My neighbors last only a few minutes... much better than listening to racoons

Raptors were doing a good job a couple years ago... I much prefer to see them go in the circle of life...

I cant decide what is better - I am sure they help control the vermin population, but they also negatively impact native birds, squirrels, and chipmunks...

Does anyone else have an issue with them shitting in their yard? They basically use my outdoor space like a litter box... if I had a dollar for every time I stepped in feral cat poo I'd probably have 10 bucks... but once is more than enough.

Certainly no type of dog would dare interfere with a big ole feral tom and his booty call.

I've a brother in London that thinks the foxes there eat most of the small cats - either that or the cats have gotten smart and stay hidden till they grow big.

We get raccoons while the UK gets foxes instead. I think we got the short end of the stick.

Guess it was a good thing it wasn't a coyote dragging that kid off his tricycle. Most cats are poser badasses, coyotes are the real deal, no bowl of friskies waiting if the hunt goes poorly. I wonder if the coyotes do as well against a big ole feral tomcat.

+1 to the racoons, we are right on Monmouth between 7th & 8th and I have spotted racoons scampering through our parking lot before.

There are raccoon all over downtown. Walk around right at dawn and you'll see them all heading home for the day.

Most likely raccoons. They make the CRAZIEST noises when they're going at it. The ones who did so on my bedroom windowsill one rainy night were loud enough to wake me up.

Definitely mating noises. Most likely racoons, but don't be too quick to discount cats. I once witnessed two cats mating and it was quite an eye opener, and I have owned cats for a LONG time. It is downright violent!

The nocturnal biodiversity downtown amazes me. I've seen skunks, gophers, possums, grass snakes, hawks, feral cats, rats, mice and rabbits. Skunks in particular are a big problem - if you leave a window open it's pretty easy to tell when they pass by. Haven't seen raccoons yet, but wouldn't be surprised if they're prowling about at night. The huge rat I saw a week ago in the A&P parking lot makes me thankful for some of the predators.

From what you describe, it may be Raccoon's mating. Web search it...the sound is horrifying.

I just searched through most of this board in vain for a similar post & can't believe there isn't one yet. Has anyone else living around the block between Brunswick & Monmouth at 7th & 8th Streets heard the most insane animal sounds in the middle of the night and, more importantly, does anyone know what it is? Most recently, they just occurred around 3am Wednesday. This is about the 3rd time in a week or two.

It sounds like two animals fighting in a way I've never heard. There are quick, wild 'screams' interspersed throughout a constant, high pitched squeaking/squealing/suffering sound. This goes on for about 10 minutes, finally petering out to silence. Even still, that description doesn't do the real thing any justice. It's intense.

I've heard it suggested by a friend that it's cats fighting, having sex, or both. There's no way. In all of my years of having cats around, both domestic & stray, I've never heard anything even remotely similar. There's also never a single cat growl, screech, meow or otherwise.

I hear other neighbors rustling in their windows & yards during this. Tonight someone turned on the light in their yard very close to where the sound was (closer to Monmouth, about halfway through the block). Someone must know what the hell this is..
