I have made plenty of Complaints also. At times it seems to get better, then there are times of total disregard. I would love to start a 9000w generator every 30 minutes in front of the pilots house :)
Maybe the complaints are doing something, maybe doing nothing. But for sure, when the next helicopter goes down in the area and there are fatalities, how will they explain all the low flying complaints and all the no action to the complaints. Lots of liabilty.

You can also file a complaint for each incident of low flying heli at

http://www.planenoise.com/erhc/#

However, be warned that the website is owned by long time lobbyist for the NYC tour helicopter industry Robert Grotell(just google his name). He has a contract with the Port Authority to collect helicopter noise complaints. It is also a major conflict of interest as he is the fox guarding the hen house.

I know what you mean. I used to live by rt 139 on St Pauls Ave. They are not supposed to fly so low below 900 feet. They can't fly higher due to Newark Airport airplane traffic. There is something you can do which is to file a complaint for each offense.

City Hall and local politicians can't do much about it but it does not hurt to get them involved.

1.Email complaints to FAA: 9-AWA-NoiseOmbudsman@faa.gov
2. Email Complaints to NJ DOT who controls NJ Heliports. ronald.harbist@dot.state.nj.us
3.contact State senator Sandra Cunningham's office to pressure NJ DOT about these reckless heli pilots. Phone: (201) 451-5100

Being a Heights resident, I assumed it was a JCPD chopper, looking for fugitive! I should have gone outside - it would have been entertaining to see all the shady characters on Franklin Street ducking into doorways and alleys

That?s my thought as well, but I?m not an expert.

Thinking out loud... I wouldn?t be surprised if they released a tracer into the atmosphere and want to see where it goes... for that I could understand the need for a helicopter in order to take a slew of measurements over a large area, in a short amount of time. Or... they were looking for sources of radioactivity? Who knows.

Then again, it?s not like our anti-whatever forces are strapped for cash. ?Okay why not... let?s get the helicopter out and take some background measurements... we have to justify our budget somehow. Besides, I love flying that thing.?

Ah, so that's what that noise was. I heard it & expected to hear a crash, it was so close. My cat was not amused.

They COULD, but wouldn't be able to cover nearly as much ground as quickly.

They are most likely using the readings to set a baseline, so they can monitor for the Super Bowl.

It flew so low over my building that the wash shook the building and blew around snow and at one point it flew between two church steeples on 5th street and monmouth. I'm not sure those church steeples are 150 feet high.

That's too low to be flying around Jersey City and they could easily have driven around town to detect those radiation levels, just saying.

Now that we know they are looking at background radiation levels, do they know something we don't know?

It's a Huey, I think... Was flying very low (numerous times) earlier in the morning around me and then i saw it flying over dickinson around 1:30...

It's a blue and sliver chopper if anyone wants to look up.

They've made passes west of Liberty State Park; I wasn't alarmed because I read somewhere (can't remember where) that they'd be doing this. Even without the pre knowledge, I'd expect something like this leading up to the game.

They seem to be strafing the western edge of Downtown right now. About 4 passes so far and they are LOW and LOUD.

I just KNEW I should have picked up a copy of the the NY Daily News on Monday (extreme sarcasm added). But at least it's less scary than when Air Force 1 (as in the President's 747) did a low flyover DTJC a bunch of years ago with two fighter jets screaming along next to it just for a Photo-Op of flying past the Statue of Liberty. After working in WTC for 14 years and surviving 9/11, that was a major "oh sh*t" moment.

I follow the NYC Office of Emergency Management on Twitter, and they posted this a couple days ago:

I just saw it TWICE in 3 minutes--first going north to south and then it totally turned around and came back in the opposite direction south to north--parallel to Palisade--really low and loud

A contact on FB just posted: "Per my Fire Department contacts: FYI. Today a low flying helicopter from the Department of Energy will be over Bergen and Hudson County's taking base radiation readings."

Can't they bother to let us know about this?!?!?

Possibly security recon for Super Bowl? Doesn't hurt to call it in.

Its passed over my place twice. First time, it banked hard to the West. Its not a normal tourist helicopter. I only got a brief look, but it has two pods mounted on the sides. The look a bit like the multiple rocket launchers you see on military helicopters.

Note: I am not saying this thing is armed.. it just looks different than the normal helicopters transporting executives to Manhattan.

Call the N.J State Police they are better prepared to handle this type of situation. (201) 460-4100 You are wasting your time and everyone elses dealing with city officials.

I saw the helicopter too, around 1:00 Thursday. Its passing North to South over the Journal Square area, flying very low. It has two large silver lozenge shaped objects affixed to either side over the skids, I have never seen it before nor have I ever seen a helicopter fly so low. The fact that its flying in a pattern suggests to me that the pods are some sort of measuring or scanning equipment and its on some official business.

Call the Residents Response Center to report this nuisance, please. I did. It was flying super low around my area near SPU for awhile around 12:30. Flying so low that it was almost parallel with my 8th floor window and so close I could see the people in it. It was dark grey-ish. I couldn't make out any lettering as it flew out of my eyeline.

Very scary/jarring in sound. I don't know what is allowed to fly this low, if at all.
