My experience was entirely different. Submitted a proposal for a new fence to Dan with a design provided by Peter and got a permit. Most of the original cast iron designs are no longer made or are very expensive (roughly paraphrasing Dan), so my permit allows for a design similar to the old cast iron on my block. As far as doors go, I submitted a proposal prepared by Jeff Baker and got my permit. My door has glass where the original would probably have had wood, but the design was appropriate and more suitable for 21 Century living (I can see if it is FedEx or JWs ringing my doorbell).

Thanks, Sutherland. When we gutted and rehabbed this home, I tried to put in a non wooden door front and found myself in a historic review - aka "night out." Peter, from All Iron Works was snoozing in the row in front of me. He's been submitting designs for a home right on Hamilton Park for 5 years now - Dan's rejected every one of them. Meanwhile, the homeowner's fence is a rusted mess.
My experience with the historic committee is that they tend to work against homeowner's rather than with them. It's a shame because the fear factor prevents people from doing necessary upgrades.

Historic does get involved. If you know specifically what your fence and railing look(ed) like you're in good shape. Otherwise you have to guess and keep going back to the historic commission with designs until they approve one. It could be a very expensive nightmare.

Anyone have the fencing in front of their brownstone replaced here in downtown? Did Dan, the historian, get involved? Anyone use All Iron Works on Coles Street? Feedback appreciated.

Does anyone know what a new iron driveway gate should cost (gate/installation)? I am not sure what reasonable ballpark numbers are for iron work generally--I am thinking about 5 feet high. Thanks in advance.

Anyone know how to repair cast iron? Half of my cast-iron stoop railing post has fallen off, and I am not sure what can be done. I have the piece that fell off, broken into three pieces, I assume I can't weld it, what are my options?
Robin.

bumping this thread...
I plan on adding some heavy duty iron gates to my buildings (had another break-in). I noticed some of the guys recommended appear to no longer be in business.

I had Dennis (dukeofessex@verizon.net) from Essex Door and Window (http://essexdoorandwindow.com/) install a gate and window bars, would definitely recommend him!

Does anyone have a contact for Anthony And Son? Are they still around? I need my fire escape scraped & painted, and I wouldn't be surprised if it needs a bit of repair too. Any suggestions would be welcome, other than DIY that is. I'm a hands on guy, but I'm not taking that on!

Had Husdon Roll Up do our roll down gate. Worked for a month and then the motor kept stopping/shutting off. Called Caesar who told us he didn't warranty the motor only the gate itself - like WTH? Turns out we called the mfg. of the motor who informed us it was not even a new motor, probably an old one he had laying around. So we got screwed within a month. He's on Garfield Avenue in Greenville and I would not suggest giving him a call !

Anyone have any updated recos for iron work (front gate and fence)? We've used Willow in the past and liked them but their numbers don't seem to work (out of business?)

I just had my basement gate replaced on my brownstone and used Anthony and Sons. He handmade a custom door for me to my liking and the price was very good. He's a really nice guy as well. I highly recommend him. I know he's done a lot of work on my block.

I have had very good work done by
Hudson Roll-up Gates. Their place is up in the Heights. Ask for Cezar.

I know there have been earlier threads on good iron work but I searched with no results. Perhaps deleted? Anyway, any recommendations for good reliable iron work? My door and frame are on their last gasps.

Toomas:
We used Anthony & Son's three summers ago. We had them create a fence and gate that was a continuation of an existing fence, installed a back door and also had a perimeter installed around the tree beds. We were very happy with his work and price! The only negative was he worked on multiple jobs at the same time so he would start and stop and come back a few days later. Now, it was a better economy then and he may have been much busier... I would definitely give him a call. I will PM you my address if you want to check out his work.

Willow Ironworks
67 Pollock Avenue Jersey City, NJ 07305-1109 201-432-1156 This is the local firm I see recommended the most and they did a very nice job on a custom basement access door for me, although I didn't work directly with them as they were a sub on a much bigger project.

Anthony & Son. Used them awhile back and they were pros. 201 656 0857. From talking to other people who have used them, they seem to be the only iron works in the area who aren't crooks.
