Rackley is still very much around. You might have to go there. The neighborhood is just fine.

Thanks K-Lo. Appreciate you resurrecting this thread. I've not had good experience with Willar (very slow , does not keep committments and unprofessional). Will try your recommendations.

For the brass divider - I'd call Mark Hauptman at Alladin Lamp. He's really good with metals and does restoration work for NYC dealers. He's near McGinley Sq. He's a character and his store is not exactly neat, but his work and prices are very good. We've used him for a bunch of items over the years. 201 434 2869

Furniture I'd recommend Ray Haddad up in Union City 201 376 9877. About a 10-15 min drive up Palisade. He's got a workspace in one of those industrial buildings overlooking the Hudson.

Any recommendations for a furniture repair person? I have a dresser from the 1940s that needs some structure repair and possibly have it refinished too.

I am looking for a reasonable price and good work :)

Thank you!

Thanks to everyone for the furniture upholstery recommendations. I have a dining room table and chairs that I need to refinish - I need it to be stripped and a different finish put on. Anyone have any recommendations for that?

Has anyone used www.furniturehealer.com?

Thanks!

We have a leather sofa bed that is sinking because the bedframe is broken.

The bed is not functional, so I'm wondering if anyone would be able to remove the bed and covert it to a regular sofa?

Any ideas who could do this?

Thanks!

+1 for Willmar. They did a very small job for me, but were very nice, on time, and at a good price.

I had great luck with Jimmy Jammal on Newark near the courthouse. I gave his wife a very vague idea of the kinds of colors/fabrics I was thinking of on the phone, and she pulled some great options for me to look at when I came in. I had an armchair and chaise longue done and he gave me a break on the labor so I could afford a more expensive fabric for the chair. (His wife actually tried to steer me away from even looking at the expensive book b/c I'd told her my price range, so they were really very professional and generous about trying to keep me on budget.)

He did an excellent job - took both pieces down to the frames for repair and they're now very sturdy and look great - I get a ton of compliments on them. He has a very good eye for detail when it comes to things like making sure the pattern lines up.

They'll pick up and deliver and you can get a quote based on pictures of the piece and the fabric you select, so you don't have to bring the pieces in before you commit. His prices were in line with what I'd been told to expect and, based on the quality, very reasonable (although not cheap).

http://www.fabricwarehousedirect.com/

970-C New Brunswick Ave.

Rahway, NJ 07065

PH: 732-882-0007

Hours: 10am-6pm Mon-Sat,
12-5pm Sun

This place has their main warehouse in Rahway, NJ, about 5 minutes off of Exit 12 on the turnpike. They have thousands of rolls of different fabrics at great prices. The one thing they don't seem to have is a very helpful staff. Don't get me wrong, they are all courteous, they just didn't help me with picking out fabrics.

They also have padding, batting and all sorts of other materials

Not knowing anything about reupholstering, I found their website, drove down there and bought the 3 yards of material I liked and re-did 8 dining room chairs for a grand total of $12, my time and my driving expenses. And my wife was thrilled.

Mod Restoration in Brooklyn is great and their work is impeccable. Perhaps about 5% higher but the expertise and service isn't like anything I have seen anywhere else. I recommend checking it out.

I have gotten 4 pieces of furniture done at Hudson Design. His name is Robert and he is the nicest man in the world, and does terrific work! 3 of my friends have already taken things over. He's reasonable, has a pick-up service and very, very good. He's in the heights on Franklin street. Been there for years. The number is 201-659-4411. I just love him!!

Willar Furniture & Cover Co
on Jersey Avenue right off Montgomery

I've had 3 chairs and 2 bar stools covered.. the first time I provided the fabric.. the second time I purchased the fabric from Willlar.. was extremely pleased every time and the prices were reasonable.. only problem.. the gentleman who does the work doesn't speak much English.
