I think the price at Shanghai Best is a bit too expensive. Everything should be taken down $2.

They were very light on the meat in the dishes we ordered. Maybe that's authentic, but if it is then they need to adjust the prices, because vegetables are cheaper than meat.

Last week, I ordered rice cake with shredded pork. It was more like rice cake garnished with some slivers of pork. Very disappointing.
What dishes do you recommend, now that it has been opened for a few months?

I LOVE THIS PLACE!
Their dumpling soup which is a regular dumpling with soup inside is genius! The food is cooked fresh. I'm so hooked I've been ordering dinner and lunch (on weekends)!!! Love their Scallion pancake with beef. I will order every food on the menu soon. LOL

Pebble , as far as I am concerned, soup dumplings cannot be frozen given that they have the broth inside. They are quite delicate. Please do not confuse soup dumplings with the other regular dumplings, whch have a thicker dough and can certainly be bought frozen.

Every time I've been to Shanghai, I've spent a good amount of time eating dumplings. So, I'll definitely give that a try here. For some reason a lot of places use frozen dumplings and it just doesn't come out right.

Already went twice to this restaurant last week! First time I went with a group of 4 Chinese female friends from work, who were a tough crowd to judge the restaurant. They took care of ordering different dishes to share at the table (loved to hear them all speak Mandarin with the wait staff, it certainly expedited the whole ordering process). We started with the two varieties of soup dumplings they have as part of the "dim sum" menu. The soup dumplings were fantastic, better than the ones served as Grand Sichuan. We also tried one of the rice cake dishes (with chicken), a noodle soup with scallions, a spicy dish with fried pork, and steamed bok choy. For dessert we ordered couple of different baked pastries, one of them filled with red bean paste which were delicious. We found everything to be very tasty, my friends said that most of the dishes we tried were pretty authentic shanghainese. Service was decent considering they had been opened for just few days and that it got really busy during lunch time. Something to note was that few of the dishes listed in the menu were not yet available last week, but could not find out which ones were those...
I took my husband for dinner on Friday and, of course, had to order the soup dumplings again (so addictive!); we then shared a vegetable noodle soup and the chicken dish with bamboo shoots... again, very pleased with all the dishes and the flavors, so we will certainly be going back. Also keep in mind that their "dim sum" menu divert quite a bit from the popular Cantonese dim sum that you find in Chinatown, etc. But it is still worth a try.

Way back in this thread, someone raised the topic of dimsum being served here. That is why I mentioned it Robin, but you are correct. Dimsum is traditionally Cantonese. If you visit it, you'll notice they have some small appetizer dishes including dumplings that could be considered "dimsum" ;)

Try the soup noodles. The soup noodles are quite good. Very fresh and not overly salty like japanese shio ramen. I grew up in Hong Kong and Tokyo and am fluent in mandarin. The service was friendly and prompt. I like to try a few more dishes before making a decision on this one. So far so great. The shanghainese menu is ok but not expansive.
Sadly, not a real dimsum restaurant.

I just ordered take-out. I asked for dry stir fry beef noodle in Cantonese, and the cashier replied in Mandarin. They gave me the beef pan fried flat rice noodle that is on the menu.
The dish has flat noodles, beef, bean spouts, and slivers of green and red bell pepper. The beef were cut big, not really bite size. They did fill the whole take-out container. But the dish lacks the 'breath of the wok'. I don't think I will order it again. I thought it tastes better at Satay Malaysian Cuisine, at 99 Washington St in Hoboken, and cheaper. All the diners are Chinese, speaking Mandarin.
This is not Cantonese food. It is a little pricey. The owner is the same person who owns all the Thai restaurants downtown.

Honestly, forget soup dumplings.. What you all should be asking for is full on real dim sum place. Dim sum carts with har gao, su mai, egg tarts.. perfect for real foodies. I'm tired of this Soup dumpling .. yadda yadda yadda.. you want the real stuff go to Richmond BC. For NY i have to travel all the way to Flushing or Brooklyn Chinatown to get a decent Cantonese style Dim Sum. :(

Getting back to the topic, I'm excited if Shanghai Best comes to fruition as it seems to also offer dimsum which I love and hate traveling into Chinatown for my dumpling fix.

I remember a time when all sushi places were Japanese owned: the sushi was bite sized, just the right size to fit in one's mouth - what's the deal with these large sizes nowadays?
the chef also placed wasabe in each and every piece - if you didn't like the green stuff, tough shit, don't eat sushi and, the servers wore traditional dress with wooden clogs and the pillow in the back I think Hatsuhana in NYC still does this Quote:
