I wanted to check the jitney extended hours this am... however ended up arriving at 3:30 am at the Port Authority bus terminal. All outside doors, both wings, north and south, were LOCKED. There were the usual cabbies trying to make a buck on the fare to Jersey that would swarm anyone who tried those doors.

I tried but could not figure out how to get to gate 51 from the outside but figured it was closed and not worth the effort trying to find out. I finally snuck into a Duane reade and asked the security guy there when the PABT opened up - he mentioned 5:30 am .. so I ended up taking the E train down to WTC and waiting it out to 5am for the PATH to resume..

I guess we don't have any options 3 am - 5 am :/

Took the 126 bus to Hoboken last night. Quite a bargain at $3.25. If only if continued to Hamilton Park more frequently.

Does the Jitney only go to JSQ? How does a Downtowner like me get DT from JSQ without PATH? Cab?

That's awesome!! Took the jitney today but missed the sign... if that's true then we just have one gap 3 am - 5 am left in the commute to JSQ. Granted the entire commute takes way longer than the PATH esp. for WTC commuters, but at least we have an option.

Does anyone know

i) How often the jitney to JSQ runs between 1 am and 3 am?

ii) Any transit options to JSQ 3am - 5am?

Thanks ;)

No, it cost me about 15 to go to the heights.... Since I am next to BL and Dwtn its a bit cheaper, to Jsq depending on traffic it can cost 10 or more not including tip.

This does seem high, I take cabs all the time from Grove back to Greenville and its like 9 bucks. I suggest you insist they turn on the meter.

I agree, it's about $7 for me from Grove to McGinley Sq. Take user1111's advice, but if they give you a hard time, call a local car service like King to pick you up. It's usually $9 or $10 from JSQ to Downtown and they'll tell you the price when you call.

I'm planning on taking the bus late night from Port Authority to JSQ this weekend and next. If I take a taxi between JSQ and Grove Street, how much can I expect to pay? A friend recently was charged $15, which sounds rather high to me. In my experience, half the taxi drivers in JC don't turn on their meters, and there's a little bit of room for haggling the fare before you get in - but it helps when you know what the metered fare usually is, so the driver doesn't rip you off.

GOOD LUCK!!! I tried to get the 12:25 #123 bus from the Porth Authority to Christ Church tonight - it filled up with about 1/2 of the people waiting to get on, and the d-bag of a driver telling us to wait an hour for the 1:15 (or 1:45am?).

PATH and NJ Transit are seriously mis-managed and corrupt. I learned I should simply plan to be home before dark, like I live in some 3rd world hell-hole. Which in most aspects, Jersey City Heights is.

They are running extra #126 buses to Hoboken - a fast ride, if you don't mind the 20 minute walk home to the Heights.

Good luck, everyone. I look forward to seeing you all in Brooklyn or Queens when we can all finally bail on this poor excuse for a city and get someplace that is actually connected to the real urban center of gravity in a meaningful way!!

OK confirmed. I took the PA Gate 51 jitney tonight at 11:44 that dropped me off at JSQ around 12:20 or so. I chatted up the driver who told me that the last jitney to JSQ from PA gate 51 was at 1 am.

I asked him what do I do after 1 am?? He mentioned that there's a "jitney to jitney" transfer upto 3 am ha! The trick apparently after 1 am is to take the first jitney to bergenline (jfk and 32nd?) and then switch to the second jitney that runs along jfk from 90th st to JSQ.

I'd be interested to hear from someome who has done this after 1 am... thanks

Can someone please confirm they took the jitney from Gate 51 to JSQ _after_ 1 am? Not sure what "limited" means in a prior post in this thread.

I know others are trying to get another jitney line going after 10 pm.

AFAIK, only the Bergenline/Union City and Weehawken jitneys from P.A. are 24 x7.

The NJT 126 runs upto 2 am to Hoboken from their schedule. The last NJT 125 I caught from PA was at 11:30 pm (confirmed with the driver). I don't know of any NJT transit options after midnight.

If anyone knows cab fares from Hoboken to JSQ/McGinley or Union City (32nd and JFK/bergenline) to JSQ/McGinley that would be helpful for planning tonight too

Thanks

I want to acknowledge how amazing you all are who have to travel during rush hours to get to work everyday. I had to go drive in to Hoboken, take the ferry, catch a cab, take the PATH, walk back to Hoboken due to my schedule today. It was all costly and I wouldn't wish having to creatively transit everyday on top of working in the city everyday. I sincerely hope this is fixed for you all soon - it's too much to think about on top of the holiday season, insurance crap with flooding etc., etc.

Actually, the jitneys run 24 hours. They are just limited after 1:30 am

I heard someone on the PATH say that the jitneys operating between JSQ and Gate 51 at PA run until 1:30 am. Is this true?

Probably licensing. If they are NJ based, they are unlikely to be licenses in NY, and vice versa.

I would think that the many jitneys that are licensed to run to PA would be underutilized by 10 pm, and available for this kind of service.

And let's not forget that before 9/11 daytime weekend service between JSQ & 33rd street didn't run thru Hoboken until 11PM - that service has NEVER been restored!

MTA had many more tunnels under water and a far bigger mess to clean up - why is this taking so long?

Sadly that earlier posted & informative article about the history of the Port Authority suggests that we're not going to see any satisfaction any time soon.

The Port Authority needs to be dissolved entirely. They are corrupt and mismanaging everything to the extent that it's hurting us all in the pocketbook more and more every day.

maybe the PATH should be taken from the Port Authority and given to the MTA. It's like the Port Authority feels no obligation to communicate to citizens/customers/passengers

This is a silver lining kind of thing and I fully look forward to the return of full PATH service.

But not having to go through Hoboken on the weekends into the city really does save some time.

Hoboken, Jersey City commuters protesting PATH's continuing 10 p.m. shutoff

By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal
on December 04, 2012 at 7:20 AM,
updated December 04, 2012 at 7:43 AM

Fed up with not being able to take the PATH into or out of New York after 10 p.m., some commuters have created an online protest to urge the Port Authority via Twitter, Facebook and Change.org to restore late-night service on the trains.

Clay Cane, 35, a Jersey City freelance journalist who helps run the Restore PATH NOW Twitter and Facebook pages, said commuters understand that the Port Authority is working to get the PATH system, deluged during Hurricane Sandy, up and running again.

Gate 51 in Port Authority has a fairly reliable jitney service that runs regularly. Last time I took it, there was a schedule posted, but I believe the last one leaves somewhere between 9-10pm.

Never mind! All the latest info is on this thread: http://jclist.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=25678

Argh! Wrong again. That was written after that PATH snafu last year when, yes, I wound up getting stuck in the city and having to share a cab to JC with a stranger. In any event, it seems the info about the buses is still useful in that thread.

So, does anyone know where to get a jitney that runs to Journal Square? Is it those ones that line up on 42nd Street or inside Port Authority? The week after the storm I took a jitney in to Manhattan and it let us off inside PA and I got it again to go back to JSQ from the same gate. But I don't know if that was just during the time when the PATH wasn't running at all.
