Ignoring the ignorance of your equation of homosexuality with pedophilia? No, IBM wouldn?t have been held accountable, unless IBM was helping to harbor these predators as the Catholic Church has done. Additionally, you?d have a lot of people that would look at IBM as an utterly evil corporation and would never want the company?s stench anywhere near them. If IBM was known as a child rape factory, who would buy their services? Quote:
Yes, other religions and organizations do it too. It?s awful and disgusting. Those people should be held accountable as well. However, the Catholic Church has made it a point to protect these criminals and then to avoid paying penalties. They shuffle money out of churches so that when they are sued for raping and ruining the lives of children those victims receive nothing in the manner of assistance.

This is a flagrant sign of ignorance. Pedophelia has absolutely no association to homosexuality. Whether a large percentage of priests are gay is irrelevant to this issue. Nor is the sexual orientation of priest very relevant to a priest's inherent ability to minister to a congregation.

I love how Yvonne justifies rampant pedophilia by her particular religious sect by pointing fingers at other religions. Can't you just blame the excessive child molestation by your clergy on abatements? Or, just point the finger at other religions! I am sure that is what jesus would do!!! Haha...

What makes the religious organizations more despicable when dealing with pedophiles, is that they had full knowledge and complaints about their 'staff' and actively, deliberately covered-up, relocated or ignored the horrid illegal behavior. By doing nothing they were complicit with the crimes and made every attempt to keep it 'in house' and on occasion paid-off victims to keep quiet so there was no police intervention.
Other non religious organization that had pedophiles would report them to police to not just seek justice for the victim, but to protect the organisation and rid them of these individuals. There would be many more victims out there that the Catholic Church (yes and other religious organizations) would be aware of and know who were the assailants - They are only being reactive when a complaint arises.

When the sexual abuse story broke out in 2002, I read an article that quoted one of the private insurance firms for the Church. I am now sorry I didn't keep the article. The person who was Jewish by faith gave the stats on sexual abuse by religions and private organizations (Boy Scouts, etc) What I do remember from the article was a figure of 3% of Catholic clergy who were charged which is different from convictions. If I find it I will post it since it was written from the perspective of an insurance agent. The numbers would surprise the people here.

That's precisely why the RC church become the poster-child (no pun intended) for the problem. The failure to tackle the problem and it's cover-up has gone to the highest levels within the organization. And I think that's hard to digest and defend for devout Catholics like you and Mao. Whatever you might think, I'm not personally attacking you, nor any RC for beliefs. I think the RC church has done incredible good in the world, in areas such as charity, education and community welfare. St Lucy's shelter and JC schools like St Peters are a local testament to that. But I'd say that RC church leaders have spectacularly failed to stop the reputational damage to the church from decades of not tackling this issue - it's own actions and inaction undermine it's credibility and moral leadership. And that is sad to see. Generally I can respect the RC views on most moral issues, even if I disagree with them, and such public debate is healthy. On theological issues, I'd rather have a debate with a space monkey.

This is a naive / ignorant statement to associate pedophilia to homosexuality. Pedophila is a psychiatric disorder and homosexuality is genetic. The gay community are just as horrified with pedophiles as hetrosexuals. If anything, you'll find that pedophiles are more likely to be hetrosexual !

The Catholic receives a lot of press because it is the largest organized religion. Protestants and Jewish organizations are usually independent organizations so it doesn't receive the same scrutiny but the same problems exists. One link talks about Protestants sexual abuse and the other sexual abuse by Rabbis. However, most sexual abuse happens at the hands of the mother's boyfriend.

I agree with you here. If employees of Denny's molested children - and safely harbored the perpetuators by sending them to another Denny's - on anywhere near the scale of the RC Church, people would have already burned all the Denny's to the ground.

Wonder what St. Athanasius would have said about the skulls of the dead babies that died from RC church neglect in Ireland? More excuses and deflection for child abuse and neglect? http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/10/wor ... -burial-records.html?_r=0 Quote:
Might do. The RC church certainly doesn't. And has gone out of it's way to ignore, cover-up, and put even more children in harms way by putting known pedophiles back into positions of trust. I may not be as nuanced as Freud, but you are fooling no-one with your religious nonsense and psychobabble.

A bit more complicated than that, Pebble. Sexual assault by IBM executives would be asserted to be beyond the scope and not attributable to the entity in most cases. If it is a direct subordinate, then, under the NJ LAD, but not common law, there would be entity liability.
Most of this is all about the homosexualization of the Church in the midst of sort of mass apostasy. A good per centage of the hierarchy is gay or gay friendly. Google any of our local prelates and it will make your hair stand on end. But, no worries- as St. Athanasius said during the Arian controversy, the road to Hell is paved with the skulls of bishops. And It has nothing to do, DTJC with "the repressive policies of the church." The moral teaching of Christ, following and expanding the moral code revealed to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and their descendants, is the best protection against this. Celibacy, chastity, etc. absolutely prevent this. It is true that if these values are not properly understood, then unhealthy repression and even disassociation can occur. These are good insights of psychoanalysis. Freud would be much more nuanced than you. Also, regrettably, sexual assault of minors is rife throughout our society- particularly in public schools, sport teams, etc. One recalls the current case of John Mercado out of a progressive Charter School in Hoboken.

At what point will the Catholic Church actually pay for the crimes it has committed for harboring criminals and covering up their crimes?
Seriously, if this guy was a top manager at IBM and many other top managers at IBM were doing this, IBM would cease to exist by now.

The RC Church should recognize that it's own repressive teachings and policies on sexuality might be in part responsible for creating these monsters. Changing it's stance on issues like priest marrying, homosexuality and masturbation might go a long way to curbing this behavior. Also, the RC priesthood have the opportunity and resources to detect pedophiles in their midst, well before they are given any position of trust. Though given it's record on sexual repression, we're more likely to see voluntary castration as a prerequisite to the priesthood, than married priests and free adult porn in the seminary.
