First place I'd try is Joe's Auto Electric. They do full service, not just electrical. Honest, no BS, local. Close to Coles on that alley that runs one way (west) between Jersey Ave and Coles, just 100 feet south of Newark Ave.

A M auto repair recently passed my litmus test for an honest garage - I took my car in because I thought I might need a belt replacement or new suspension, and they actually told me everything was in good working order and the only thing I needed was an oil change.

Harrington's in Bayonne also has passed this test, they once refused to charge me for multiple test drives and 2 days of garaging after they didn't find anything wrong with my car.

(I may in fact be a bit of a car hypochondriac but at least no one has taken advantage of that fact)

I've had good luck in the past at Summit. That reminds me, time for a tune-up/oil change!

You know, I typically would agree with your mom but I think that saying is more applicable to personal remarks than a business and in this case, I think we have a duty to look out for our friends & neighbors. I made the mistake of ignoring the dozens of negative yelp reviews and took my car their due to convenience. I wish i had listened to the reviewers.

Quick story: I brought my car in for an oil change and was told that I should have a belt changed to and that it would cost less than $50 for the belt change. I heard the belt squeaking so I was ok with it, and I had done the repair with a friend on his car and thought that the price i was quoted seemed a bit expensive but still reasonable overall. I went to pick up my car and saw a bill for slightly less than $450. The owner walked me through the bill and showed me prices for parts that were 3x the price for the most expensive parts I found online. 3 hours of labor to do a fix that took my friend and I 30 minutes to do on a more complicated car (his car required a special wrench that my car did not require). The owner tried to explain that they had to do some welding... at that point I told him I didnt care what they had to do (I mean seriously, 2.5 hours of welding to remove a belt?) that the price was ridiculous. We settled at a slightly lower but still ridiculous price. Never going back.

If you are looking for honest and fair...go to Louis' in Bayonne. My family has been dealing with him for the past 33 years.

I second this recommendation. I had a really bad experience at the Pep Boys by Newport where I was misquoted for services THREE TIMES to the tune of several hundred dollars price difference. Once I realized A M is actually closer to me than Pep Boys I took my car there and have gotten nothing but stellar, honest service. Them and the tire shop on 4th st are some of the best old school businesses left in JC.

+1.

I have used A M for all my servicing and major/minor repairs for almost 10 years. Last weekend for example, they did a weld repair on my car seat, oil/fluid change, tire rotation for just over a Benjamin. And I got the car back within 3 hours.

Yeah, Rich and the the (Korean) brothers Thomas and Steve are top-notch BMW specialists. They took care of my 2000 528iS as if it was their own, kept it running in Autobanh condition

Call Quattrohaus, they're in Newark near the PATH, they work exclusively on VW/Audis. I recommend them.

Well, my car (2005 VW Touareg V6) has developed a problem with the driveshaft bearing and I will need to either replace the entire transmission, or get the bearing swapped. I am looking for recommendations of a local mechanic willing to do the bearing fix (preferably) or to replace the transmission. Based on previous threads, I called Joe's first, but they don't do this kind of work.

Can someone recommend a local mechanic that works on transmissions of European cars? Conversely, if there is someone I should avoid, please chime in!

I need to get the brakes done on my '08 Mazda. I don't want to take it to the dealer, it's out of warranty, and I'd rather not go to sears. Can anyone recommend a mechanic they use?

I had a great experience with A M Auto Repair on 6th Street. My car failed inspection (emissions) because of the catalytic converter. I took it to Sears, Pep Boys, and Firestone. I was quoted between $1500-1800. I took it to A M and they did it for a little over $900. Passed inspection without a problem. I'm definitely going to use them instead of the chain auto shops.

America Collision
1405 Kennedy Blvd, North Bergen, NJ 07047
(201) 863-7741

I had a mishap in a cramped parking garage that left a nasty gash on the side passenger door. Went to get estimates from Sip Auto Body and was floored by how ridiculous the number was (~$3,000 and a 1 week turnaround)! A buddy referred me to Roger at this place and I figured that it couldn't hurt to get a second opinion. I literally paid less than 1/3 of Sip's outrageous quote for an excellent repair job in 2 days' time! I recommend America Collision very highly if you and your wallet want to be treated respectfully. No gimmicks or bullshit.

I choose A&L. I went to Ziggy's too and their estimate was close to A&L. I met Luciano and Antonio on Saturday, they looked at the scratches, gave me the estimate and said they could do it in 1 day. They scheduled me for Monday and put the estimate on their business card. I dropped it off at 8 AM, picked it up at 5 PM and the job was done. I would say on a scale of 10 being the best, I would give the job a 9. Satisfied. They did not increase the estimate (which was a fair price) when it came time to pay and they did the job in 1 day.

I rec. A&L because I've used them in the past. They were decent and beat other estimates I was given. Yes they are open on Saturdays. I didn't go through insurance and they had the best price.

I haven't used them but can share my experience:

Stopped by them a few months back for a quote to rectify an ugly scratch on the side that wasn't deep. Was shocked at the $650 quote.

Tried two more shops: Ziggy and then another one on Communipaw (?, close to Rt 440), both of which were rated high on yelp. They too quoted about $700.

Granted, mine is a slightly expensive car but I thought the quotes were too high and wasn't prepared to pay that much.

None changed their quotes when I told them that I was paying for this from my pocket and NOT going thru the insurance company.

(I got my work done in a small shop in Brooklyn, NY for $300. Fantastic work. )

I am disappointed that I was unable to give the business to the local guys and shocked at their high prices. Maybe your experience might be different. Good luck!

A & L Auto Body on the corner of Newark Ave & Fifth Street. Family owned business and has been there forever. Really great guys and have always given great prices. They beat most body shops in the area.
