I haven't heard anything concrete about a theater but that would also be an ideal spot especially with those anticipated Mack Cali behemoths being built in the parking lot behind it. In all honesty, I think you could have two (one on Newark Avenue and another in the Powerhouse). I am thinking smaller one on Newark Avenue in the vein of the Quad, Wellmont in Montclair, Count Basie in Red Bank or Roberts in Chatham and a larger Angelika/Landmark Sunshine one in the Powerhouse. There should also be a boutique hotel on Newark or in PAD

A cool movie theater like these would be awesome. Newark Ave. seems like a perfect spot for one. What are the plans for a theater in the Powerhouse?

You are completely correct, certainly you need that information (I was concerned about the rules of the forum in terms of "no advertising"). I see the event has not yet posted to the calendar either so I will provide as much info as I can here.
Samsara is a nontraditional documentary/travelogue that is non-narrative. It is sort of a visual meditation. Filmed in about 25 countries over the course of 5 yrs. using 70mm format. It is a breathtaking film. The title means "continuous flow," or "the repeating cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth" Ebert called it "A noble film" and gave it 4 stars. You can view the trailer for it from the site when tickets must be purchased (deadline is May 15 to reach the minimum headcount). Tickets are $12 each. If the minimum if not reached you will not be charged but otherwise the tickets are non-refundable. Movie Date/Time: Wed. May 22 @7:30PM Location: AMC Theater Newport 11 http://www.tugg.com/events/3712 Check it out!

Hey y'all - while you are waiting for someone to create an indie theater in JC, I am trying to drum up interest in viewing the Indie film Samsara at Newport for one night on Wed. May 22, 2013 @ 7:30pm.
It will only happen if I can get at least 67pp to purchase advance tix by May 15 I just posted it to the event calendar (not sure when it will show) this would be the FIRST step to showing AMC Newport that there is interest in booking Indie films there. I appreciate any support you folks can give getting the word out.

I am not sure why one couldn't work with the old Loews in Journal Square....to present indie pictures. It would be a win for all parties. Also because it's in JS....transport wise people from all over JC and beyond could easily arrive to it.

There are tons of spaces throughout JC that were once theaters but are now liquor stores or converted into churches. The one in the pic above is now a liquor store.

Indie theaters in Jersey City, with its diversity and demographics, would do well and be supported. Not everyone wants to socialize in Manhattan. Hoping White Eagle Hall comes to fruition fast and looking forward to whatever they have in the Powerhouse.

both of those theaters are pretty crappy in my opinion. The one near WFC is pretty decent.
Also the new one in Secaucus is decent, good stadium seating but relatively small theaters. Elizabeth has the nicest and largest theater, however, you'll have to deal with crying babies and roudy thugs.

In Manhattan try the Quad on 13th St. between 6th & 5th Avenues just around the corner from the 14st. PATH station. Tickets are $11 they have some really cool off beat foreign flicks.

Your best bet is to take the PATH over to WTC. There's a decent theatre over near World Financial.

I had hoped for 2 or 3 or 4 indie film screens at 50 Columbus - but that became "Club H Fitness".
In 3 or 4 years, we might be able to include a film venue in a part of the redevelopment of the Powerhouse. There will, eventually, be construction over the Light Rail Parking deck at Liberty State Park - mixed-use - great place for a film venue - parking and mass transit. Of course, Peter Mocco could incorporate such a use into a future building at Liberty Harbor.

Little Manhattan? Let's try baby steps. We should settle for becoming a Little Des Moines or Little Omaha first.

Na, the city is fine without another movie theatre...If you wanna show an indie film just rent out the stanley theatre in journal square.
Why do people keep trying to turn Jersey City into a little manhattan...

Maybe the choice and rotation of new films of the Angelica but the better seating/viewing and lack of public transportation noise of the Sunshine, audio quality of the iFC, and the inclusion of vintage film choices of Film Forum.

Hoboken411 has photos of the theater on 14th Street. Funny thing is that theater is well hidden; I totally didn't realize that it was that near completion, and I often hit up the Hoboken ShopRite.

2 MOVIE HOUSES ARE SET TO OPEN
Wednesday, October 14, 2009 By MARIAM AYAD JOURNAL STAFF WRITER Lights. Camera. Action! Two new movie theaters are opening in Secaucus and Hoboken. The Kerasotes ShowPlace 14 Theatre opens Friday in Secaucus at 650 Plaza Drive. A ribbon-cutting event involving several company and local officials is planned for 11 a.m. Advertisement But the best part comes after the opening ceremonies, when for the first week of operations - this Friday to Thursday, Oct. 22 - members of the public are invited to enjoy a movie, a small popcorn, and small fountain drink for free. Doors will open 11/2 hours before the first matinee during "Sneak Preview Week." Tickets are limited to auditorium capacity and will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis. The tickets cannot be purchased in advance, officials said. Then on Friday, Oct. 23, Hoboken's Clearview Cinemas opens on 14th Street between Adams and Grand streets. Tickets to see a movie are $11 for adults, $9 for seniors and $8 for children. To kick things off on Oct. 23, from 5 to 9 p.m., there will be live entertainment, an Oktoberfest beer garden, and a wine-tasting event on 14th Street near the theater, officials said. All proceeds on this day will go to the Hoboken Police Athletic League. On Saturday, Oct. 24, the two-story, five-screen theater will host an "Ultrasonic Super Fantastic Family Day" from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The day will feature an all-day festival with crafts, games and entertainment ranging from a petting zoo to bingo. For more information, visit www.clearviewcinemas.com.

The problem is that Newport theatre is far from an independent theatre. They show first run big bucks Hollywood movies.
