Razza is very good, but small and pricy. I think Roman Nose is better, double the size and close to the same quality, but both are way better than any other downtown options (Rustique is OK).

Razza Pizza on Grove st/Montgomery is great
http://razzanj.com/ i guess its each person's taste, but check it out, great space and made to order and right out of the brick oven - locally sourced ingredients mostly, local greens

This not in downtown, but sounds interesting as a pizza variation. Faina sounds a lot like socca or farinata, the chickpea pancake you see sold on the street in Nice or Genoa. Anyone been here?

My favorite pizzas are from Bertucci's in Newport area, they use good quality ingredients and are more on the "healthier" side. The crust is always great and they offer very interesting flavors not found in many other pizza places.
If you are looking for very greasy pizza this may not be the place for you.

Yes, it's now called 13 MBAs from Mumbai. They sell pizza in the front and have 6 sets of bunkbeds in the back. The midget sleeps in the pizza oven. Actually, as of 1300 the same young guys as always were there. The chicken parm hero was $8.03 and very satisfying. On another pizza note - lots of work going on today at the multiplex pizza across from Grove Station. This will be a great place for outdoor tables so people can snack while they wait for their loved ones or someone they met on line to get out of the PATH.

I love pizza and eat a lot of it. As others have mentioned Rustique is great. The flavors are wonderful. But it isn't the greasy cheesy pizza I am sometimes looking for.
I completely agree about Helen's. The pizza is not very good. But the people seem nice. Two Boots is alright but it's so expensive. Carmines and Delinos taste about the same and are good. I have had some good and bad pies from Chill Out(now called Raffaelo's). When I lived next to Michael's Pizza/Video thing I enjoyed going there because the lady was super sweet and the pizza was tasty. Buon Appetito was nice. Nothing too amazing. This may not be a popular opinion but the best pizza I have had in Jersey City has been from Frank's Pizzeria on Monmouth between 3rd and 4th. Frank is usually always working and he is pretty rude sometimes. As I visited more often and he recognized me it hasn't been bad. But there have been many times when nobody picks up or the phone is just disconnected from not paying the bill. The place was recently cleaned up. I won't say remodeled, just cleaned up. And on top of all that he closes early, around 8PM. All that being said, I love that pizza. I've read some amazing reviews of pizza places in the Heights and I am excited to try them out sometime.

Hopefully the new owners of Buon Appetito will continue keep the same consistency as the original Bayonne owner started out to do. I don't think Papa John's should be included in this because they are a chain operation and the recipe and equipment differs from the usual type of pizza fare.

Buon Appetito is great! Great pasta. Great pizza. Great salad. Great soup. No complaints.
Papa John is another favorite.

I like Two Boots, the sauce is excellent. Rustique is very good when right out of the oven.

I like Two Boots too -- but they need to dump that vegan cheese whiz -- just sell it without cheese for vegans -- I ordered a vegan pizza and the guy at the counter asked me while I was picking it up if I was "really going to eat that?" He said no "one ever likes it!" Nice -- he waited until I owned it -- but he was right it was landfill!

They are not authentic, you may have to go up to the Heights. Try either Gino's, Pizza Masters, or Rizzo's all on Central Ave. and Italian owned. Gino's has the grandma slice that someone mentioned.

For what it's worth, Stella's was open during Sandy, didn't over charge, let people use the bathroom, filled water jugs and were just downright awesome. Not a huge fan of thier pizza but it does it's job. Not sure about Helen's, when I first moved here 10 years ago I ordered from them a lot, but I usually only eat pizza as a quick snack or a drunk snack. I honestly have no clue why the #OOPS# I am replying to this thread... Sorry lol

Does anybody know how Stella's and Helen's have stayed in business for so many years? Who orders from them? They are both so awful, it doesn't even taste like pizza. I had a slice from Stella's the other day for the first time in about 5 years and I couldn't believe how bad it was. Dry, and lacking any flavor.

I live in Downtown JC for about seven years now. When I left Manhattan, I left Pizza behind. No one sees to get it right! I complained to a friend and she sent me to Larry & Joe's on Newark just north of the HS. Their Pie was very good.
However, in Downtown itself, you have La Rustique and Buon Appetito who do a decent job. After that its down hill fast. Stella's the sauce is disgusting. Helen's is run of the mill. Does anyone remember Esperanto's ----NEXT! Two Boots is good but its not your typical pizzeria. Delenio - they like to burn their pie. Carmine's is OK and best of the lot is Paulus Hook Brick Oven Pizza. Razza is good but pricey and the winner is Grande Pizza. The staff is friendly and the pie any pie sucks. You'll know that the Pizzeria is a good one if you ask for a grandma slice. (a thin layer of dough is stretched into an oiled, square "Sicilian" pan, topped sparingly with shredded mozzarella, crushed uncooked canned tomatoes, chopped garlic and olive oil, and baked until the top bubbles and the bottom is crisp.) If you're handed a triangle slice, send it back! Happy hunting!

I think Razza is great! If you don't like that they charge for bread and butter, don't order it! It's just that simple. Pizza is fabulous though.

Buffalo Chicken pizza at Carmine's is the best. I moved out of Jersey City and still come back to Carmine's for this pizza.

Rustique is amazing!!!
John's is okay but, over priced. I've gotten burnt pizza from Paulus Hook Brick Oven on 2 separate occasions so I stopped trying them out. Helens has a friendly staff and owner but the pizza is doughy and the sauce is gross Haven't tried chill out lounge or Razza. LOVE everything about Roman nose!

My personal faves:
Abbondanza (Grand St) - surprised this place doesn't get more props VB3 (but not from the pizza parlor side, the restaurant side only) Roman Nose -- really good brick oven

Rustique is on Seamless. We don't get takeout if we have to pick up a phone.
I think there is probably more selection on seamless than Delivery.com

It's true. When we first looked at our menus, we laughed at the fact that they were charging $4 for bread and butter. And we didn't order it, but we got some (free) bread with our order of meatballs. It was seriously good. Not just the texture, but the flavor. Anyway, I wouldn't expect free bread and butter with a pizza order.

What everyone else said. Rustique is simply great pizza.
Anyone who visits us from out of town their first question is: When can we go to Rustique? Other places range from decent to bad. I do get it from Buon Appetito occasionally when I want something other than Rustique. I like Carmine's but not enough more than I like Appetito to pay the premium. I've been meaning to try Roman Nose, I've heard good things. Bottom line is there is so much pizza in JC that if you haven't found a slice you like it is because you aren't trying.

My friend from Brooklyn was in town over the weekend, and we ate at Rustique. He went on to say it was the best pizza he ever had.
In case not everyone knows, it is under new management... Pizza is still great, however I do miss the married couple going at it.

Carmines can be hit or miss(still good but not great) but when they get it right it is so good. I mainly order from them. Worst pizza is chill out pizza lounge
