I AM that neighbor you want around. I do all those things and more. I even helped collar 9 criminals in my neighborhood. I reserve the right to bitch when cops let the laws drift into a third world mentality. I am also sick of the littering. It seems to be an allowed cultural mindset around here and things haven't changed. I applaud the new Mayor's efforts to "Stop the Drop" but that stuff starts at home and is Mommy's and/or Daddy's responsibility.

Amen, Moobycow. I live in the Heights and, yes, some of my noisy neighbors drive me bonkers and sometimes there is garbage on the streets, but there are also these kinds of things:
Amazing neighbors who got out of bed (on their own volition!) to wire my old iron fence to its posts when it fell over the other night, other neighbors who regularly shovel my walk during a snowstorm without being asked to,a wonderful farmer's market on Sundays where people hang out and listen to music, a fantastic neighborhood coffee shop, cheap avocados at the corner bodega, fireflies in my backyard, and a supportive community of friends. .I lived in Hoboken for years and my husband had to drag me up here kicking and screaming. I was sure at the time that I would really, really miss Hoboken. The truth is, I hardly ever go there. I'm very content where I am. But, of course, those who aren't should find a place where they feel happier! Bon chance!

I knew you were all back home when:
1. The bitching commenced 2. When the lush street parking disappeared - reminded of the good old days when every couple didn't need two cars. 3. When the people that complain about the loud music and noise commenced to have drunken conversations on my corner while Tiff, Muffy and Megan complained about Jersey City at 4:00am. Not sure if the old trash and ghetto kids were worse. 4. All the construction went back on schedule this morning as a constant reminder that even more of you are coming to bitch about this place.

Just curious, how does an individual in a situation like that afford to pay rent, buy food, keep the electricity on? Do you have to work from home somehow?

I'm serving a long-term house arrest sentence with the ankle monitoring device. I can go out for up to three hours per day. Four more years to go on the sentence.
Believe me - when I've satisfied my debt to society, the east coast will just be a bad dream.

Why do any of you live here? My weekend included neighborhood kids playing in a nice park, having a chat with a friend across our back decks. I also got to watch some world class fireworks on a beautiful night after spending the day in the Biergarten watching soccer with a lot of friends.
If the things listed below are what make you think of home you should probably move. Life is too short to live in a place you don't like.

As though the whole thing is binary:
"Jersey City sucks!" "Well so does NYC!! Even more!!" They are both toilets. It's a big, big world out there and the NYC metro region is a pimple on the ass of the mouse on the ass of the elephant. One of my favorite scenes from Sopranos is when they are in the car driving home from EWR after returning from a couple weeks in Italy. They ride home in a depressed silence as they cruise along on 1/9 through the garbage and post-industrial slag heap that is the greater Newark/Hudson region.

Seriously. In NYC it is so bad that when it rains a lot, the Gowanus Canal literally turns into a giant toilet. Complete with poop and used condoms. Oh, and 700 units are immediately adjacent. http://pardonmeforasking.blogspot.com ... in-turns-gowanus.html?m=1 I think that some people need to travel around our area a bit more...

Just returned from a week overseas.
Some things to add if I may: I knew i was home as I waded through all the filth on the street because of the lack of corner garbage cans. How about the gargantuan pot holes whose filling seems to have stopped? How about those kids who drive around with those muffler kits that make the cars sound like airplanes? Must?ve missed those. And not only the muffler kits, but all 4 windows tinted (only the back ones are legal in NJ). No possible way any of these cars could?ve passed inspection. Every see a police car pull one over for any of those offenses? God forbid. Sewer grates full of garbage? Check. Driving 50 mph in a 25 mph zone? Check Music so loud from outside cars that my house shakes? Check Welcome back.

After a long business trip away from Jersey City I knew that I was actually home this morning when I watched a car drive the wrong way on 8th Street from Jersey to Erie while a cop stood by on Erie and did nothing. Or maybe it was just all the trash in the sewer grates I saw yesterday?
