Re: New Tax Rate is Insane!

Its crazy to think that 20-30 years of amazing growth in downtown that the taxes were subsidized by the poorest neighborhoods of Jersey City, many of them paying higher taxes on properties worth a fraction of downtown properties for a very long time.

Even one year doesn't even come close to making up the gap of the free ride many (not all) downtown folks have enjoyed. But this is a double edged sword and hopefully will encourage Jersey City to follow the law and not delay tax revals for the outrageous amount of time it has.

I mostly worry for the life long residents. Some of them my friends that in no way would possibly be able to pay these increases and have to hope the programs available help them.

Does EZ Pass have any type of enforcement like the one Brewster mentioned that anyone knows of? Just curious if something like that has ever been implemented.

Just as others have mentioned, this board is full of of anti-rent control property owner's in downtown that resent the laws that have made turning a profit more difficult.

Don't let people on here scare you, you have received the proper advice. Huddle up with your neighbors and hire one lawyer to handle the tenant case for you. Prepare for a lot of discomfort. These new owners will do the following:
Try to get you removed for non-payment. Put the money in a separate account, if you receive a court notice cancel those previous rent checks and be ready the day of court to pay the entire amount of unpaid rent and bring keep copies of everything! Any communication, any documentation, cancelled checks, they want you to make any mistake. A single mistake can lead to eviction.

They will try to make your living situation hell. Non-repairs, some will actually try to make your living situation dangerous. With winter approaching be prepared for them to shut off heat to the building, maybe even conveniently you will lose power or hot water. You and all other tenants need to aggressively report these situation to the housing department. Contact your ward councilperson and get them let them what is happening. http://www.cityofjerseycity.com/citycouncil.aspx

Report the issues to everyone with ears and even reach out to local news media with documentation.

Despite popular belief on here, you are just leveraging existing law to enjoy a sustainable lifestyle. I hope everything works out for you. Good luck.

If they don't have the parking spots specifically zoned I would call parking authority and see what can be done about it.

You can also try reporting the issue to Jersey City Connect App (SeeClickFix)

That block is becoming a real winning location for good new food and old in the heights.

Sabroso, dulce de leche bakery, ginos pizza, la concha, are all solid establishments - I will check this place out. I also recommend noodle fan a couple blocks up by north street.

I constantly see the police blaring away to get cars away from there, and writing tickets to those that don't move. They turn the corner and three new cars roll up. At least they attempt to do something there.

Well the bottom line issue still hasn't been addressed. Why is this "community center" being allowed to continue operating when it is clearly in violation of zoning laws.

Yeah whenever anyone says oh the newcomers to jersey city don't have cars I just point in that direction 2 buildings has brought at least a hundred cars all parked illegal some blocking a two lane street. It's not fair to see it completely ignored. But I never want to hear about how they don't bring cars to new developments ever again.

This is a serious topic. Has anyone ever went to sign up for anything at the office at Caven Point?

I am not typically judgmental but as a life long resident of Jersey City the lack of shit giving actually scared me and I have been shot at.

Olala is actually really good - just long delivery times downtown and ordering over the phone can be a real pain. Worth the wait though the food is very good and the empanadas are worth waiting ten minute for.

It honestly scares me every single time I meet someone in downtown here more than 2+ years that has never actually been outside of downtown. Most don't even know where Grand St is or that Newark doesn't end when it goes up the hill. It honestly aggravates me that many will go on to buy property in the surrounding areas and claim they are "improving" the area without actually every knowing what it was like before it became "vanilla" enough for them to walk around with their heads in the asses.

Yes poverty exists in this city. Gun violence, crime, drugs - everywhere. But, this is not indicative of the entire population that lives outside of the downtown bubble. People all of over this city need help. Some good recommendations here to get started.

Traveling to New York City on the weekends is about to get complicated beginning this summer.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced today that weekend PATH service on the 33rd Street line will be suspended starting in early August and continuing into December. The months-long suspension is part of a federally-mandated safety initiative to install a new computerized signal system designed to improve passenger service and safety, the Port Authority said in a statement announcing the news.

Service on the 33rd Street line will be suspended from approximately 12:01 a.m. on Saturdays until 5 a.m. on Mondays. The suspension will continue most weekends into December, with the exception of major holidays, the Port Authority announced.

Regular weekend service will continue on the Newark-World Trade Center (WTC) line and between Journal Square and Hoboken. However, PATH can take some solace in the introduction of service between Hoboken and WTC on the weekend -- which is not normally available.

The Port Authority is advising PATH riders affected by the service suspension to travel to the WTC station, and then take New York City subway service to uptown destinations.

Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop and Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer could not be immediately reached for comment this afternoon.

Both Hudson County mayors were staunch opponents of a 2014 proposal to eliminate overnight PATH and even privatize the whole system. While the governors of New York and New Jersey supported the idea, the plan was officially squashed in January 2015 when the Port Authority tabled the proposal amid backlash from the public and elected officials like Fulop and Zimmer.

While service is suspended, shuttle buses that will make stops between the WTC and 29th Street along Sixth and Seventh avenues will be provided. The weekend closures will impact the Christopher, Ninth, 14th, 23rd and 33rd street stations.

PATH riders can expect similar suspensions next year as well, the Port Authority said, adding that a schedule has yet to be announced.
Port Authority to temporarily suspend weekend PATH service to 33rd Street

The 33rd Street PATH line upgrade is part of a multi-phased plan to improve the system and provide riders more frequent rush hour service. The Positive Train Control (PTC), an updated safety-enhanced system that the federal government has mandated be completed by the end of 2018, is at the center of the upcoming service interruption.

However, the bi-state agency said the improvements will provide PATH riders increased reliability in the future, as well as lay the groundwork for increased passenger capacity.

Further updates, bus maps and details will be provided as available through the Port Authority's website, www.panynj.gov/PATH.

I use Tmobile. Penetration seems to be an issue and sometimes you wont have service in buildings or lower level stores/apartments in Jersey City. I work in the city and it seems to be better when I'm there. Overall pretty reliable but has its issues. You wont get service underground like at path stations.
