Re: How do I get from Manhattan to Jersey City after 10:00?

I wanted to check the jitney extended hours this am... however ended up arriving at 3:30 am at the Port Authority bus terminal. All outside doors, both wings, north and south, were LOCKED. There were the usual cabbies trying to make a buck on the fare to Jersey that would swarm anyone who tried those doors.

I tried but could not figure out how to get to gate 51 from the outside but figured it was closed and not worth the effort trying to find out. I finally snuck into a Duane reade and asked the security guy there when the PABT opened up - he mentioned 5:30 am .. so I ended up taking the E train down to WTC and waiting it out to 5am for the PATH to resume..

I guess we don't have any options 3 am - 5 am :/

That's awesome!! Took the jitney today but missed the sign... if that's true then we just have one gap 3 am - 5 am left in the commute to JSQ. Granted the entire commute takes way longer than the PATH esp. for WTC commuters, but at least we have an option.

Does anyone know

i) How often the jitney to JSQ runs between 1 am and 3 am?

ii) Any transit options to JSQ 3am - 5am?

Thanks ;)

OK confirmed. I took the PA Gate 51 jitney tonight at 11:44 that dropped me off at JSQ around 12:20 or so. I chatted up the driver who told me that the last jitney to JSQ from PA gate 51 was at 1 am.

I asked him what do I do after 1 am?? He mentioned that there's a "jitney to jitney" transfer upto 3 am ha! The trick apparently after 1 am is to take the first jitney to bergenline (jfk and 32nd?) and then switch to the second jitney that runs along jfk from 90th st to JSQ.

I'd be interested to hear from someome who has done this after 1 am... thanks

Can someone please confirm they took the jitney from Gate 51 to JSQ _after_ 1 am? Not sure what "limited" means in a prior post in this thread.

I know others are trying to get another jitney line going after 10 pm.

AFAIK, only the Bergenline/Union City and Weehawken jitneys from P.A. are 24 x7.

The NJT 126 runs upto 2 am to Hoboken from their schedule. The last NJT 125 I caught from PA was at 11:30 pm (confirmed with the driver). I don't know of any NJT transit options after midnight.

If anyone knows cab fares from Hoboken to JSQ/McGinley or Union City (32nd and JFK/bergenline) to JSQ/McGinley that would be helpful for planning tonight too

Thanks

HSBC shutdown their JSQ branch?!

Well I'm kinda miffed that they shut the JSQ branch down. I really don't like Bank of America or the other local options to JSQ and the Newport branch is darn inconvenient.... HSBC has free checking for one and good presence in NYC as well as upstate.

Found some news articles:

http://hoboken.patch.com/articles/hsbc-to-close-hoboken-branch

Looks like they have closed the Hoboken and Newark branches as well.

I was wondering if anyone else has petitioned them to re-open JSQ? The sign says to contact: HSBC Licensing Manager, Office of the Comptroller of Currency, Northeastern District Office, 340 Madison Ave, 5th floor, New York NY 10017.

I finally checked this place out last month. The food is great and reasonable prices. I got the chicken shwarma on pita for 6 bucks. They were not delivering yet but were supposed to soon.

I will probably use it for take-outs /delivery... as far as the decor goes, they could probably spend some more to make it a lil more upscale and dim down the lights ;) I do like the comfy seats and TV's though.

Has anyone tried the Luxor hookah lounge?

It opened up somewhere around Sept 2010 I'd say but I haven't had a chance to try it even though I live a couple of blocks away.

I'm not a big hookah fan but was curious if they served food and what it was like before venturing over. Couldn't find an online menu.

Thanks ;)

LOL @ Lotus car pic and Spice girls ;)

I discovered this restaurant via the online delivery site seamlessweb.com (for some reason it's not yet on delivery.com).

Agree that the food is different and delicious - I had the chilli noodles (hot :) and manchurian chicken.

The monthly price went up 20 bucks again as they finally did their "grand opening". Ugh.

Wonder how much the other lots in the vicinity charge..

I have been parking at the duncan/bergen lot (lot #1) for a while now but received a letter from the parking authority that their lease will be up on July 1 and they're recommending lot 28 on montgomery/orchard which is a lil far for me.

Does anyone know who is taking over the duncan/bergen lot #1? Will it continue to run as a parking lot?

Thanks

Thanks for the possible tips folks...

jcaro: it's the condos at 36 Duncan

Unfortunately the jerseycity.com site doesn't list the breakdowns by previous quarters, only the total sum.

I couldnt make out any tax abatement expiration info.

Time to call my management company and see if they have any further info.

Re: 18% TAX HIKE!!!! Mine doubled???

Folks,

I just received my tax bill from the city of jersey city for my condo. I'm a new condo owner in the JSQ area. One of my primary reasons for purchasing the condo was the low annual tax. I'd read of course that the property taxes were increasing but had accounted for at most a 40-50% jump.

Amazingly enough, the tax bill for this quarter is more than twice what it was for the last quarter (which the former owner paid) and I see an overall increase of 210% in taxes for the year. I checked the city website and it appears that all condo owners in this building have been hit with this sort of 180%-220% increase (except for some realty corp owned units).

Now there's also an "improvement value" that seems to be added to the land value. I know the condo assoc. did some improvements to the bldg. recently (new boiler, elevator, etc)

Is anyone else out there experiencing the same?? I'm trying to decipher why my tax bill is more than twice what I'd expected it to be.

Here's what I have:

county tax: 1.304%
county open space tax: 0.030%
district school tax: 1.334%
local school tax: 0.134%
municipal purpose tax: 2.373%

TOTAL: 5.175%

Can someone share what the numbers for the former quarters/years were (unfortunately I dont seem to have access to this information as a new owner). Could the older TOTAL tax rate have been as low as 2.46% ?

If not, then my suspicion is that I got hit with a triple whammy of the improvements cost as well as the tax increases for school and county :/

Sigh.
